Mine says it needs 2.2GB to install, yet my AW3 only has 928MB free. 2.2GB seems like a lot.

I went into usage on the watch app, and the largest app is only using 75MB. Nothing is very large in the list. No way I can free up 2.2GB, let alone that in and of itself would fill up the AW.

It says 3.8GB in use. No way that all the apps listed in usage equal even 300MB.

What do I do?

The gps S3’s have only 8gb of storage, half of that is used up by the OS. If you have music and/or photos stored on the watch, try deleting some of those. Otherwise, I hate to say it, but you may need to wipe the watch and start over with a fresh install.
Edit: try a reboot before a reinstall.

My series 3 is saying the same thing. My largest app by some margin (Mail) only takes up 100mb with no photos, music or podcasts that can be easily thrown away. I’d have to delete a lot of apps to install this. Never had this issue before. Did you manage to solve it?

Same issue with my AppleWatch Series3. A reboot of the watch fixed the issue for me.
Yes, was just about to post that I was able to update after rebooting the Watch. Available storage went from 500mb to 2.5gb just doing that. Go figure.

I tried the reboot, and checked usage after reboot. Not much change. About 1.0GB available but I tried the update and it was successful (after a long time). Post-update, I checked usage and it shows 2.9GB available and only 1.9GB used.

I wish we had access to more details on memory usage. I'm guessing with used space reduced 50% that something like old update files were purged. There's no way almost 2GB of actual data would have been deleted (I hope!).

What justification is there for limiting Carkey support to Series 5 and not at least including Series 4?

I've seen reports of series 4 and 5 watches having the same CPU, but the SOC as a whole did get renumbered from S4 to S5 between the models so while the CPU bit of the SOC might be unchanged there could well be vital differences in the NFC hardware components?

Or as others have said, it is hardly unheard of for Apple to make features exclusive to current models when older models are more than capable of running them.

A lot of folks assert that Apple does this to force upgrades. I suspect it’s more like, they think it works perfectly on the new hardware (which is slightly different), and they’re uninterested in putting in extra time to make it work (what they consider) not quite as well on older hardware, so it becomes a feature on/for the new model only.

I have the S3 iapple iWatch

you need to remove all apps including Apple apps that are removable (walkie talkie, stop watch, etc) ... This is done by long holding on the app icons ... deleteable appa will have a small X in the upper left corner of the icon ...

also, remove all music, podcast, etc

sucks but it has to be done

I have noticed in this update the Apple News watch app now prefetches news articles in the background.

So when you open the app on your watch you don’t have to wait for the painfully slow refresh of the news. And while you wait you would be stuck looking at outdated news articles, whose age depended on when the last time you opened the app was. And of course, they don’t put any date stamps on the articles, do you have no idea when they are from...so at least now in theory, if you have a data connection it will be relatively current news articles.
