Sad to hear. Hopefully there will be refurbs available for those who want one still.

works as well as the day I got it

I brought mine in to work today just like most other days. It works wonderfully and did just what I asked it to do (music and podcasts). Feeling kinda sad now for the end of an era.

It is embarrassing tho when I forget and tap the click wheel and screen.

What an appropriate image for this article! 'That's it!'

I'm glad I got a classic when I could. It's perfect for the car, until Apple releases something with enough storage to hold a modern music library.

all this means to me is that my next car will have to have CarPlay in it. The only value of the classic was turning a crappy factory in dash into something modestly useful as a car stereo.

that's so Apple...

I just can't believe Apple was still selling the iPod Classic at the SAME PRICE POINT for the last 5 years WITHOUT updating the storage capacity even once the entire time, or even offering it for a little less $$$ each year. Wow.

Still using my first gen Nano. The iPod sure was a sweet line of products there at the end. Now they’ve got a new line of products to focus on, and the torch passes. See ya around, iPod.

Why wouldn't they? The only people who bought it specifically bought it for the 160GB capacity so they were going to pay whatever Apple was asking for it. And considering how niche the 1.8" HDD market is, I wonder if Apple's costs on the Classic really came down all that much (the HDD itself retails in the neighborhood of $150) so that might have kept them at the $249 price point for margin protection.

Still need a 1TB (or preferably a 2TB) HD audio device. Dang it, I want all my music with me when I travel!

Streaming doesn't cut it :(

iPod didn't even get a mention yet again. Real shame. Looks like it will be dead and buried within the next couple of years unless they're planning to do something radical like increase the capacity and offer HD downloads through iTunes. Speaking of which are they going to mend that creaking pile of poo or not? Sorry Tim but a free U2 album doesn't make up for the multitude of bugs you still haven't fixed in iTunes.

Sad to see it go, but not surprised. The click wheel was a great interface for music, I like it better than the iOS one but I'm just surprised the classic lasted this long.

At least we know for sure now.

RIP, 1st Apple product I ever owned, got me hooked on Apple along with millions of others.

Noooo!!!! My first Apple device was a first gen shuffle, and my second was an 80gb Classic. I admittedly don't use it that much, but it's nice knowing I have one portable device with all of my music. Guess I'll be visiting the little shop that does unauthorized repairs to keep it running.

I swear the only thing after today that has me a little excited is the Watch, but I'm not sure why I would need one.

The irony here is the brand new apple webpage.... has a nice new logo of a classic iPod :)

Sure it would look the same as the iPhone icon... but they could just add the loop strap.

A couple years ago i would've been mad about this but not so much now. My old classic died and I find myself not needing that much space at all. I don't need all my stuff with my at all times. I'm using an old nano now and it's much easier and lighter to carry around.

Just ordered a 160gb from Amazon. I love the Classic, since I got the 80gb 5.5G one in... 2007ish (?) I've filled it with videos and have used it daily. I find it great to watch at night before sleeping.

The batteries still good on it but prices for a new Classic are only going to go up from here! That's my reasoning, anyways.

But what a life they've had! Borrowed money off my parents to buy the iPod 3G when it launched all those years ago, which got me into Mac computers too (the old "Halo" effect). Foolishly replaced it with an iPod Mini a few years later.

It had a damn good run.

Yes it did. Anticipating this typically silent tradition, I bought a new one just last month to have as a spare. It's a great repository and redundant storage location for my music library. Combined with copies in the cloud and on my NAS network I'm well protected.
