Apple today released tvOS 17.2, the second major update to the tvOS 17 operating system that came out in September 2023. tvOS 17.2 comes more than a month after tvOS 17.1, an update that expanded the availability of the Enhanced Dialogue feature.

tvOS 17.2 can be downloaded using the Settings app on the ‌Apple TV‌. Go to System > Software Update to get the new software. ‌Apple TV‌ owners who have automatic software updates activated will be upgraded to tvOS 17.2 automatically.

With tvOS 17.2, Apple is introducing upgrades to the Apple TV app, which is the central content hub on the device. The app features a sidebar with content from Apple services and streaming services that integrate with the Watch Now tvOS feature.

Apple has included dedicated sections for Search, Watch Now, Apple TV+, Sports, the store for making purchases, and the library that houses purchased TV shows and movies. There are also sections for streaming services like ABC, CBS, Comedy Central, Hulu, ESPN, Discovery, Peacock, Prime Video, and more.

Clicking into each streaming service provides details on what's available on that service, and there is also an updated "My TV" section that replaces the prior "My Channels" section.

Apple has removed the ability to purchase TV shows and movies from the standalone iTunes TV Shows and iTunes Movies apps, and is directing customers to the Apple TV app to make purchases. The changes to the TV app are intended to streamline content purchasing and viewing.

I’m upgrading because I have this weird bug where after ads on YouTube, the screen is black for a second before showing the video. Hopefully it’s fixed with this update.

I am aware of the “fix” by forcing it to SDR 4K. But I got a HDR TV that can do 2000 nits, so I don’t feel that I should be using SDR.

I just checked the whole complete series thing, and I think Apple has done a great job improving the organization of just buying shows and movies. I went to a show like Friends and you can now buy the full series, it's just listed under "Box Set" underneath the episode listing. That was my worry when they were getting rid of the two main apps, but I appreciate the improvements they made.

I'm glad they finally added the ability to but a complete tv series but I think it would be best to have it in the same place as buying a season. A good example is Pretty Little Liars. The complete series is $15 today but each season is $30. One has to go to a different place to notice buying the complete series is cheaper than buying a single season.

And for anyone who cares, the Showtime Anytime app goes away on Wednesday. (A SHO subscription comes with my apartment building's internet bundle discount. Even though SHO is now bundled with Paramount+, you can't watch SHO without subscribing to Paramount, even if you already subscribe. Will have to use the Spectrum app, which really does suck, to view anything on that streamer.

That's not a bug. That is content range switching. Most content on Youtube isn't in HDR, so forcing your tv to HDR all the time is just going to ruin SDR content you watch. Most people recommend SDR with content range switching on. When done that way, you will get content in the intended dynamic range whether it is HDR, Dolby Vision, or SDR. Also, you should set your Chroma to 4:4:4 to get more consistent behavior with dynamic range switching.

As a Channels user the 'Channels & Apps' row looks nice enough, but its really annoying how I now have to scroll through EVERYTHING to find the ones I'm currently already subscribed to in the iOS version of the TV App. Apple really needs to highlight channels more with Apple TV+ and turn that tab into a general 'Channels' tab to see everything integrated with the TV App.

Can we delete the Movies and TV Show apps now? I couldn't in the RC which may be the same build as this one.

Was wondering about the same thing. I didn’t see that as an option unless I missed it.

Don’t really see the point of the iTunes app now on iOS or tvOS.

With the Movies app gone, now with a movie we bought we can no longer view details anymore before hitting play. Which is what you used to be able to do in the Movies app. Movie length, description, cast/crew, languages, audio/video formats, etc. Sure hope they rectify that.

Set to 4k SDR then match content. You’ll get your HDR when it’s there.
