Apple Reopening ~100 More Retail Stores in the U.S. This Week With Focus on Curbside Pickup and Storefront Service

Apple is planning to approximately 100 more retail stores in the United States this week in states that include California, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Texas, and more.

Apple first began reopening stores in the United States on May 11, and right around 25 stores have opened up at the current time. Many of the Apple Stores that will be reopening starting tomorrow will be limited to store pickups and repairs.

In the Bay Area where Apple is located, for example, stores that include Apple Burlingame, Apple Corte Madera, Apple Hillsdale, and Apple Union Square, the flagship San Francisco location, are reopening, but only for pickups and repairs.

Customers will not be allowed in the store, as local guidelines state that non-essential stores with a sidewalk storefront are only able to provide curbside pickup of orders at this time. Stores located in malls are not able to open up as of yet, so retail locations like Valley Fair will remain closed. In other areas, though, stores will be able to reopen for customers.

Apple in a statement to 9to5Mac said that it is committed to reopening its stores "in a very thoughtful manner."

This week we'll return to serving customers in many US locations. For customer safety and convenience, most stores will offer curbside or storefront service only, where we provide online order pick-up and Genius Bar appointments. Others will be open for walk-in customers and we encourage everyone to check their local store webpage for more information about hours at their preferred location. Customers can also visit apple.com for support by phone or chat.

We are committed to reopening our stores in a very thoughtful manner with the health and safety of our customers and teams as our top priority, and we look forward to seeing our customers again soon.

These store openings are in addition to the stores that reopened earlier this month. Apple has also opened 12 of its locations in Canada, and has reopened stores in South Korea, Australia, Austria, and Italy. Apple also plans to reopen stores in Japan and Sweden this week.

Once the new U.S. store openings are complete, Apple will have right around 130 stores operational in the country.

Unfortunately, many of the Apple store locations are either located inside a mall or in very busy downtown/heavy trafficked areas where neither have the capability to support curbside pickup easily. Possibly in the latter, they could have allowed some sort of line-up, but again, it may not have been worth it given the locations.

Best Buy on the other hand is located typically where the setup is a strip mall with huge parking lots and the ability to drive-up curbside to load a vehicle with that all-important 75" TV or major appliance purchase.

I’m guessing it’s also because it’s vastly harder to do this when you don’t have a “curb”. The vast majority of Apple stores are inside malls where cars can’t directly access unlike bestbuys, which have their own parking lots.

That NY store is upstate in Rochester where Phase 1 reopenings are permitted to begin this week.

The actual store hours still say closed, so curbside pick up and sales it is. I‘ll be surprised if any of the NYC stores reopen before the end of June. As of yesterday: NYC, Long Island and other populated regions still haven’t met the 7 point criteria the Governor has set up for that region to begin phase 1 reopening.

That could change at any time, so who knows?

Someone in a manager/lead position literally has to just type in their password to override the return date. There should be no issues of returning anything back to an Apple Store. Before the pandemic Apple Stores were already returning things that were bought months prior. Doesn't really matter.

Sadly most people don't care.. in my area since opening it has gotten extremely worse, but memorial day all those same sick people posting on facebook how they don't feel well were out in full force. Extremely disgusting to see.

Same issue here. All the Atlanta stores are reopening, but the Genius Bar scheduler does not indicate that any are available yet. I will probably hit up Apple chat to see what's up & when they think we can start to book appointments.

UPDATE: Just got off chat with Apple. They said they they cannot even access the Genius calendar in their system. My local store says they they are open tomorrow at 10AM, so I may go drop by before lunch to see if they will take a look at my iPad. My guess is that the schedule will open up late tonight or tomorrow.

COVID isn't going away until herd immunity or there is a vaccine. The opportunity to squash it using an aggressive federal approach (like New Zealand, South Korea, etc.) went away in early March when no action was taken, and now we have to live with it unfortunately. This all considered, you can't expect the country or the world to indefinitely shelter in place. The show must go on, albeit in a much different and hopefully safer way.
