Following the introduction of the new Chomp-styled App Store layout in iOS 6, built upon Apple's acquisition of the app search and discovery platform earlier this year, Apple over the weekend shut down the standalone Chomp service.

Chomp had previously been available as both website and app tools for iOS and Android, but Apple killed off the Android functionality in late April following its acquisition of Chomp. The Chomp website and iOS app remained functional until this weekend, however, when Apple removed the Chomp app from the App Store and redirected the Chomp website to apple.com.

As noted in our forums, existing users of the iOS app have also been shut out, as Apple has discontinued the service effective yesterday.
Chomp has been discontinued as of September 30. Thanks for being a loyal user.

Apple's new Chomp-inspired App Store layout for iOS has drawn a fair amount of criticism, with some users complaining that search and discovery is much more difficult with the new interface showing just a single search result at a time.

The old vertical shape was much easier to search for apps

i hate this clusterfug. if i want to search something i obvs need to find it easily and dont need a suggestion one by one

I'm definitely not a fan. It slows users down when looking for application as they cant view the entire list on screen. This means they might not find an application which is more relevant to them lower down the list!

Also bad for app developers like me, as it makes it much harder to get noticed.

They must assume people only use search to pull up a specific app. For example, I search for general terms like "twitter" or "movie showtimes" so I can browse a bunch of apps to compare and see if any of them look good.

If I see this I am SO glad the Dropbox guys refused the Apple takeover.

Dropbox is still owning iCloud on every single aspect (integration, ease-of-use and functionality), imagine what a waste of an excelent service it would have been if Apple got it: they would have used the tech to make iCloud more quickly than they did now, but iCloud would still have been the closed blob lacking fucntionality it is today.

It's as if Apple's just trying to piss their consumers off..

What Apple seems to need are some good app developers. Their own apps should be the superior ones or at least part of the top 1% of apple.

To me, iCloud is transparent. It just works. Used Dropbox for a while to sync stuff. After the installation, account creation, initial sync, dealing with moany errors and "upgrade to premium" nags, I'm happy with iCloud doing it all for me.

If anything, it would have been a continuation of the iDisk (which I sorely miss).

I agree with others it is absolutely TERRIBLE. Honestly how can they come up with worse ideas? Not only is it just slow to scroll through and find what you are searching, but in order to get accurate results, you have to type it in extremely accurately. It is just not something I could imagine from Apple, or 2012 technology. Did I mention it crashes a decent amount on iPod Touch 4G?

Howso? They bought Chomp and integrated it into their own store design. Don't let that get in the way of your caterwauling though.

Because users had a choice, and now they don't? And that future app discovery and curation apps will be rejected?

Maybe I'm the only one but I prefer it... When you're searching for say, a spreadsheet app. You can actually see a screenshot of the app as you scroll past. Pretty useful if you ask me!

I like the new design better, personally. I think it is much more useful to have an actual screenshot of the app to see without any additional taps. I did not like having to scroll through a big long list of app titles with only a tiny icon to give me an idea of what the app did before I tapped on it. Before I'd have to tap on every result to have any idea of what it was like, which is terribly tedious.

I do think that having a list view of the search results would be good to still have as an option, however.

Yes but it doesn't always work right even when you type the exact name of the app. I wanted the app "Restaurant Nutrition" yesterday and typed that in exactly to search and the first time it came up on about the 4th "tile." Subsequent searches brought it to the first tile (after I downloaded the app).
