Other than kids, does anyone even use or care about iPods anymore. I myself have a 2nd gen nano docked on my desk that is nothing more than a show piece. All grey metal sitting in its white poly carbonate dock. :D

I have a 64GB in the glove box of my car connected to the stereo. When it dies, I would like another parked in there and would love it to hold significantly more. Wish my prius just had a USB port, but oh well....

I hope they at least keep the design in the next generation of iPods. In the car it's much easier for me to use a click wheel iPod than a touch. I still use my 5th gen iPod video.

I still use mine in my car. I bring it in and sync to load more music when needed. So much easier to use in the car and the music doesn't get stopped when someone calls me. I may need to buy 2-3 of these and keep them in the box in case my current one dies. Unless Apple cuts its syncing support from iTunes.

iTunes Match limit is just too low. Give me at least 50k songs. Why can Amazon offer 250k songs with their similar service?

I hope Apple is going to disprove it, but my belief is that it all goes to a matter of numbers. iPod declining sales are not carrying dollars and dollars in Apple's safe, so any effort in r&d it's not worth.
All in spite of PR declarations about "great products"

I seriously hope that they will release new iPod Classic with at least 128gb of flash storage... well at least an iPod Nano with 64gb! If they really plan to sell lossless music on the iTunes store, they need an iPod (besides the Touch) with more than 64gb of storage...
And they could to an iPod Nano with 128gb of storage on a single chip since the iPad use that design.

Totally agree. My hi-res music takes up a huge amount of space, even when reduced in quality so it will play on an iPhone. 64GB is a minimum amount of storage for serious music lovers.

I actually hoped that they would release a new classic with:

1. Flash storage
2. New lightning connector
3. Doubling the resolution from 320-by-240-pixel (163 ppi) to 640-by-480-pixel (326 ppi) aka. Retina Display

Guess that was wishful thinking.

I am also screwed because I exceed the 25K song limit, I can't sign up for iTunes Match to stream my library.

I had to break out all my concerts into another library and upload them to amazon's cloud player. Now my normal music is on match and my live music is in amazon...go figure.

My iPod pretty much lives in my car and get synced every few weeks. One thing's for sure, the genius works much better if you have lots of music.

"Purchasing iWatch as a substitute"

I don't get it. I don't see how "I need a device that can store a gigantic music library and have a battery that lasts for a week" translates to buying a watch.

Two possible reasons:

1 - Finally we'll stop having posts about how Apple is rumored to discontinue the iPod Classic. They've been around for several years now.

2 - They bought a large supply of iPod Classics in the hope that in 30 years they'll be able to sell them for billions of dollars because of their vintage condition and their status as collectables.

Clearly a lot of people think the iPod Classic is still a great product.

... You want it discontinued just so you can stop reading rumors about it?

Like, seriously?

Just don't read the rumors if you're sick of hearing about it.

Couldn't agree more!

Apple and Beats say they care about music and music lovers. I'm not giving up on a new Classic or a new high capacity device, they may have something great in the pipeline to address this shrinking, but not small market. :)

Maybe I should scoop one up before they're gone. My iPod Nano (4th gen) is not lasting too long on battery these days. I get a few uses out of it but I certainly have to charge it more often now. I'm a huge fan of the "traditional" iPod. I never cared for "touching my music".

maybe clearing the way for a HD replacement? i guess though with their focus on CarPlay within the next year or so most people won't need a classic to stash in their glove boxes to convert their crappy in dash factory system into a decent music player. Pretty sure most classics live this fate, locked in the glovebox pumping the tunes to some otherwise pathetic in dash unit that wishes it were an ipad or next years CarPlay unit.

Why do you care about Apple discontinuing products?

Because I like to see Apple maintaining a clean product line up. It's been a great formula for their successful business, that much of their product families include just two sizes. So I can appreciate that they remain true to their ideals of focusing on a few products and ditching older hardware and technologies to make way for the new. I know people will always disagree with these kinds of decisions but if you look at Apple's long term history, they have always been known to do this since the beginning.

