Is this ONLY in the US? What about Canada getting the SIM card version?
Looking at the Apple.ca site looks like all iPhone 14 models retain the physical SIM card tray in addition to dual eSIM support. So just buy the Canadian version which should work fine in the US on most networks with the exception of perhaps Verizon.

We get the nano-sim version while the US gets the mmWave.

The only problem Airalo is far more expensive then local tourist physical sim.

It’s like being robbed.
Oh I didn’t realize that. Well hopefully tourist shops will carry the QR code sims to compete. I’m sure they will within two years.

You have to pay the sales tax - but how many would declare the phone at the border? I of course would as I’m sure you would, but other other “bad” people probably would not. 🤣
Haha, good one. I'm really thinking of going to Canada to get one, but the other issue is if you can even find one in stock. Not sure how supply will be in the first few weeks. I know Apple won't ship to a non-Canadian address, but I wonder if you can use a US credit card to reserve one for pickup in store.

Did anybody answer this? [edited - oops I see just above]

Yes. Too many times. Yes it is only US. Canada gets to keep the nano SIM. Before you make a decision, compare the Canadian model to the bands used by your carrier.

If you are driving up you could also check out the telcos like Rogers, Bell, Telus and so on. The down side is that they will try to sell you a plan. Why even bother with the card, convert your American dollars to Canadian and buy it with cash. Then for sure “The Man” won’t know. Call around and if you find what you like have them hold it for you. Then the trip is well worth it.

Oh - I see you wanted to reserve it with the card. Most will do it for free if only a day or two.

I wouldn't be surprised that both Canada and Mexican cellphone carriers will allow the use the eSIM's within the next year or so. Telus, Rogers and Bell may probably do so by the end of 2022.

Mexico’s Telcel hasn’t allowed it these four years and hasn’t shown any signs that it intends to change that anytime soon.

For Mexico, ATT and Movistar already do.

BL.

Which is a much bigger problem than it seems at first glance considering that Telcel, not in that list, has the largest network qnd customer base in Mexico.

Is this a real-world problem already or just a theoretical one?

If one is concerned, what's the highest amount of account security one can request with AT&T? Are there options beyond just the account pass code? Thanks.
It’s real:

I’m not sure what the tiers of security levels are. I just called and told them to put a flag on my account to not allow a SIM change without me being physically present with proof it’s me.

Right, but is there any evidence of this being easier via eSIM? Those seem like random ID theft combined with social engineering (or insider corruption). It appears neither a stolen SIM or an eSIM were involved in the story you linked.

Let me show you how bad this really is for US customers who travel frequently

On airalo- you pay $45 for 20GB and 30 day validity. There is no voice included- only data.

For physical SIM card deal- $14 USD (picture is in SGD). You get 50GB for same 30 days. Plus 1000 minutes of talk time and you actually have a local number to make calls.

Btw- at least in T-Mobile case- roaming phone call is only $0.99 per minute compared to $2.99 per minute on AT&T.

Grab/Uber doesn’t work VoIP and without a physical number you are dead.

This hurts consumers period.

Not necessarily. If you’re using roaming, then no problem: eSIM iphones can still roam internationally on the same networks as their SIM card predecessors regardless of whether or not the carriers who operate those networks support eSIM activations for their own customers. If you prefer to activate service locally wherever you travel then it might be an issue in some countries, though many already have carriers that activate eSIMs.

Stop with this none sense lies.

I can give you 3 countries on my last trip that don’t have esim for tourist (prepaid). Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore (M1 doesn’t count because coverage sucks)

So tell me how the $1600 iPhone pro 14 max going to work in those 3 countries?

It’s a beautiful $1600 brick you are carrying.

Because in majority of the country you can’t get prepaid esim.

Got it. That is the problem.

Umm.. you should check the country you’re going to visit before making that assumption. Most countries that offer it for activation do have esims available, in one form or another.

BL.

Umm...

Everywhere you travel is supported. If you're looking for something prepaid, or explicitly saying tourist, of course they may try to get you into something else. Like I mentioned before with my friends that came up from Australia, they still ended up getting a local number up here instead of staying with their Australian number, which worked out to be cheaper for the entire time they were here. The same should be able to work for you overseas.

Incorrect!
Do your research before you share inaccurate information. Majority of cell companies will not invest and adopt esim for prepaid customers. Prepaid is at the bottom of the barrel. esim is for monthly plans. simply put. Hence why everyone on this thread is not having it. stupid and a ******** move from whoever at apple decided to do this for the US. Was planning to upgrade 7 phones in my household to iPhone 14 Pros tomorrow. Will not be doing that anymore. We need the option of a freaking physical sim.

And I just posted where your assumption is wrong, for all 3 countries you listed.

Do us all a favor and educate yourself. Start by clicking on the link you keep stupidly reposting. I travel to the UK a lot for work. All these carriers in the UK only offer esim for monthly plans only, not prepaid. Fail.

Actually, I’m quite correct. The countries listed not only have carriers who have adopted eSims, but are actively using them for the services they offer. That even includes here in the US.

I have. I travel to Australia from
The US frequently. When there, I’d get a plan I would use for less than 30 days. I cancel said plan when I am done. eSIMs work perfectly there with both Telstra and Optus.

If you’re wanting prepaid, then that’s different than saying that countries don’t offer eSIMs. That part is on you.

When is last time you actually travelled?

I just got back from Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, and Singapore yesterday.

Out of these 4 countries- none of them offer esim for prepaid and all of them require legal residence to get local postpaid plan.

Taiwan, Japan, and Singapore esim activation can only be done at carrier managed store. In case of Singtel, only the store in bugis can activate esim.

You aren’t correct. Because you don’t know the detail and actual use of esim in those country.

Lastly 3rd party esim only offer data not voice. Try to use Uber and grab tell me how does that work for you:

Just because Apple website tell you it’s supported doesn’t mean you can actually use it.

Fine- it work in one certain country.

How about this?

I will pay for your plane ticket to Taiwan with your brick iphone 14. Show me how you are going to get esim to work when the country don’t offer esim for pre-paid?

Show me how you are going to leave the airport? Given that you actually need a local voice number to receive calls so the healthy administrator can monitor you are staying in quaratine hotel.

Until then- your point is completely useless and wrong.
