I still think the 5.5 inch iPhone was nothing more than a prototype.

I believe that the 5.5 iPhone is a real device, and that Apple is legitimately having some production issues with it. Just like the iWatch, which has been rumored for quite a while now, Apple wants to get the design kinks worked out before a release. Apple does not mind waiting until they get it right before they release a new product with improved features.

Well, I'm glad that a lot of you are happy with 1 day battery life with your phone. I'm very unimpressed with battery life in smartphones generally, its pretty poor to be honest.

Yes, functionality can be turned off to get more battery life, but thats not my point - my point is "Improve Battery Life - either more software optimization or bigger batteries - which may mean, slightly thicker phones!!

We've all seen lists of things to turn off etc - happens with every smartphone out there...

This sounds more like whining than "a very valid complaint."

Just turn off the stuff you don't use. Only takes 2 minutes and there's no reason not to really. Here's a few things you can try:

Turn your smartphone into a dumb phone. :)

Who said it was innovation? That doesn't mean it isn't useful.

Having a laptop that does not have replaceable battery or RAM, in my book, is not useful. I'd rather have the extra thickness. Thank you :) But Apple cater for the lowest common dominator these days :-(

I agree!

A product that hasn't been announced nor has it had a release date announced has been delayed? Interesting...

What do u call the iPad 3. They had the ipad 2 design and made it just a little thicker to accommodate engineering

It was also the quickest version replaced. One of the complaints was the weight.

I think only releasing the 4.7" this year would hurt Apple. Going from a 4" screen to just 4.7" is hardly any difference. Looks like just an extra row and column for apps.

I really would of hoped that by Christmas they would have the "phablet" size iPhone for sale. I would really like a phone as big as the Galaxy Note 3.

Still have my iPhone 5 since Touch ID did not sell me to buy the 5S.

Also  why push back the release because you want a thinner battery. Is Apple's aim to create a battery so thin it's virtually invisible and ends up lasting 2 hours on a single charge?

Also all in favour of thin phones here, but once you need to walk around carrying an extra - external - battery, or need to hop from coffeeshop to coffeeshop, hoping for a free power socket, something went wrong... The iPhone is advertised as a do-all device (which it effectively is), but it just starts lacking the power to run all these wonderful applications. True, maybe not for very light users who don't install extra apps, but if you're e.g. on a city trip abroad, using a dictionary app, maps, the camera, reading some museum brochures you downloaded, ... it won't last a day - by far not. And then you wonder if you should include the thickness of the extra battery you're carrying to the actual size of the phone. Or if maybe making the phone a few millimeters thicker would make sense.

For all those people who say the phone is already thin enough: pick up an iPod Touch and tell me you don't think the 5/5S felt like a brick afterwards.

I haven't held a ipod touch in awhile but I have seen them and they are thin. The issue though is that the iphone has additional cellular capabilities which create a significant power drain over the ipod touch which only had wifi and bluetooth. I assume that is why the ipod touch and the iphone do not share the same exterior body style with when it came to the iphone 4/4S/5/5S.

I have no problem with it going thinner based on some of the mockups we have seen online but I would prefer having a bigger, longer lasting battery with the phones thickness remaining the same as the iphone 5. The iphone 5/5S is only 7.6 mm thick. provide the same phone with the styling of the mockups but with about the same 7-7.6 mm thickness and we should be good.

One of the reasons I have an S3 is because I could stick a massive 7000mah battery into it.

However, I use it HEAVY daily with no Wifi (grandfathered into VW's unlimited data), and from 7am-11pm, I may be around 60% battery left. I browse the net throughout the day, check fb, twitter, etc, and do a couple hours of XM app streaming.

I am very tempted by the S5 (I love having a replaceable battery), but I will try hard to hold out for when the next iphone comes out, but the battery issue is still the #1 priority for me. Thin is nice, but too thin = small battery = me pissed that I have to worry about battery.

I don't care how thin it is. Honestly, it makes it awkward to hold when it's too thin.

Agreed. The 3GS had the perfect shape for holding, especially with the rounded edges. (though not material, that plastic was slippery) I used to always have a rubber case on my phones for easy gripping, but no one seems to make a rubber case for the 5/5s series that doesn't look like you plan to drop it out of an airplane. I'm always on the verge of dropping my 5s; I have long fingers and it's very awkward to hold. Maybe Jony Ive has stumps for hands, I don't know.

It was also the quickest version replaced. One of the complaints was the weight.

Ya i remember, they replaced it with the slimmer iPad 4 which has been on the market longer then any other iPad besides the iPad 2. I also forgot that the iPad mini retina was never made a little thicker.

Seems like they could have just released the larger, thicker iPhone and released the slimmer version the following year.

Looks like I'll be getting the 4.7" version, and wait for a couple more years for the "iPhone Blade", simply because iPhone Air doesn't cut it for me... :D

There is a limited number of people willing to stuff their pockets with a cell phone. The big cell phone fad is already on the downward side of the slope.

No it is more a question of gullibility and misplaced priorities that drove you to it.

Until you realize that carrying a brick around with you has changed your life and not for the better.

Not sure if having tight fitting jeans with small pockets makes you qualified in knowing what people can or cannot fit into their pockets. I’ve had the Note 2 and Note 3 for almost 2 years now with both devices being over 5.5”. I love big screen “bricks” as you call them. I don’t like small phones but I won’t bash them because people do have preferences. It’s their business not mine. And I will take my business elsewhere if company abc does not have a device that suits my needs.

My fingers aren't getting smaller

Well, except for the people using all that thin tech . . .

Unfortunately we always have to interface to people. :)
At least transistors/FETs are getting smaller, batteries gaining more capacity, materials getting stronger. I like less bezel although, thinner isn't necessarily better for handling. I suppose we will see what happens. One could always put their phone in a case anyways... like lots do... that will make it thicker or easier to handle.
I'd maybe like to see a uniform size so that you phone can also mount in your vehicle as an infotainment system. Like the head to your stereo system.

Displays take the majority of the power, then radio. I wonder if there will be improvements in the display power requirements.

Rumour has it that the battery will have more capacity... a jump from 1560mAH to 1700mAH. It is more but marginal... you might not even notice the difference depending on your usage.

If Apple makes an iPhone with 1 week battery life, it will sell billions, I guarantee it :D
