Fact #1: Amazon represents a fraction of their total sales.
Fact #2: Amazon electronics is us centric.
Fact #3: Apple's largest market is "OUTSIDE" of the US.

LOL Yeah sure dude. Anymore crap you want to make up?

Amazon is a large retailer and there isn't much reason to think the Classic isn't selling as well outside of Amazon too.

Its the 2nd highest selling iPod at Walmart.com too.
Its the 2nd highest selling iPod at bestbuy.com too.

The only place downplaying its sales is Apple themselves and they are doing it because the iOS devices are now their cash cow.

Apples largest market is the United States, they have the 3rd largest US Market Cap in the United States (In 2010, probably 2nd now).

Oh well I've been eying alternatives to the iPod for awhile now, only reasons I've been with them was because of all the music I purchased back in the DRM days and iTunes smart list support is exceptional.

Certainly not going to be using iCloud either with the ridiculous costs of wireless with a paltry 2GB/mo depending on who you go through.

Like I've said before.

People have large libraries and want them to be portable would buy the iPod classic. Plus, it does its job as a car media player quite well.

I only have a paltry media library but I could get the classic for nostalgic reasons as I had a broken :)() 1st gen iPod nano and the new nano lacks the good 'ole click wheel.

10 years on, and the iPod (original design) is toast.

GOOD.

10 years for such a design is a nice, tidy span of life. Would you still love an original design iMac? No. Would you still want an original design Mac?

No, but I'd love a 2G iMac, which came out about the same time as the iPod. And a 2011 Cube would be awesome as well.

Every has different needs. I need a high capacity, portable music player. Bells and whistles would simply get in the way, since I have an iPhone in my other pocket. So until I get an iPhone (NOT a Touch) with 160GB or more (unlikely to happen soon, I'd wager), I'll still have a need for the Classic.

The original is still the best.

Frankly, at this point anyone who really wants a Classic already has one. The market for even huger music players has got to be minuscule, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them introduce a 128 GB Touch next week, which probably comes close enough for most people's purposes. I'm not saying it's completely nonexistent, but it's probably not worth it to Apple to continue making them.

speak for yourself... if apple doesnt come out with a new ipod classic ill get the 160 one theres no point in buying a 128 ipod touch if i have a freakin iphone..

iInternet??? isnt it interesting that evreryone is stressing cloud while they are taking away your bandwidth? what a rip off

If they do stop them, I hope we have enough time to order after the event. This week iv been tempted to buy one just in case.

They could very well be getting rid of the click wheel, and going to touch based?

Im just not ready to accept the fact that they are killing a line that still makes them money.

I want all my music and videos, and I don't want to need an internet connection to get to them. The iPod Classic is the perfect music player. This thread makes me want to go hug it.

Despite your mountain of logic, this isn't true.

Black Classic: #3, 750 days in the top 100
Silver Classic: #5, 747 days in the top 100

wise... plus people are more likely to get an iphone and an ipod classic than a iphone and an ipod touch.... who is apple gaining by getting rid of it????

----------

And they are both outselling the 64GB touch.

owned.... thats 64gb price is too much... its the price for a used iphone 4... who would spend that much on such a thing..

----------

You only think it is crazy because you currently have the 160 GB option. If you look at in context of what people were willing to pay for first generation iPods, and in the absence of another competitive option, it's not crazy at all.

Keep in mind that the entire iPod business is only a $1B annual business for Apple, and the >64GB part is only a small slice of that. So I really think Apple would rationale the line down to two models rather than four, even if that means $100M less in annual business.

Also: I'm not sure killing the games means that the end of the Classic is imminent. This may be a market signal of a longer term phaseout-- if they are planning to kill it in 2013, now is a good time to make it clear to developers not to invest in this platform, or to buyers that this will have a limited life. You can be pretty sure that when Apple can sell a 128GB Touch for $299 they will kill the Classic; but until then they may choose to keep it on.

if they sale it for 299 i would get it and be angry... because i have an iphone but nonthelesss

I will order one when they discontinue them.