Anyway, personally I think it just makes sense to drop the classic once the iPod Touch gets a 128GB option. Drop the "Touch" and bring it back to just calling it iPod again. Back to basics.

Every year everyone says the iPod Classic is dead. And yet every year they when they refresh every other iPod in the line they replace the images for the classic in the store with fresh, up to date album art.

So here's hoping they just are no longer offering refurbs, but still will sell brand new ones (for what its worth, I can't remember the last time a refurb even showed up...)

Would still love to see a refresh of that product; lots of storage, and a hi-res DAC.

I hope they don't discontinue them as it's the only Ipod I like and I hate playing music on my Iphone, the whole interface is too cumbersome. When I replaced my 5.5 gen with a Classic last year, the guy at the Apple store told me they still sell a lot, more than people assume. He of course couldn't provide any numbers. A quick search on amazon shows the black Classic is #6 in the MP3 player category, not too bad for an older item.

Maybe I'm dreaming in technicolour...

...but could this be an indication of a proper replacement device to be announced at the keynote WWDC?

Cook has promised "great things"
Cue has said that the pipeline is the best he has seen in 25 years
It would be nice to see something more than a speed bump in the Airs without having to wait until September

I agree with many of the prior posters - 25K isn't enough for iCloud; speeds aren't consistent enough to support streaming everywhere and data caps don't allow it anyhow; and my collection is too eclectic to expect any of the streaming companies to have whatever my mood calls for. We still need an ultra-high capacity portable device.

Fortunately mine is still alive and well. Hopefully it'll last for years to come. Really can't part with mine :(

They should discontinue the classic and the shuffle, and use the beats purchase as an excuse to increase the audio quality of the Touch and the Nano and give them high-res music support. Like how in the beats commercials Dre says that Beats let you hear the music how the artists intended, then you can too with high-res music on your ipods now. And with only 2 models the Nano will be for basic music playing and Touch is for if you want a full fledged iOS device. And increase the max Touch capacity up to 128 gb.

The iPod business is declining and so it makes sense for them to slim down the lineup. I'm assuming the two worst selling models are the classic and the shuffle. They will probably never do a re-design of any ipods at this point but with streamlining and tweaking the current lineup they can get the most out of a dying product category.

You can't tell the difference so why bother?

:(

That streaming crap is useless in my area. Neither broadband connections or phone networks are anywhere near ready to handle it. For all of your music on the go, the iPod Classic is one of the few viable options. I hope Apple realizes this and still continues selling it.

The fact remains that it is only big city folk with unlimited data plans that can really do this...the internet, overall, is simply not ready for everything to be in iCloud or streaming only...plus some...many of us either have limited data plans or using too much will make the provider throttle our speed down....APPLE needs to realize this and take it down a notch...remember that it is the minority that are capable or can afford to stream everything at this point in time.

That being said, I doubt the classic will survive another generation of iPods, but, maybe we'll see a 128GB option.

I stream music, but have one of two limitations available...only so many GBs OR they throttle me if I go over a certain point anyway...so I can't stream music as much as I might like to. I also use stored music and podcasts (w/cell data OFF) to help keep from going over.

The end is nigh my friends. Goodnight sweet prince. :apple:

For old time's sake...

When the iPod was out I waited a very long for it to drop the price and buy one because I felt its price for a music player was very high (I do not take music seriously) . Eventually an iPhone was released and it got confusing if I should get a phone+mp3 player or just the mp3 player. It did not help that there was an iPod touch too. Eventually my first iOS/iPod device I got was ironically the iPad.

Here the iPod is probably going to die and and discontinued and I never got one. I missed on experiencing this culture icon and regrettably still wish I got to experience the click wheel which was amazing for its time.

moral of the story is: If you want to do something do it now, do not wait and be patient. Things go out of fashion, the experiences change, and everyday you be more patient you are losing more time in your life to enjoy whats out there already.

Yup they are going, writing is on the wall. Gotta get one soon I dropped and broke mine.
