yes, so that you can tap on a camera or face id cutout and still use DI
I meant like in a future update where you can have them on with then rest of the screen while dynamic island is not being used. So we get a bit of extra screen real estate when viewing content. It's not much but would be a nice feature.

If you check the tech specs for the new phones, the screen is around 20px taller to compensate for the slightly lower DI. The result is about the same amount of safe area under the DI as under the notch.

Yeah you're right - I compared 13 Pro to 14 Pro and sue enough the same amount of actual data is displayed. It just sort of feels pushed down more now you've got a bigger notch area.

It seems to me that, from a functional standpoint, Dynamic Island-like behavior could just as easily have been implemented with the traditional notch (although a smaller notch would have made it a bit easier).

Agree

I think Apple intentionally kept everyone in the dark on dynamic island, including hardware and support groups. Hardware is perennially leaked so it was critical that a new, hyped feature not be described or illustrated on any of the pictures or pre-production documents.

It also seems unlikely that one of the core interaction points of iOS was a “late addition”. Apple succeeded in keeping a secret, which is pretty impressive considering the size of their company and supply chain.
Agreed, I think this is the most likely answer, vs. they chose to use dynamic island last minute. You don't get such polished UI, and make it a key talking point in your keynote, from a last minute addition.

Just finished setting up my 14 Pro and i've got to say, after having the notch on the X, 11 Pro, 12 Pro and 13 Pro - this is the first one i've actually noticed. It's feels a bit obtrusive, it feels a bit low down compared to the notch (it is) so screen real estate is less...the content starts further down on the phone.

I'll get used to it but considering all the moans the notch never once bothered me in 4 years of using it - and this, initially has.
The notch is an icon, I love it

Almost every review I’ve seen has singled it out as the coolest and most innovative part of a mostly lackluster release….
Lack Lustre ? 😳 The new camera system is hardly lack lustre on top of everything else new on it, like the properly implemented and true always on display, 4k vastly improved Cinematic mode, the only thing missing on it is a 10x telephoto lens and a USB C (which majority of Apple users don't care about).....I would call that a substantial upgrade, even though I'm staying with my 13 pro

The Dynamic Island is a nice feature, but I think the best option is to remove it and have hole cut-outs to give the screen an overall cleaner look. I think Apple was thinking about the cutouts but wanted to differentiate itself from Samsung, which they were able to do perfectly with Dynamic Island. I do think they made the smart move by opting for one whole Dynamic Island, instead of 2 smaller Islands since there's just not much space between the Islands for the user to view anything. Ver smart move by Apple imo.

For those that have a 14, that graphic is very accurate. There is a pill and camera behind the scenes.

I suspect originally this i design was going to play into their marketing with iPhone being written on the screen in images to depict the i as the first letter.

But later on when they came up with the Dynamic Island (as a software UI thing) they realised it looks better when passive to have a pill shape and not two disjointed cutouts.

And this may be why some of their marketing imagery is using the earlier design but I'm just theorising.
This is pretty much precisely what I was thinking as well except I think it happened pretty early on in the creation process and had a team dedicated to it immediately after the idea came up

So originally it was supposed to be Australia and New Zealand islands.
But they must have thought that was too "down under".
So they merged them and came up with Dynamic Island. :p

“ It seems most likely that due to the siloed nature of Apple's internal structure, employees responsible for web design, developer resources, and support documents were unaware of the Dynamic Island until directly before the Apple event.”

That does seem the most likely reason. Obviously the dynamic island software wouldn’t be ready for anyone outside the team to use until pretty late in the dev cycle.
This is probably right

I wonder if those pieces are the 'true' black hardware elements and the remaining black is all UI? Which would make sense to see in a dev doc, to know what you're building around. I dunno. Mine is still in the mail 😭

My first though was that Dynamic Island was a late addition to the software.

My guess is it was developed in tandem, in secret, rather early on, but the decision to merge it into the main iOS 16 codebase came very late — probably largely to reduce the risk of leaks (which worked!), but perhaps also because they were wavering on whether they wanted to ship this with iOS 16 at all.

This late merge would explain some of the issues 16 is experiencing, such as the data transfer freeze, the 16.1 beta GPS bug, etc.: those were all largely developed on a different branch.
