This is idiotic because many people still use these devices and there's no reason to make the software unavailable. It can hardly take up any space on Apple's servers. Just another move by Apple to screw its past customers. There is no apologizing for this corporation's continual abandonment of support for older devices. Plus, at present you can still buy devices that use this software so they will still be in use for some time to come even if Apple stops selling them tomorrow. Trying to force people to throw out their perfectly functional devices to buy something new is all it is.

For the very short time I had a 160GB iPod classic, I did play the three games that came on it from the factory. However I don't believe they were every massively popular, So I'm not surprised Apple is taking more steps towards retiring the iPod Classic.

They're going to. BBC confirmed in an interview that Apple is discontinuing the Classic. They're probably just selling through remaining stock at this point.

I guess there is no source for this. My girlfriend just bought me an iPod Classic for my birthday back in July. I missed owning one, i think this is my 7th one - counting the replacements. It'd be very upsetting if they discontinue it. I really don't want an iPod touch being that I already have an iPhone.

I Still Enjoy My iPod Classic

Have to say I was shocked when I went to the iTunes store today and all the click wheel games were gone. Without a warning. However, the iTunes HELP menu still contains instructions on how to buy click wheel games. I like the iPod Classic for its huge capacity, ability to use it for volume control in the dark without even looking at the unit. It has excellent audio qualities. There was no need to dump and run from this product which is, by the way, still being sold in stores and on line. This shows disdain for "old" Apple customers and may be the end of my purchases of anything further from Apple. I think the company has gone astray already - and will lose its cachet if this is the way they want to do business. By the way, that new iTunes Use Agreement is something you ought to read. I could not bring myself to sign it. It is all for Apple and nothing for the customer. No iPhone for me. Canary in the Coal Mine? Perhaps.

I love my iPod classic & will until it dies.
I believe that Apple have the right to discontinue products at their whim, for what ever reason they choose, regardless of whether they replace it with another product.
The thing that bothers me is they are advertising this product dishonestly.

"Play iPod games.
Put hours of fun at your fingertips. iPod classic comes with three games — Vortex, iQuiz, and Klondike — and you can purchase games such as Cake Mania from the iTunes Store."

I pity anyone falling for this erroneous propaganda, which presumably hasn't been updated to help clear remaining stocks before they discontinue it.

I know this is an old thread, but I just stumbled upon it.
I played Peggle on my iPod classic (80GB Black) all the way through. Every level, mastery on every challenge. It was perfect. I don't know why, or how, but I found that particular version of Peggle to be more fun than the PC version and even the iOS version.

I am flummoxed by Apple's decision to clear up a few Megabytes worth of room on the server to delete programs for hardware they are still selling. In fact, these programs should have been available for people until 3 or 4 years after the Classic is officially discontinued, if not forever. Why not?

sad day. still use my ipod classic everyday on the morning commute.

I also have mine connected to the OEM iPod jack that came on the car. It's a great setup that has worked flawlessly.

But there's the problem, and it's a bad one.

As long as I continue to enjoy it Apple suffers. Whenever I have friends in my car they ask me about it, when I tell them how happy I've been & it's spotless track record, well there's the problem. Another happy Apple customer.

No headlines, no lawsuits, nothing but smiles. That's more than Apple can handle.

They want angst, discord, scratches & a replay of Antennagate. What an odd company they are.

I miss this kind of iPod. Everything is going touch these days, but for those who just love to carry and listen to their music with them everywhere they go, nothing beats the iPod classic interface.

I have a 250GB iTunes library, I wish I could carry it anywhere and anytime.
