I am so glad I bought my ipod classic back in June! It has it's place in my life. I only very dearly hope it will last a lifetime, literally. This is the end of an era, people. RIP scroll wheel 2001-2014

That's it. The product that launched Apple to a level of meteoric success is now quickly becoming a thing of the past with the iPhone but I hope Apple always appreciates what the iPod did for them and at least let the iPod touch, nano, and shuffle live on as long as they're viable products before the whole iPod line becomes just a thing of the not so distant past.

Everyone will miss you dearly, old friend :(. It's already seen it's better days. And soon enough, it will be the non-retina 13 inch MacBook Pro's turn to be laid to rest in the iCloud, the only current MacBook Pro notebook that still has a removable battery (besides the MacBook Air, a feature that I dearly miss in rMBPs), and upgradable memory. I'm also praying that the Mac Mini doesn't bite the dust. It needs a Haswell update very badly.

Still using mine.

I originally bought a 128GB iPad Mini to replace the Classic but after several months of using the iPad as my in car iPod, I've gone back to using the Classic.

Nothing beats it.

I tried doing the same thing with my iPad Air, and I too reverted to my classic. The iPad was just too big to store anywhere comfortably, and the only benefit I saw was that when using the iPad, my car stereo would display album art (for some reason when using the classic I just see a generic music icon). In the end my classic was far too convenient not to keep using. Solder on my friend!

iPod Classic...still the only way to carry your entire music collection...and quickly add a currently playing song to your on-the-go playlist.

Posted in a speculation thread before now I figured I'd copy and paste my response into the more appropriate confirmed dead thread.

This is rather disappointing as I really wanted to see an ipod with a capacity larger than 160gb, granted I know they have mods to throw in a 240gb drive (truly 220gb) but that still is not enough for me. My whole library is on itunes and as of today, apple's current largest ipod is 64gb, they've gone backwards in storage size, what a joke. Sure it's flash memory and they've eliminated an optical drive but storage should at least be competitive with the classic 160gb as 64gb isn't anywhere near the ball park. A smart decision would've been to eliminate optical drives from the classic and move toward larger storage flash memory for the classics they could've easily done a 256gb model. I will never buy an ipod touch from apple as they don't even consider nor have a real music listener or audiophile in mind. I don't need no fancy full color touch screen, I have no need to play games or use apps as I already have an iphone and don't need a second one minus the ability to call people. The ipod did what you wanted to do store and play music, simple, cut and dry. What we need is a true audiophile player because as of now it looks like I'm going to have purchase a secondhand 160 and upgrade both of my 160's to 240s and split my library amongst the two classics.

I always thought Apple would have made flash memory based iPod Classic that had a 256GB and 512GB of space. I could imagine the "thin-ness" of such a device that Apple loves to throw around. Combine that with a Retina display and we could have the perfect iPod.

But nope. Apple saw the iPod a dying business.

Goodbye my friend, it's hard to die
When all the birds are singing in the sky
Now that the Spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and I'll be there

We had joy, we had fun
We had seasons in the sun
But the hills that we climbed
Were just seasons out of time

:(

I never owned an iPod Classic, but had several 20gb and 30gb iPods that really were great.

I wonder if the Classic will show up in the Refurb store at some point here soon. For now, if you want one, best head to a Target store, which the ones close to me still sell them (the charcoal color model)

Wow thanks for sharing, what a great thread. A great reminder to stop b***hing about everything new all the time on the MR forum.

It's always hilarious to read how wrong people are after the fact :)

I still have my iPod classic and I still use it at the gym. While I wish it had streaming functionality for Pandora at the office, it's the perfect workout companion and car companion.

Best part is that my Bose earbuds with the remote control the start/stop/skip/rewind functions too, so its easy to flip through my workout playlist.

Hopefully mine never dies!

Let's have a moment of silence.

It's also been removed from the floor in stores. yesterday when the visual folks came out to do it, as they left the floor, the staff gave the iPod a clap out. My boyfriend said the customer reactions were hilarious. Especially when they said the Classic was one of the oldest members of the staff (which is also a little sad that not even the manager has been there longer)

what i wonder is what this might mean for the other iPods. Does this confirm we will have a 128 GB iPod touch for example

I still have an iPod classic 80Gb (back when that size was just released) Really wish it could have held on, maybe merge the touch and classic to make a 160Gb iPod touch?

Apple should now make a bigger touch, yes I know you can get a iPad Mini 128Gb but sometime you want lots of music but not a 'big' screen so a 128Gb (or 256Gb) touch classic would be great for those who must have all their music with them.

Just picked up the last 3 from my local Target….man, these are gone in minutes, glad I picked up mine…others can wait in line for fugly iPhone 6

Few tips if you want that iPod for life…every month, drain the battery below 10% but not until it dies, and recharge to full. Also, when its on shuffle and using the hard drive, don't move it around or shake it…but one you are in a playlist, the hard drive not moving at this moment, you can move it around

. I suppose I should look into getting an Astell & Kern. :(

Pifff! Not at over a thousand dollars. This is why I hate that apple is leaving the dedicated mp3 business. Other companies will either put out complete junk or high end reference grade units that are unattainable price wise for most and require an engineering degree to get it set up.

its pretty frustrating. My 160gb classic just died on me and i need a new high capacity one to go in my car.

will apple start offering some good options with at least 128GB? that can work with car systems?

i really hope so.

and that can playback higher quality audio. its time to finally pay attention to the ipod line again.

For the true U2 fan.

U2 + ipod HiFi for a small fortune.

Funny that this is still the icon on the online store

They could do a "Mac pro" and have removed it to re-introduce it just under the name "The New iPod". Lightning port, beats headphones in white, smaller click wheel, 3" screen, 256GB Flash, Airdrop for iTunes to download songs and video, bluetooth 4.0. Then back to iPod prices of old.

The iPod range needs a massive kick, that would be it. As for the iPod Touch, where will it go from here, 4.7" and 5.5" are too big!

Realistically though, how many iPods is Apple even selling these days? I'll probably never buy another one, I just use my iPhone. I feel like the iPhone made the iPod obsolete, especially now that we're seeing higher capacities.
