That's absurd. No matter how much testing is done, there are always some issues that get through. Your proposal, to not release until perfect, is preposterous.

It's preposterous to you because you're successfully brainwashed into thinking that software deserves to be excused from all preexisting consumer protection laws and engineering sensibility.

Yes, you do have to stop fiddling and ship at some point. But that's not the problem with this industry.

The Bad: Looks like this update does nothing to address the horrible on screen keyboard, not being about to connect bluetooth keyboards, and not updating it to work with the iOS Remote App.

Decided that I'll take mine back this weekend if they don't "fix" the keyboard issue by then. Don't want to fall into the issue I did with my Apple Watch in waiting for fixes and improvements that never came and being outside of the return window.

I agree the new keyboard is a pain to use - but I don't think bluetooth keyboards or remote app are the way to go.

There is a touch-pad on the remote. C'mon people, the best entry-method is right there! Let people draw letters using their finger on the touchpad area as input. That would be the best! This text-input method is already used in some luxury cars and works very well.

I hope it fixes slowing down my internet connection. Very weird, once I turn ATV off, my connection to all my devices and Mac go back to normal speeds.
Do you have aerial wallpapers turned on? Maybe they are downloading in the background.

Isn't Apple basically doing now what others have been doing for a long time? I would rather get frequent updates than be stuck with bugs and have to wait months (or a year) for a major release. And it's impossible to release software that's bug free.

Or so people are encouraged to believe. Special pleading logical fallacy. If the product is so inherently unlikely to be error-free, maybe it doesn't deserve to be on the market being sold to people. Luckily for the industry, software avoids consumer protection law (that same special pleading issue).

This is the type of update that one wouldn't expect from a polished product. Why release new hardware and software if a stability and general improvement update was just around the corner. I don't like this general attitude of release it now, fix and improve it later.

Every product with software has bugs. I am glad they are actively working on fixes and improvements. Nothing is perfect.

Is there any plans to update ATV3 and add Apple Music because at the moment I am not planning to get ATV4 until they improve some of the problems.

You're not a developer, are you? There's no way they could catch all the bugs, even if they extended the Apple TV release another five years.

You seem like someone that has no idea how software development works. It will never be prefect, there will also be unexpected bugs. The development team is given a date to have a GM ready. The hardware needs software, so it can be produced and boxed. Once they get to a set point they will not make changes to GM candidate, unless it is a show stopper. Anotherteam starts working on X.0.1, before the hardware is even released to address minor, non-show stopper bugs.

The Good: only took a few minutes to update.

What you are describing are major changes that may not ever be implemented.

This made me laugh

While I appreciate the standard you are hoping for, that just isn't realistic at this point, and it may never be.

Be the change you want, and become that amazing developer that doesn't need to put out a product of this scale and complexity without the need for a bug fix release a week later. :)

Lol okay buddy. Consumer protection laws should apply and outlaw software being released before it's perfect in every possible scenario? I have heard some ridiculous things on this board. Have heard whining along with a faux sense of superiority used to attack anyone who doesn't agree that we should hammer the world with unreasonable expectations from life. Have seen the absolutely worst types of people float in here with a sense of entitlement so absurd it's borderline laughable that these people exist. Your post is right there at the top of of the heap with a full trifecta of nonsensical "gimme gimme gimme" garbage.

Netflix is not working after the update for me.

EDIT:
Waking now.

More likely, it's just the continuation of development that was going on before the product shipped. They simply chose a point at which to freeze the shipping version's development so they had a version to put on the device to sell it. There's most likely a developer bug database that has all the known issues in it, including everything they didn't fix by ship date of the device. Once it got into wide spread use, they then looked at how much increased priority needed to go to those already known problems they had in their bug tracker.
Minor releases, this being one of them, don't typically add functionality. Minor releases are for patching bugs. Major releases (9.0 --> 9.1) are for adding functionality which is not ready at product launch. Every software manufacturer does this.

I think the onscreen keyboard is a huge improvement. It is made to take advantage of the swipe-speed sensitive remote and works quite well, in my opinion.

Any idea if "tvOS" will come to the 3rd gen Apple TV? While I know most of the "new" stuff won't be available, it will be nice to get the updated UI and some of the other features like better Netflix support?

Or is Apple continuing the trend of fragmenting their product lineup with 16 different OS variations and crippling old products forcing you to need to upgrade?

No chance. Yes, they have created a new product with new features in order to make money for its executives and shareholders. Welcome to America.

Edit: Also, I don't believe releasing a new and improved Apple TV has crippled your device in any way. I am sure it still works the same as when you bought it.

Turning my TV and receiver on in the middle of the night, filling my bedroom with the glow of aerial video screensaver and waking up the entire household?
So light in Your bedroom wakes up the entire house?? why not the entire flat?

I suppose you could just wait until the bugs are fixed to your approval based on user reviews, and let the rest of us enjoy the product when it is released, bugs and all.

I mean, Apple isn't forcing you to buy the product when it's released. It is possible for you to wait. And some bugs are just not going to be found until the product is released in the wild and used by a huge amount of people.
