Of course he was surprised. Why would not he be? At the time when every computer manufacturer offers BluRay, obviously one should expect Apple to offer it too. Then of course we are not sure anymore if we should even consider Apple to be a computer manufacturer.

Maybe he thought he should not be surprised because 2 years ago Steve Jobs called blue-ray a "bag of hurt". He really hates the licensing schemes. He said he would wait until things have settled down on licensing (I do not believe they have) and the format gains in popularity. While the popularity is clearly there, Sony is still the owner, so the licensing is still surely bizarre.

I would much prefer they move the optical drive and add on optional second hard drive than put in blue-ray. I would much rather cary around an extra hd full of 720p movies than carry a bunch of disks around to get 1080p on a 15" screen that is not 1080p anyway :). (Of course I actually use my laptop because I need a portable computer).

If I wanted to use BlueRay for backup (And I have no idea why I would), I can easily keep a firewire blueray drive at home for that purpose. What is the actual reason to put the blue-ray drive in your laptop, other than everyone else is doing it. If you think that reason is good enough, your parents have failed you.

Nice way of putting it. Unfortunately the new 13" MBP has a major short coming.
Compared to my late 2008/Early 2009 MB 13" Aluminum Unibody in my sig, the differences are:
Pro - gets FW800, SD card slot, and Nvidia 320M.
uMB_Aluminum Classic: Dual sound ports!

For me I NEED to have the line it port because I'd like to learn Guitar this summer 2nd time around and have a LINE IN to record. not carry yet another hardware in my knapsack just to record & hear what I'm recording!
Also the 320M is great. The lack of FW800 means nothing to me as I have nothing that uses that port - only my Mac Mini and thus I need an iSight for.

To be honest, lack of using USB3.0 was a mistake by Apple engineers! Hopefully the refresh silent bump in Aug-Oct will have it along with the rumored FW3200 spec (which I think is already finalized).
My MB still has legs.

The BIGGEST shortcuming of the current MBP13" is the cpu.
its the SAME P8600 C2D that mine has. I also have 4GB RAM and a 320GB HDD.

that won't work, you can't just plug a guitar into a mbp. you need a little audio interface to match the impedances. try something like native instruments' guitar rig mobile, it's cheap and small.

Uh, you do it BEFORE anybody else does it, so you can ACCURATELY claim your computers are ahead of the curve and implement cutting-edge technology the moment it appears. And therefore, ARE worth the extra premium because they are the VERY BEST you can get for the money.

You DO NOT follow the market with your supposed "innovation"; you LEAD it. And not just by copying other iGadgets that are out there and hoping their slick look will mask their obvious ludicrous deficiencies. You also never impose your personal business wars on your consumers, unless you are insane.

And if you don't think those reasons are good enough, indeed, even ESSENTIAL, your parents and your particular educational system have failed YOU.

Multi-millions of people didn't know they needed DVD burners either until they got a Mac with them.

Once again, with Jobs, it's all about DRM and how easy it is to rip Blu-ray. Once that is easily achievable, he'll provide his pirate hordes with all the Blu-ray burners they can choke on.

The man wouldn't know ethics if they fell on his head and knocked him full height into the ground.

And he's even less familiar with true innovation.

Even if we had a Blu-Ray drive in our Mac's, is there even Blu-Ray software available? Because Blu-Ray drives ARE available to install in a Mac. But I haven't seen anything that can play them yet. It's like how the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive could be plugged into a Mac, and you could browse it, but you can't play it because nothing supported it. I figured VLC or Movist would have supported both, if not just Blu-Ray by now.

Doesn't matter for me though because I prefer to rip my movies into portable video files so if I had a Blu-Ray drive for my Mac, and you can get them cheap now, I would probably just rip it into an MKV then convert it into an MPEG-4 for myself and not use the disc much anymore.

Heck, that's the only thing I use my DVD drive for anymore as well. (Aside from the occasional OS X install) I wouldn't blink once if Apple went the Air route with the normal MBP's and removed the drives opting for a lighter computer and optional external drive (Which already exists). Hell, if the Air wasn't so gimped and overpriced and apparently on the way out, I'd have gone for that a while ago. I kinda wish they WOULD go the optical drive-less route. I only use the drive occasionally. So I'd be all for removing the drive if it meant the computer was lighter and the drive could be purchased separately. (As I mentioned, though it wouldn't be gimped to only work on the air anymore.) Heck, if I were so inclined, I'd open my new Pro, take out the Superdrive and replace it with one or two more HD's instead then just get an external drive. I'd rather have more drive space than an occasionally used optical drive. I actually think this is the way Apple might move eventually. Especially if they phase the Air out. They'd probably absorb the Air's features (Like they always do, starting with high-tech features in higher models and trickling them down into lower ones over time) into the Pro's by making them lighter and removing the Optical drive opting for external or wireless DVD insertion. But that's probably just my opinion. Hell, I don't even use FireWire anymore and don't care that it was once removed.

