I'm still contently on iOS 16.3 with my 14PM.
iOS 17.3 might be the version I finally take the plunge and update.
So long to battery life

"instantly put an end" don't be too hyped, stealers will find a new way... However, STP will help mitigate this problem significantly..., if people adopt it

Some people will not enable STP even with iOS 17.3, and God help those people who refuse to upgrade, they will be the main targets
oh sure thats true.
But anyone who has a phone capable of 17.3 who hasnt updated their software and/or decides not to switch it on then more fool them.

Hopefully the thieves will soon get wind of the fact that some (hopefully most) phones will not be worth stealing in this way.

We should always hope for the best when it comes to these topics

There is zero reason that a firmware update is needed to enable collaborative playlists. Spotify doesn't need to update the OS to enable new features, and neither does Apple.

I do like the Stolen Device Protection and will enable it. I hope I can disable changing it at work, as my work (hospital) covers four city blocks.

I need a "new" keep-it-cool feature since the current version of iOS causes my SE to heat up like crazy.

There's absolutely no reason Stolen Device Protection can't also be provided to iOS 16 users, other than forced upgrading. This simple double lock feature should have been thought of and available for years.

In its press release unveiling a new Black Unity Sport Band for the Apple Watch, Apple confirmed that iOS 17.3 will be released next week. The software update includes three new features and additions for the iPhone, with more details outlined below.

Apple's confirmation that iOS 17.3 will be released next week:New features in iOS 17.3 include Stolen Device Protection, collaborative Apple Music playlists, and a Unity Bloom wallpaper for the Lock Screen.

Stolen Device Protection

ios-stolen-device-protection.jpg

Earlier this year, The Wall Street Journal reported about thieves spying on an iPhone user's passcode before stealing the device, often in public places like bars. With knowledge of the passcode, the thief can then change the victim's Apple ID password, turn off Find My, and more to gain full control of the device. The thief can also use the passcode to gain access to passwords stored in iCloud Keychain and other sensitive information.

Stolen Device Protection is Apple's hopeful solution to the problem. Apple says the feature is designed to add an additional layer of security in the event someone has stolen your iPhone and also obtained the device's passcode.

When the feature is turned on, Face ID or Touch ID authentication is strictly required for the following actions, with a passcode fallback no longer available:
  • Accessing passwords or passkeys saved in iCloud Keychain
  • Applying for a new Apple Card or viewing an Apple Card's virtual number
  • Turning off Lost Mode
  • Erasing all content and settings
  • Taking certain Apple Cash and Apple Card Savings actions in the Wallet app
  • Using payment methods saved in Safari
  • Using your iPhone to set up a new device
For especially sensitive actions, including changing the password of the Apple ID account associated with the iPhone, the feature adds a one-hour security delay on top of biometric authentication. In these cases, the user must authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID, wait one hour, and authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID again. However, Apple says there is no delay when the iPhone is in familiar locations, such as at home or work.

Actions that require Face ID or Touch ID authentication, and have a one-hour security delay, when the feature is turned on:
  • Changing your Apple ID password
  • Updating select Apple ID security settings, including adding or removing a trusted device, trusted phone number, Recovery Key, or Recovery Contact
  • Changing your iPhone passcode
  • Adding or removing Face ID or Touch ID
  • Turning off Find My
  • Turning off Stolen Device Protection
Stolen Device Protection is an opt-in feature that can be found in the Settings app under Face ID & Passcode, and it is available for all iPhones that are compatible with iOS 17.3.

Apple Music Collaborative Playlists

A new Collaborative Playlists option for Apple Music subscribers allows multiple people to add, reorder, and remove songs in a shared playlist. Users are able to leave animated emoji reactions next to songs in the playlist.

This feature was initially expected to launch with iOS 17.2, but it was removed from that update towards the end of the beta testing period. The feature was re-added in iOS 17.3, and Apple's website confirmed that it would return in 2024.

Unity Bloom Wallpaper

iOS 17.3 and iPadOS 17.3 include Apple's new Unity Bloom wallpaper for the iPhone and iPad, in support of the Black community. The wallpaper includes an outline of flowers that fill with color when the display is active.

Apple says the "blooming flowers and vibrant colors represent Pan-Africanism and symbolize generations working together to address injustice and dismantle systemic barriers." There is also a new Black Unity Sport Band for the Apple Watch, and an accompanying Black Unity watch face available with watchOS 10.3, which will also be released next week.

The wallpaper looks like a six-year-old drew it! Lame!! I really don’t want 17.3. I actually don’t want any more updates on this freaking phone I’m getting sick of you having updates every five minutes it’s like your phones you have a new phone every three months you make me sick soon I will be with android.

I hope that they will fix the bug which causes my iPhone 12 to lag while opening camera app. Sometimes it freezes for 3 seconds, there is also problem with taking photos. Already did clean install but problem persist. Anyone else having the same situation?

Any additional security measure such as SDP is always welcome, but I also question the security measures people use on their phones to where this becomes a necessity.

The issues of opportunist thieves eavesdropping on your passcode can be mitigated greatly by using a password instead. Sure, it’s more of a pain to type a password than, say, a four digit number (giving worst case as an example), but it’s not as if you have to type it in often if you use Face ID or a fingerprint.

And some may argue that they don’t use biometrics so this year have to type it often, but this feature already requires biometric to be turned on.

Your whole online security is only as strong as your weakest link. So imagine securing your shopping accounts and finances with just a 4 digit code (e.g. PayPal allows login with a text message code to your phone, without requiring a password).

So, I suggest not just relying on these new security features, but also be more proactive and setup a proper password and not some 4 digit code.

It took this long to get collaborative playlists working? You think they could have finished copying Spotify's homework before 17.1 was out, but I guess it took too long to cook up. :p

Is this the version where Matter works reliably enough to... matter?

I don't see how anyone would be hyped about Matter, it affords no benefit to anyone really.
I have some matter devices and they are stable enough. And since Matter is only a specification, it’s the vendors you should blame. Companies like Apple, Amazon…

Matter 1.2 has some important new features, especially an improvement for smart locks, which will be a very big deal here in Europe. And I really hope that Apple adopts that soon.

Will be updating my devices next week. Thinking of turning on stolen device protection. The wallpaper is also good.

How about FaceID / Pincode to switch device off?
Apple's Find My network can be used to track a lost or stolen iPhone, even if it's been turned off or offline. For this to work, Find My Network will need to be enabled on the iPhone before it's lost. The feature is only available on the iPhone 11 and later models.

Apple's iOS 15 update brings a big improvement to Find My that makes it possible to locate your lost iPhone even when the device has been turned off or the battery has died. This feature works automatically so long as you have the Find My network enabled on your iPhone. That means your iPhone's location will remain visible in Find My on your other devices and to people in your Family Sharing group regardless of whether the phone is powered on.
