Apple replacing my G5 with a free Mac Pro, but which one?

Without going into tedious detail, after a literal slew of problems with my G5 (dual 2.5) over the past few years that have totaled weeks of down time, my Apple dealer has agreed that I must have gotten a G5 that was cursed. He's agreed to replace my G5 with a MacPro.

I didn't speak directly to the Service Manager, but he was available on the phone with the technician. The tech told me they couldn't just give me a MacPro from the store, for some reason they had to put in a replacement request through Apple and Apple would send the MacPro to the store and they'd call me to pick it up in 7 to 10 days.

So the question is: which mac pro will I get?

The tech said that it would be up to Apple what they'd replace my G5 dual 2.5 with and he had no way of knowing what they will send.

My thought is that they'd just send the "standard" model that is featured at the online store and in the Apple stores, but that's just a guess. There's a BTO lower-end model MacPro that only has four cores, they could certainly send that.

Or they could send me an old 2007 refurb laying around in the basement at Cupertino for all I know.

    What will it be?!?!?!? Speculation?

I reckon it will be a standard 2.8 Ghz 8-core machine.

They may throw in some extra ram like they sometimes do with refurbs.

How would the four core compare?

How would the eight core (or the four core, lowest end one), with the standard video card compare to a dual 2.5 g5 with the 6800 ultra ddl video card?

I personally wouldn't even bother with 4-core. it seems to me like resale value would suck and 8 cores is way more sexy. ; )

I agree with you, but like I mentioned in my original post, it's not up to me. They're sending me whatever they want to send me.

I think they'll be sending you a 4 core early 2008 Mac Pro.

I also think there is a good chance it will be a 4 core model.

I was kinda hoping that there would be others posting who had the same experience and could say what they received. I guess ultimately one never knows what Apple will throw into the box. Whatever it turns out to be, I'm sure it will be a step up from the G5 and I"ll be happy to get it.

I think it will be the 8 core it only makes sense because if you tell someone it's going to sound good when apple updated you to the 8 Core.

I think it will depend on where on the scale his G5 was when it was brand new. If he bought the "best" model (before the quad core G5s arrived), he will likely get the "best" currrent model. If his 2.5 dual core was the cheapest model at its time, he will get the cheapest current model (but I think dual 2.5 GHz was never the cheapest available, right? )

Yeah that's what I mean his G5 was pretty expensive when it came out either way it will be quite the Upgrade.

It was the top of the line when I bought it.

I bought it when it was the top of the line. i also bought a 30" ACD and 6800 Ultra DDL card at the same time. The total for the system when I bought it was well over $7,000. And I bought AppleCare.

In that case, I would expect at least the base model. But if you do end up getting the 4core, there isn't much you can do to get a better one without sounding like an ass.

Agreed - the 4-core will still spank the dual G5 2.5 you had. What was the saying "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" <---whatever that is supposed to mean ;) You win regardless of the 4 core or 8 core - you may have an argument with a refurb box though - still gets you on intel...

Actually, I think that the most common way of evaluating a horse's overall health was by checking the condition of its teeth and mouth. (Maybe the teeth were the best way to tell its age?) The adage means, I believe, that one shouldn't be critical and overtly assess the worth of a horse that had just be given to them.

In any event, I'll be on pins and needles until I find out what's on its way to me.

I worked at a sign shop that had a bunk G4 tower, i teched it out & got it down to a motherboard problem, called & found out the applecare had 2 weeks left on it.
Got it to the apple store, they replaced the logic board twice & it still froze. Bottom line after 2 boards it was declared a lemon & they sent a dual 2Ghz
machine, the replaced machine was a bottom line machine & they replaced it with a same level machine.
I would expect them to replace yours with a 3.0 or 3.2 ghz MacPro as it is the same "Level" machine.
Cross em if you got em.

    Well, I got it....

In case anyone is still following this thread, even though the replacement was supposed to take 7 to 10 days, my local Apple store called me today and said that they were going to take care of it at the store level.

They gave me the standard, dual quad-core system with 2 gigs of RAM and a 320 gig hard drive. I picked it up this afternoon and it's up and running now.

    This is pretty sweet.

A hearty cheer for Apple in keeping a diehard Apple fan even more satisfied.

    Congratulations!
Pity you had so many problems with the G5 though, but still a very nice upgrade. :D

This machine is great! Like someone said, it totally spanks my G5 and I thought the G5 was a screamer in its day.

It was so very cool of Apple to replace the G5 like they did. Many other companies today wouldn't go to that level.
