So does this mean they are building 2 different versions of the iPhone 14 one with and one without a SIM tray?
They're building three versions. Apple had always made two versions, dual nano for China and Hong Kong, nano+eSIM for the rest of the world. Now it's three, dual nano for China and Hong Kong, eSIM only for US, nano+eSIM for the rest of the world.

Now this is the big question. How's eSIM portability if you want to cross platform. iPhone to iPhone is doable via the quick start setup, but what about iPhone to Android eSIM?

Hey where are those anti-trust lawyers when you need them?

You'd still be able to get a real SIM card from your carrier if the other phone needs one. Not great for temporarily switching back and forth, but a migration path is possible.

Well, all right! Only an hour drive to cross the border. 🤣
But will they sell an unlocked version though? 🤔
That I'm not 100% sure, but I've purchased a few iPhones from Apple retail stores here and have had no issues switching to any Canadian carriers.

More than just 3. They have a specific model for Soviet/Past Soviet countries too. I think they now got more iPhones models than ever before.

Oh yeah, there are more specific models, but in regards to SIM slot, there are three general versions. :)

What about Apple Care if I buy one from Canada?

It only covers Canada or the US, depending where it was purchased. I don't know if they would let you purchase a US AppleCare+ plan for a Canada model. Probably not.

Canada Terms and Conditions

"This Plan is offered and valid only in provinces or territories of Canada."

USA Terms and Conditions

"This Plan is offered and valid only in the fifty states of the United States of America and the District of Columbia."

My current carrier (living overseas) supports eSIMs and doesn't charge for it so I am excited. My US carrier also has eSIM and doesn't charge for it.

Sadly my home country doesn't even have eSIM yet. I am still upgrading though. I'll just keep my old XS Max for when I travel back to home country assuming carriers there don't launch eSIM by then. I am sure Apple is now pressuring carriers and this is just a warning.

I have made to believe that any iPhone purchased from Apple at full price is unlocked. Always confused about this though as this seems to be a North American issue.

This won't work with Verizon prepaid plans. :( This phone would require a switch, would cost me $1000/year to do both lines. Not good! It is money from my pocket so apple can save a few cents. They need to give us an option to buy with a pSim!
That's right! Canada model it is! With no US warranty....

"At this time prepaid service is unavailable with dual SIM with an eSIM technology."

I will not buy this phone.

When I visit family in the Philippines, a SIM swap is necessary. I stay there for a month at a time, and I need to get a sim in the phone with 40 gigs of data at least.

If I need to run around a developing nation trying to get someone who can do an esim for me vs just walking up to a stall on the corner and being good to go, I have no interest in this device.

Unless I can buy something on the grey market and get it working properly in the USA, there is no motivation for me to upgrade which I do every bloody year.

That makes it simple.
Had my doubts about getting a 14. This confirms I will not.
Sadly that means the 15 won't have a Sim tray which means this will very likely be my last iPhone.

Guys, don't worry, I can buy an iPhone 14 Pro Max 1TB with Apple Care+ for you in Germany for 2348 Euro ($2348), ship it for like $150 (?)... And here you go - you get your new shiny iPhone with a tray for a physical SIM.

On a serious note: a terrible move by Apple, that no doubt android manufacturers will start following (and fail miserably with such offers at first).

Goodbye using new iPhones in the countries which simply do not offer eSims or hardly offer them. Goodbye prepaid cards and cheap travel SIM cards...

And the worst of all: pretty much goodbye privacy and welcome total control.

This is no good... I buy the unlocked iPhone so that can remove the SIM from old iPhone and install it in my new iPhone. This way I would avoid the upgrade fee from the carrier.

I wonder if the carrier would asses the upgrade fee when the eSIM is activated on new iphone.

All iPhones come with international warranty. I have never had any issue getting service for my iPhone in any of the countries I have been to. You can even add a US Apple Care+ plan to a non US iPhone. Just keep in mind that if you have it serviced in the US and it requires a replacement you'll be getting a US model.

You can just buy the Philippines version, albeit at much higher prices.
If you travel a lot in Asia, the Hong Kong version is the ideal version with 2 physical nano SIM support.
