A fairly standard practice actually. Hard to say if this is really what happened here though.

Do we know that's the case here? That there wasn't something actually better that should be there and just had some issues. Progress doesn't really work the way you describe it.

progress? ignoring the EPIC FAIL for the moment, whats new in the DNS front since like... al gore invented the internet? :D

jokes aside... this surely looks like someones pet project going bad.

And what information do we have to go by to support any of that (aside from something not working correctly there)?

that's called 'speculation'.

facts :

a) apple replaces good old mdnsresponder with brand new shiny discoveryd
b) discoveryd breaks lots of macs, some ppl reverted to mavericks mdnsresponder and reported that it fixed the problems
c) apple tried to fix the mess in 10.10.1 10.10.2 10.10.3 and some 10.10.4 betas. no workie
d) apple throws the towel and do what smart ones did in 10.10.0 - revert to the good old time-tried daemon.

also, DNS is something that has been around forever, and it's not exactly rocket science. what were they exactly trying to accomplish with discoveryd anyway?

The speculation seems to be around why Apple replaced one version with another--specifically that there was no good reason for it and Apple did it just because or for the "fun" of it. Perhaps there's something along those lines, but perhaps (if not more likely) there's quite a bit more to it. Just saying there wasn't any reason without anything actually supporting it, that's speculation.

Nobody at Apple has ever done anything for the "fun" of it. Suggesting as such = not understanding the company.

Thanks god this is happening! discoveryd has been using 100% of my CPU while it can.

The quick way to enable beta updates, if you want to skip that "Feedback Assistant" thingy and deploy it across your network:

sudo /usr/sbin/softwareupdate --set-catalog "https://swscan.apple.com/content/catalogs/others/index-10.10beta-10.10-10.9-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog.gz"; open macappstore://showUpdatesPage

Will this finally keep my Mac from counting up its device name? I'm currently at "MacBook Pro (16)" ...

So now that I have updated all my devices to 10.10.4 can I just rename them to get rid of the (16) and they will not keeping counting up?

Hopefully. But the counting up started with OS X 10.7 or 10.8 for me.

Hopefully the rumor that 10.11 is going to be another snow leopard is true. More bug fixes and performance enhancements can really make Yosemite a screamer.

I haven't updated my OS since the last 10.6 came out, because there are no compelling new features they've added, but there have been compelling new bugs to be avoided.

Have fun on 10.6. I tried using Snow Leopard and couldn't last more than 5 minutes before I started missing key features from newer versions of OS X. You may think the new features aren't a big deal, but when you have to use a Mac without them it all of a sudden becomes a VERY big deal.

In other good news: the team that brought you 'discoveryd' will now focus its efforts on improving the graphics drivers in OS X. They will also work on a version of QuickTime that supports the file formats that people have actually been using in the real world for the last five years. If they have any time left, they will try to improve the iTunes UI.

But the corker is that the team may actually start adding breakthrough features to the Photos app, with rumours of a major new feature that will allow people to sort their photos by date in either ascending or descending order!

Yes folks, only Apple can add features like that as an improvement to an app that is supposed to help you organise your pictures.

Just like only Apple forces you to upgrade your OS to keep using the latest features in Apple apps.

Whats your source?

Yes, software quality at Apple is severely lacking these days.

Severely is quite a bit of an overstatement, but it has been somewhat worse recently in a number of cases and certainly can and really should be better.

Maybe I will be able to change my signature soon.

If this fixes the Wi-Fi issues, I'll be very happy. However, it's already been 9 damn months. This should have been adressed and fixed within the first 3 months. Plus, I wouldn't be surprised if AirDrop stops working, which has been working fine now.

gplv3 would be a compelling reason indeed, if mdnsresponder used v2 and was 'upgraded' to v3 (those bastards... heh). but I think it uses an apache license, so no.

But mDNSResponder is Apple's project so presumably they could license it however they wish. In any case, it is currently under the Apache license.

My iMac (delivered with Yosemite) is wired to my network, wifi is turned off, and after sleep it takes many seconds to reconnect to the net. I try to tell myself that there's a benefit in knowing when the iMac went to sleep (because that's the time shown in the screen until the web connection is re-established).

So, although N=1, it's not just wifi-related.
