Of course he was surprised. Why would not he be? At the time when every computer manufacturer offers BluRay, obviously one should expect Apple to offer it too. Then of course we are not sure anymore if we should even consider Apple to be a computer manufacturer.
Maybe he thought he should not be surprised because 2 years ago Steve Jobs called blue-ray a "bag of hurt". He really hates the licensing schemes. He said he would wait until things have settled down on licensing (I do not believe they have) and the format gains in popularity. While the popularity is clearly there, Sony is still the owner, so the licensing is still surely bizarre.
I would much prefer they move the optical drive and add on optional second hard drive than put in blue-ray. I would much rather cary around an extra hd full of 720p movies than carry a bunch of disks around to get 1080p on a 15" screen that is not 1080p anyway
If I wanted to use BlueRay for backup (And I have no idea why I would), I can easily keep a firewire blueray drive at home for that purpose. What is the actual reason to put the blue-ray drive in your laptop, other than everyone else is doing it. If you think that reason is good enough, your parents have failed you.
