As a Fancy partner I noticed earlier today that Tim Cook has a verified account that's friends with some of the staff at the fancy.

Didn't think anything of it until now...

His account is private.

Don't get why Apple would buy this company. Looks like just another eShopping site to me, albeit with some very nice and expensive products. Can't be that hard to embed Facebook links.

I went on to The Fancy website and starting scrolling through the products on the home page. OMG this page goes on forever and ever. It must be the longest continuous single page on the web.

Well, I suppose before one goes on a rant about people who don't "get" social media the ranter should understand what "social media" is, no?

Social media is not everything on the web. It's typically Web 2.0 sites which are known for there interactive and collaborative nature, and most importantly, to give the poster a reward - a like, a follower, a mayor of, etc.

Forums, like this one, do not fall into that category. They have been around in some form since before the Web or even the dial-up services (CompuServe, AOL) before the web. Maybe the term BBS rings a bell, maybe not.

Also there is a difference, I think, between, posting ideas on forums and posting personal details and "checking in". I don't feel the need to know where my friends are every moment of the day or to get a alert every time they post a blase picture, or they have some obtuse thought they must share with all their followers. That is the heart of social, not mere commenting.

Next to not "getting" social media, I don't get people, like you, who get upset by people who don't fully appreciate their hobbies. By your comment you appear to be an avid fan of the social. Hey, I have no problem with that. All my nieces and nephews in college and HS are on FB b/c it's needed for an actual social life with flesh and blood people, not avatars. I get that. It's not for me. I never said it's not for everyone - that is why I said I don't get it, as in, maybe I'm the wrong person to analyze Apple getting deeper into social.

I don't use social media very much myself actually. Although I have started using twitter recently to keep up with what is going on in the design industry and it works very well for that. And I have gotten some good jobs through LinkedIn in the past. You know, stuff us adults do. ;)

I'm just pointing out the obvious hypocrisy of people who claim that if you use social media to keep up with your interests/hobbies/friends/etc. that you must have a bunch of time on your hands, no job, young, etc.

All ridiculous assumptions seeing that the exact same assumption can be made about you by the very fact that you are posting on public forums.

Forums have existed for a long time but they really aren't that much different. You're still posting to the public web to complete strangers, you can follow people, posts, and topics on the site, receive notifications to your email that bring you back, you can send direct messages to a particular member, etc. Old Social same as New Social pretty much on a fundamental level.

The only real major difference between the "old" social media like forums and the new social media like Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, and Google Plus is that with new social people use their real names and identities rather than anonymous usernames, handles, and pseudo-names.

And when it really boils down to it, that is the real sticking point that some people have with it even if they don't realize it or want to admit it. Some people are just terrified of people seeing who they really are and being held accountable for their words and actions. And they can't play tough guy behind their keyboards either like they did in the "good old days". Others just don't like who they are and want to play someone else behind their anonymous names.

Sounds like a less mature and more insecure demographic for old social media compared to new social media to me. :p

I'm sure there are lots of people who really don't have time for social media and don't understand why people "waste their time" posting stuff on the web and following and reading other posts by complete strangers but then again those people obviously don't post on forums like macrumors for the exact same reasons. ;)

...And I have gotten some good jobs through LinkedIn in the past.

You got something of value from LinkedIn?!?
I'm a 50 year old career IT manager, you know the demographic you'd think LinkedIn was made for, and I got nothing. After 4 months of posts from other IT managers looking for work, and posts FROM LinkedIn about how important LinkedIn was I dumped the account. Maybe I don't understand how it's supposed to function but I got absolutely nothing of value in any way shape or form from LinkedIn. I filled out the profile. I joined the relevant groups. I did all the things that LinkedIn and other sources said I needed to do to use LinkedIn to help me find a job and got nothing.

For me LinkedIn was just a pointless, useless, wasteful, time-suck.

OK, but I wasn't making that argument. You should hone your reading skills. Again, I made the statement as a clarification that since I don't understand the interest in things like FB and Pinterest I may not be the best analyst of the rumor Apple is interested in getting deeper into it. You are being a tad sensitive I think.
