To me, I’ll probably skip the ‘14’, (As it’s likely an ‘S’ year) and hold out for this feature, as the Periscope lens alone is worth the upgrade to have this advantage. Everything is lining up for this to be the big debut in 2023.
I would love to wait until then but I’m still using an iPhone X that has camera issues. I’m planning on getting the 14.

The 14 is the design change. The 15 is the S year.

At this point I’d take a phone with a decent camera without a bump and carry a nice camera separately.

Said another way: will the 14 come with a phone?

13 was the "S" year... 14 will still have the same design, except where the Pros will have a new notch, but other than that, seems like the 3 year cycle is still going.

iPhone 15 should have all new body design.

Personally I'd rather they focussed efforts on reducing lense flare which I've found to be atrocious on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. For me it's basically impossible to take a picture of a sunset without ghost lighting appearing. Also unusable for taking pictures or videos at my son's school events as they have candle-style bulbs in all the light fixtures which causes the same problem. One of the other parents has a Pixel phone which does not suffer at all so I end up having to ask them to share pix. I never saw the issue with my iPhone 11 Pro Max, despite taking pictures in exactly the same environments.

I contacted Apple support, as it seems especially bad on my phone, and they pushed back saying 'it's normal'.

I seem to remember there being a flare-removing capability in the iOS 15 betas which evidently didn't make the cut.

Which would only come with a higher price tag. I get what you’re saying, but there needs to be a separation of features for each phone model with certain price tags.
Of course, I’m just dreaming lol. I don’t even know if all that tech could physically fit in an SE without taking half the battery out. But if it were possible, I would pay flagship prices. I really like small phones.

Good.
It seems this years IPhone has not killer features, unless you call the notch evolution on the “pros” a killer feature.
Even the in-pro will have the same CPU as iPhone 13!.
Sadly I have a yearly update plan and I have to change my 13Pro but if the rumors at half the life of the 13 can work as a far away reference, the hardware innovation is stuck at Apple.
At least make IOS be useful as before!! (Up next widget, editable numbers in the dial pad!!, the old do not disturb, and well, many other features lost in the way of de-evolution for no benefit).

Come now, where is our glorious graphic, MR? ?

The 14 is probably gonna be the first where 5G doesn't burn too much battery.

We will see.

I really miss the ol’ “S vs. non-S” yearly arguments.

S year for the win. ?

I really hope so. It’s too bad the mini is dead (according to all rumors).

Maybe Elon will follow through with creating a normal sized phone. And maybe buy Apple while I’m dreaming.

what exactly can a periscope lens do? and is it really worth it to hold out until late 2023/early 2024 for the iphone 15.

It’s a folded zoom, like the periscope of a submarine, that ia how it can offer zoom functionality in a slender phone body. Many people will find it a reason to upgrade.

What use cases are you suggesting? The distanced zoom is a massive advantage for for those that want a higher clarity photo of areas that they wouldn’t be able to obtain up close otherwise.

‘Investment’ aside from what? That makes no sense. Please elaborate.
Well, you know how instead of adding a separate macro lens to the iPhone, they decided to incorporate that feature into the ultra-wide lens? I don't know how they could do something similar with a dedicated periscope zoom lens. Maybe using the data to help the "portrait" mode get better edge detection? ?‍♂️

Regarding the investment, I mean the time and money they invest in that niche feature, and how once introduced, it will inevitably be used to justify a high price for the phone. My point is that they could invest that money somewhere where the resulting feature is more universally useful.

With a periscope lens, you can put a bigger sensor (Pixel 6 Pro or example) or have a longer focal range (S22 Ultra for example) in the smartphone since it doesn't depend that much of the thickness of the phone. The fact is that, the longer is your focal range, the thicker are all the optics and that helps to converge the light properly to the sensor.
Well, in short, you'll have a better zoom capabilities.

And if Apple didn't put that for years now is because of industrial constraints. I believe they didn't have a proper patent for that (Samsung holds most of them) and they didn't want to pay the full price so they simply didn't implement that. Moreover, I think there's also the fact that they want to make small steps by steps in order to make each iPhone better. If they put bigger sensors for all of their cameras, people won't see any hardware upgrades and won't buy them.
And lastly, there's also the fact that Apple need a really strong chain supplies since they order millions of them and these periscope lens are not that easy to make.
