“Skewed against white males” is the most remarkable part of your rant. And speaks volumes more than this web of nonsense spun. Anyone who think that white males are some how oppressed needs to give their head a shake. Well done on missing the entire point of my post.
It is possible I missed the point of your post. We both need to lay down any hostilities based on misunderstandings and properly communicate. I’m open to trying to understand you.
And I’m not ranting. I do apologize if my writing came across that way. I was surprised at your assumptions of me, so I was giving some backstory to explain a bit of who I am, my experiences and my perspectives that brought me to the views I have today.
Meanwhile I still know nothing at all about you other than you are apparently angry at me for not seeing things exactly the same way as you. How can I possibly come to an understanding of your points if I don’t understand your perspective? And if you seem more intent on attacking me and my point of view without explaining where precisely your disagreements lie.
I just have to throw things against the wall and hope something sticks that addresses what you’re getting at. Which is hard because I don’t quite know what you think I’m advocating. Or even what you’re advocating.
And I wouldn’t dismiss you out of hand the way you have done to me. I gave the thumbs up to your post on another topic yesterday because I thought it was well stated and I credit you with intelligence. Compassion and patience, eh, not so much though. Maybe I’m inadvertently pushing your buttons. Again, if so, I offer my apologies but I literally know no common ground on which we can meet, yet.
I can tell you what I think I’m advocating: a society that provides fair and open opportunities for all who desire to work to make the most of them.
For people who can’t work, who through no fault of their own have a very limited set of options, I want a compassionate society that helps look after their needs with dignity and helps them fulfill their potential.
In none of this do I want gender, race, religion (or other arbitrary labels we are born under or choose) to be divisive factors that hold any of us back from finding fulfillment in life. Or from offering each other understanding and help.
I do not think white males are oppressed in general at all. That would be absurd, considering events in the history of this country all the way to current events. I quite directly said I have been victimized myself by some males and many of them have indeed been white.
But I recognize they didn’t give me trouble because they were white men. They gave me trouble because they are terrible human beings. If they had been born green with purple hair and no gender at all, they still would find some way of making other people uncomfortable and exploited because they are nasty.
I do not judge people on their skin color or their gender, but by the content of their character as demonstrated in their choices and actions.
While I acknowledge that white males in general have enjoyed a more privileged status in US culture, I think it would be folly to ignore the fact that it’s possible to set up situations and environments that inflict oppression or hostility to any one person or group, and that can include white males. But it can just as easily include Hispanic males or Inuit females. That’s because oppression and exploitation is a crime of opportunity.
We always need to be careful when trying to right wrongs in our society that we don’t inadvertently create environments of opportunity for anyone else to be abused or dismissed. Our politics favor quick fixes when more measured action and long range planning is often called for.
I want to see nobody left behind. Except the people who just want to sit back and expect everything to fall into their laps. And people like that are found in every possible permutation of human existence. They are opportunitists who are adept at exploiting the people around them regardless of what socioeconomic environment they’re in.