So will I. By that moment, I am still in hope for an updated one.

To be honest - me too (hoping for an updated version) . I am not sure when is the best time to order. I think if they really discontinue them I cannot order them anymore through Apple and cannot get them engraved.

Hmm. Maybe I place my order just before the event and cancel it if it isn't discontinued.

iPod classic

I purchased an iPod classic from the Apple Store earlier tonight. 2001-2011. :(

Apple could of really give us a warning that they were going to remove the games :/. I kinda knew the iPod Classic was going to die, so i bought one last month. I <3 it much more than my touch! I kinda dislike having a TOUCH screen D: . But yeah! More WARNING PLEASE APPLE!
I LITERALLY went and bought an iTunes Giftcard to get SIMS BOWLING yesterday! </3

Agreed.
Even if they are going to discontinue the product, isn't removing the games a bit mean?
Why not leave them up for people that already have classics?!

I know you're all thinking that there will be a 128 GB iPod touch this year to replace the Classic.

But you're wrong. The Classic will be discontinued, and the iPod touch will remain at 64 GB maximum capacity.

And I thought that the 64G touch would be a huge downgrade for me from my classic. I mean, it's got like a tenth the storage...

However, when I started choosing what music to put on the touch, I found out that out of all the music that I had, that I listen to, I couldn't fill the 64G.

I don't do video on such a small device and only have a limited number of apps but I expected to be unhappy with the 'upgrade' to the smaller touch, and I wasn't. I mean, I don't need my entire Mozart music collection when traveling, etc. That saved a lot of space.

Hording music. How much did I need to carry, and how much of that would I actually listen too. I was surprised at the answer I guess...

I just hope that ending this product, means that something even more revolutionary will be coming next week. (doubt it)

think i'm going to stock up on classic ipods now!

I hope they dont get rid of the click wheel. The click wheel saved apple when they released it. That's why they have the name and the image they have today.
Don't kill the click wheel apple!!

And please put it back on the iPod Nano!!!!!!

I still have a 30gb Video which I believe is the 5th gen? Love it and fits and looks great on my JBL soundstage. Luckily bought and have backed up Peggle for it. Of all the games I tried on the click wheel I must say I enjoyed Peggle the best.

I am sad to see the line end but I kinda thought this was around the corner. I really think the day of the Disk hard drive is coming to a end. The SSD and Flash Memory technology is about to have its showing till the next great thing. At least for smaller portable devices. 1 and 2 TB drives are something most of us would not want to live without and cost wise 2TB in SSD is insane. But maybe in 3 years it will be the norm.

Changes happen but sad to see them pull games. There is a nostalgia to them and they are still useful to the continuing users of the click wheel.

Curious if some of you guys are serious about stocking up before the announcement?

Wouldn't Apple put the remaining ones on sale on Apple.com? I would think they have a fair amount (might be way off)

All of my friends use some form of a click wheel iPod around the house or in their cars. None of us want to deal with a touchscreen when we want to have a few cocktails on the deck and listen to some tunes.

Is Apple turning into Comcast? A company who tries to force you to buy pricier products to get features that few people want by having no other options.

I'm heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem, but I plan on always having some dedicated music devices. If I get old iPods on eBay or start buying Sansa players, I'll have them. Many love the iPod touch, its not at all for me. I don't want to field calls on my iphone while it's hooked up to the stereo in my boat. I think many feel the same.

But, I don't think that the end of the clickwheel games store really proofs that Apple wants to kill Classic. Maybe the store just wasn't profitable anymore...

Audiophiles will miss these the most.

How much could it possibly be costing them to keep the clickwheel game store open? If they're not killing the Classic, the only explanation is that Steve didn't like the aesthetics of that section on the iTunes Store or something.

I suppose when my current 120 GB iPod Classic finally poops out, I'll have to go to eBay to get a new one. There's no way in hell I'll pay $399 to house all of my music files. I don't want apps. I don't want games. I just want a MUSIC PLAYER that is simple to use and has a high storage capacity.
