If I want a small phone, I would pay 100 more and go with the 12 mini.
Except, there’s one striking difference that you’re missing from your post, there are those who want touch ID -v.s.-the 12 Mini offers face ID. I know a variety of people on this very website who are not interested in face ID, therefore it puts them in a segment of an entry-level phone that still uses touch ID. That’s the benefit for the iPhone SE 3 for that niche demographic offered in a cheaper price point.

Uh oh, I think Apple has stretched this design too much now. Also there seriously needs to be a larger version of it, there is a clear gap in the iPhone line-up for a big screen, affordable phone. And currently the competition is taking this market in droves.

So change up the design and offer a second larger version, print money.

Really not enough to warrant getting it over the SE gen 2 at this stage. 5G coverage is still quite limited, battery life bump is nice but not huge, and the SE2 will be widely available for a discount while the new one has stepped up slightly. Why pay potentially $60 more for a phone with little new to offer? Maybe a year or so down the line when the SE2 becomes harder to get your hands on and maybe 5G finally reaches critical mass this will see more success.

I’m sure Apple would love to only sell the iPhone Pro Max 1TB.
I don’t know what that would prove. Just because they ‘sell something’, doesn’t mean that consumers are buying it. Not to mention, very few consumers would ever need one TB of storage. That’s just an insane amount of storage for a smart phone.

I think Apple will run this design to the ground. With Apple using the A15 on the 2022SE, we probably won't see another refresh for at least another 2 years. And unless there's a significant redesign with the flagship model, we might see Apple using the same design again. Apple wants to clearly segment their customers.

Strong rumors we’ll be getting a bigger SE in a XR body next year. ?

I get the whole "I just need a smaller iPhone" crowd, but I think it's foolish on Apple to count on that small audience without at least having a design refresh. Totally expected
It's not just that.

This time it's not just "last generation's iPhone" with the latest Soc. It's a very conservatively upgraded version of the 2nd Gen SE.

If most of the "SE crowd" upgraded to the 2nd Gen SE or a 12 mini in 2020, then how are you going to sell them on what looks and feels like yet another 2nd Gen SE?

SE 2022 is too little, too soon.

It probably wouldn't have made a major difference for sales. But the fact that Apple didn't even do three new colour options is beyond me. That would have been an easy way to let consumers feel they are getting something new or different at the very least.

The added $30 dollars was also completely out of line -Being able to get a brand new iPhone, with the fastest SoC around, for less than $400 just packed a punch. $429 is not a very marketable price point.

The iPhone SE is not a small phone
Sure it is. What other devices are you referencing that would be smaller than a 4.7 inch display currently offered? It’s one of the smallest smart phones even offered in this pricing segment, when everything else has graduated to 5.5 displays and above.

Agreed. Apple should’ve done this:
Use iPhone 12 mini design & case,
Use 1 camera,
Use lcd not OLED,
Touch ID on sleep/wake/power button.

What would’ve been good is to have seen

* the current SE have a bigger price cut

and/or

* as many have said, a design like the XR/11 with 5g and Touch ID on the side button.

If the SE is meant for more conservative customers, I doubt they would’ve been especially interested in the 5g upgrade.

I suspect that for those people, the 2020 SE still performs brilliantly in 2022.

So a price cut to that model would’ve been more welcome. 4g isn’t going away anytime soon.

Wrong, the dimensions of the device are what make a phone small not the screen size. The SE 2nd & 3rd gen are closer in size to the standard 12/13 than the mini.