Remember, the Mac mini is just the rebirth of the G4 Cube. :apple:

Ya know, you would think that they would have had some of these ready. Has anyone had their's shipped???????

I ordered mine yesterday, with the same specs as you did! The guy in the shop told me it would be around 7 days untill I could pick it up. So I said it probably would be 2 weeks.. en he said yes!.. I live in the Netherlands.. maby you're more lucky!

But hey.. there coming!!

i ordered mine at Apr 14, 2010 at 11:09 AM PDT and it just changed to "Prepared for Shipment"...

i ordered a 17" MBP 2.66 Core i7 8gb ram and a 500gb @7200!

I ordered mine (13" basic configuration but with english keyboard) from germany April 15th and has been shipped today from China?! ignorance is bliss :D , but, is it true that every time you order online, it comes from china?

related question: any chance it will get delayed becasue of Europe shutting down air space? not sure the airports are closed only for civil flights ...

just curious how the shipment travels :)

I ordered my 15" i7 on 4/13 with expidited delivery. It arrived at FedEx Shanghai on 4/16 and is It's currently "out for delivery" in the Wash Dc area. If I don't get it today (at work) I'll have it tomorrow- can't wait.

This is definitely the case with BTO systems as they ship from manufacturing. I'm unsure about stock configurations, but would see no reason Apple would want to maintain their own warehouse of inventory.

I ordered my 15" Macbook Pro i7 the night of launch day and it has left Shanghai CN and will be delivered on Thursday. I did order mine with the high res glossy and I wonder how many people went that route?

15" Macbook Pro - i7
500GB 7200 hard drive
4 GB ram
512mb Nvidia graphics chip
High res glossy screen

I ordered the same config but at the last minute decided to stick with the 5400rpm. Ordered Tues nite, left China, should arrive Thurs. Only problem is my girlfriend is leaving for Switzerland for 5 months so she conned me into giving it to her and I'm gonna order a new one next CC billing cycle (end of month). Oh well. Hope you enjoy your i7!!! Please post your impressions of the Hi Res if you get a chance!

anyone with 15" core i7 having problems with intermittent freezes and slow downs? when launching safari, for instance, it sometimes takes about 30 seconds of beachball spinning before i get any use of the system.

this has been happening to me since day one.

So, apple management is conformed by incompetents that can't bring better products from the production line? That's what you mean?

Apple is hampered by a Peter Principle CEO that thinks he's Willie Wonka and wishes he worked at Mattel.

So he turned Apple into Mattel. It worked for awhile because more iKiddies need iCrap than real computers. But that's a temporary, albeit highly addictive fix.

And the problem goes from the top all the way down.

Crikey! What kind of wimpy softball pitch was that?
Feed trolls much?

Did the 17" already boast a 1920x1080 LCD ? Cause that's full-HD on the go, folks.

Nice to se a new, cris 1680x1050 on the 15" too.

But what about the MBAir ? Kinda out of the race, isn't it ?

I haven't taken the time to read all 52+ pages of posts in this thread due to my own laziness, and if this has been addressed already, I apologize, but here it goes:

To my knowledge the MBP 17" only had a max of 1680 x 1050 until this update, unless you went with the CTO 1920 x 1200 hi res option.

Here's a image to back up my post:

best time to place your online order?

From seeing all these posts on delivery times, I'm just about to place my order online tomorrow. But I'm curious if there's a "best time" to order? I know orders don't ship over the weekends, and i know orders take sometime to process before it ships. So would you think ordering tomorrow would be good? or should i wait until Monday so therefore the process doesn't have any waiting periods (the weekend)?

also i was planning on getting the 2-3 day shipping (sucks that the 1 day shipping isn't offered for upgraded models) does anyone think 2-3 day shipping is worth it? i hear standard shipping = 5-6 days.

You last visited: Nov 11, 2007.... lulz

So does anyone actually know why they didn't implement 4 physical cores :( I have been waiting since September 2006 for this.... sad
