They have a whole lifetime ahead of them to become a zombie. Why rush into it?
What if something happens on the way to school, at school? What if there’s a shooting at their school etc etc etc. you’d wish you could get ahold of your kid and vise versa. There are lots of ways of controlling your kids consumption while enabling vital communication.

Apple likes the environment only when it can use it as an excuse to remove stuff from the boxes (headphones, power adaptors). Otherwise it cares about it less than zero and it’s happy to make plastic stuff which is demonstrably not 100% recyclable like aluminium.
Totally. It gets covered every time this comes up. If Apple were actually committed to the environment they’d make phones that last for at least five years and have swappable batteries. They try to mitigate the waste by recycling trade in phones, but simply making them more durable and long lasting would have by far the bigger impact.

I can’t imagine that Apple would be interested in switching to plastic when they’re working so hard to be much more environmentally sustainable company
Pretty sure any random lunch takeout order has as much plastic involved as a plastic-cased Apple Watch would.

They’re shifting it to compete with Fitbit and Garmin and the other fitness trackers. They’ve abandoned any attempt to compete with Seiko, Citizen, Casio, SWATCH etc.

Plastic is also absorbent and yellows (if it's white)... enjoy your yellowy perma sweat-smelling watches I guess 😣 😷

Plastic is appropriate for some applications. But wrist watches are pretty marginal for the exact reason you mention. Plastic ages, especially when it’s constantly against skin. Stainless steel doesn’t. That’s why most nice wrist watches are made out of stainless.
