Beats me. 8.6 still, nothing is showing up.
🤷🏻‍♂️

Strange.
Saw the 8.7 update earlier on the series 6 during dinner time, and wanted to wait until bed time to do it.
Now it shows the update available for like a second and then shows 8.6 is the latest. What is going wrong? 🤣

Edit:
Okay, now the watch is on the charger for a couple of minutes, the update shows up normally on the phone.
Watch had more than 60% battery to begin with, so this is still strange.

Odd. Now I just have an endless "Checking for update" screen.

Updated earlier this afternoon. I hope the Hand Washing notification is now fixed up. It was pretty glitchy and random.

I don’t need a watch to tell me to use reasonable hygiene- and contact COVID was debunked quite a while ago.

So how about a 80+% battery check

I have a few different smart watches. The AW is the only one that has to be connected to its charger.

True but I can update my other devices off the charger if they have greater than 50% battery. My watch was at about 90% today when the update came out. Charger anyway.

They already have the requirement for it to be at greater than 50%, in addition to being on the charger. Only possible reason to require both is if there’s a watch model out there for which processing the update would eat up a large percentage of battery despite being on the charger.

I assume there’s a good reason for it but it seems a little overly cautious.

All of you have reasonable points. I can only assume this is the requirement because they are taking a “belt and suspenders” approach, because the consequences of a power problem while updating are so unfixable.

My Apple Watch Series 5 is suffering major battery drain after the 8.7 update yesterday evening.

It dropped from 100% to 35% overnight (normally it's at 78% in the morning). I restarted it and put it on charge.

I have no non-Apple apps installed on it. Wearing it again now while working and it's down to 95% in 1h30 of doing nothing - and it's in Cinema mode so the screen isn't even on. Normally I'd get 3 hours before it would drop from 100%.

Anyone else noticing significant battery drain after the update?

Hoping it'll settle down after a full day and normal charge cycle.

I had the same problem after re-pairing Watch and iCloud+ Relay was the issue. Disable, unlock with Watch, enable, and works fine. But it was on the previous system. On Ventura is fine since public beta.

Apple today released watchOS 8.7, the sixth major update to the watchOS 8 operating system that launched in September 2021. watchOS 8.6 comes around two months after the launch of watchOS 8.6, an update that expanded ECG functionality to Mexico.

watchOS ‌8.7 can be downloaded for free through the dedicated Apple Watch app on the iPhone by going to General > Software Update.

To install the new software, the Apple Watch needs to have at least 50 percent battery, it needs to be placed on a charger, and it needs to be in range of the ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌iPhone‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌.

According to Apple's release notes, there are no new prominent features in watchOS 8.7. Instead, the software focuses on under-the-hood "improvements," along with bug fixes and important security updates.

STILL NEEDS WIFI TO DOWNLOAD? this is very inconvenient, what age are we living in? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Wish Apple would do away with having to utilize the charger to update.
The bigger issue is why does it have to be on the charger AND be 50%+ If it's on the charger, the charge is increasing. I can see it shouldn't be critically low, but 50% is too high.

Like others I wasn't able to download the update yesterday. This morning it was available, but now I get an error when trying to install it to my watch: "Software Update Failed - An error occured downloading the latest version of WatchOS on your Apple Watch." Anyone else?

Edit: I rebooted the watch and now it's installing. :)

OMG. This update is terrible! Now my stand reminders are not working and asking Siri on the watch what the dew point is now results in web search results instead of the actual number prior versions gave.

Also want to add when I asked Siri what the dew point temperature was on the watch with this new update, it replied “I can only answer one weather fact at a time.”🤣👎
