Are they gonna sell whatever stock's left as an "educational" item for original retail price?

My thought is that with iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan, Apple is trying to make "Snow Leopard-like" releases for devices at the lower-end of their product ranges before they get dropped from iOS 10/OS X 10.12.
That's what I think as well. They know those devices will be dropped next year (even Craig Federighi said they won't drop any devices "this" year), so they want for them to at least have a stable release.

Sadly it is still being used in the iPod Touch and the Apple TV 3.

It looks like a shortsighted profit oriented decision to sell outdated devices for such a long time. I don't know how this will work out for future iOS versions. They will get iOS9. But after that? A5 iPads/iPhones/iPods have a huge marketshare that can't be easily cut off.
They do have a huge marketshare, but it will start to get smaller once they start selling newer devices. Plus, I don't think they can complain too much about iOS support, especially iPad 2 users who essentially got 5.5 years worth!

It's about time. They need to clear out the iPad Mini 2 as well, seeing as it is basically the same thing as the Mini 3, but without Touch ID and a gold color option.

Poppycock.

They should remove the iPad mini 3, as it is basically the same thing as the iPad mini 2, but costs £100 more. They should never have brought out the iPad mini 3; it embarrasses Apple.

I believe that Steve Jobs would not have released it.

I think they should make a 4GB version of this without the camera on the back, and sell it for $100 to enterprise. For use in point of sale systems, restaurant menus, showcases, and other such single-app uses. For those simple apps, where all resources can be dedicated to that one app and no multitasking, it is plenty fast enough, 16GB is overkill.
That's a fantastic idea. Although, $100 is too cheap. Maybe $189.

Not surprising, I was using my wife's old iPad mini and running some apps was noticeably slower. I think the demands of modern apps have surpassed the ability of the gen 1 mini.

Nope. Apple is still selling the Apple TV and iPod Touch 5. The A5 chip will forever be known as "The chip that won't die"
Yep, support from early 2011 to late 2016, or 5.5 years. The next chip that probably "won't die" is the A7, even more so because the A8 isn't a big improvement. Probably every odd-numbered A-chip will have similar fates.

I guess the next gen (Mini Air?) will replace the 3 and the Mini 2 will stick around at the lower price. I sure hope it comes soon. My original Mini is getting on my last nerve.

On the other hand, maybe there won't be a next gen Mini.

Hmmm…getting rid of a primary A5 device makes me think that we might finally see EOL on the Apple TV gen 3 which also uses an A5. Apple tends to keep these older devices around because they keep making the chips in them for years which makes the price on lower-margin products even cheaper. If they stop producing them at such scale then other devices will probably also EOL.

It's about time. They need to clear out the iPad Mini 2 as well, seeing as it is basically the same thing as the Mini 3, but without Touch ID and a gold color option.

Apple really needs to simplify their entire device lineup. One new version and one previous-gen version. This multiple generations for sale crap is confusing for the customer and trying to maintain a more complex product pipeline probably isn't worth it. Especially considering all the work they have to do to maintain older devices in software updates.

I wonder why they waited until today to drop it and not in October to be replaced by newer iPads. The iPod touch is still being sold, so it can't be for the same reason.

It's about time SOMETHING is done with the iPod Touch. They should probably just get rid of it and only sell an iPod Nano.

A5 is finally gone

Well not completely with the iPod Touch and Apple TV, but it's pretty crazy that it's 2015 and we're just now starting to see the second generation iPad chip go away.

Makes sense. I got an email yesterday from walmart saying they dropped the price to $199.

And with it, goes the last of the non-retina display for mobile devices from Apple. Next legacy item to go: the cMBP and with it, the end of FireWire and the optical drive.
