I would imagine that a lot of people feel this way about MacRumors. When you look at a popular site like Pinterest and say "Why would anyone want to pin recipes and clothes onto a virtual board?", there are plenty of others who would look at MacRumors and say "Why would anyone want to read about the front panel glass specifications on an unreleased Apple device?

don't be ridiculous. they aren't even comparable.

Macrumors is a NEWS site with a discussion forum.

Pinterest is a scrapbook of things random users like. it's not cohesive. it doesnt have a common theme. it doesn't have an editorial voice. it's no different than just collecting a random assortment of blogs and throwing them together.

Apple - just stop already. You don't do social. You don't need to either. Stick to what you know. Hardware and great OSes.
I unfortunately agree. Hey, in another 2 years they can pick up Facebook for pocket change at the rate their stock is crashing.

If Apple really must buy this thing, let's at least hope they have the decency to change the name.

I can't even begin to imagine myself "fancying" anything for anyone.

Nonetheless, props to Tim Cook for displaying his true colors.

I take back my post of a few moments ago. I Pintrest and Fancy both a new iMac AND a Mac Pro that has something newer than 3 year old technology.

There.

Another buzz kill

Apple drops iWeb then eyes Pinterest? Yuck! I'm losing interest in Apple more every day. Now it's about phones and buying. Now I'm eyeing other products because Apple isn't committed to its own products; losing iWeb broke the camel's back. What's next? Pages, iPhoto, OSX, Mac? Hello Dropbox, Chrome, Wordpress, and Word (gag).

Hey, in another 2 years they can pick up Facebook for pocket change at the rate their stock is crashing.

First, it's more like 2 months. Second, never EVER buy a stock on the decline unless you have good information that it will turn around. Third - show me ANY social media company that has made a single nickel in profit other than a buyout or a malignant IPO.

Can't tell if serious..

Really?

Open your eyes.

But I could not care less. As a long-term stockholder (6000+ shares at an average of $14/share), my interest lies strictly in the financial dealings and decisions the company makes. Cook is a cutthroat, weasely, ruthless numbers and logistics man with an unsurpassed track record of seeing the future better than the best Ouji board or Magic 8-Ball. Awesome decision-maker; enjoys a unique position in global history as a CEO with more money at his disposal than he could possibly spend AND a realist who is willing to give back to the world.

All I know is that when AAPL hits $800 per, I am out, I am gone, I am unplugging my phone and internet service, I am walking out the door, I am moving to Belize or Costa Rica with a suitcase full of cash and I am not looking back. And, I'll drop Tim a thank-you card in the mail, just like I did for Steve about 4 months before he died (got a nice reply back by the way).

Wow. It's like the Facebook of Materialism.

I hope Apple gets a good price.

Oh, so you're whining because Apple isn't committed to a free app that very few people ever used?

Wow. First World Problems.

Pinterest is a complete waste - doubt it even exists five years from now.

TheFancy is just a home shopping channel in HD.

Would be *very* surprised if there was anything to this rumor.

A complete waste? What a stupid, irrational generalization.

Seems all Apple wants to do nowadays is buy competitors rather than innovate their own ideas.

Pinterest vs Fancy

Pinterest is pretty cool actually, a nice interface and a great source of inspiration. People spend hours browsing through pictures that other people have selected as Interesting. Maybe a waste of time but it seems to be enjoyable and addictive.

I just signed up to have a look at Fancy and nearly the first thing it asks is are you a business wanting to sell stuff!!! Then as you start paging through pictures you soon find that almost everything you click on rather than telling you who posted it or where it was posted from tells you how much it costs and asks you if you want to buy it!!

It's awful!!

Seriously go try it!

As a pro photographer I thought Pinterest was just another pointless Tumblr load of trash. Then I used it and it's brilliant for making mood boards and bookmarking ideas.

Never heard of the Fancy.

Pinterest is just another social fad and like Digg, Friendster, et al will be gone as soon as the next hip thing appears. The one thing keeping Facebook relevant is that it has it's tendrils in everything. Pinterest doesn't and The Fancy is the same.

If Apple buys in it will be just another Ping. Especially if it's behind the walled garden of Apple products. Being everywhere and something to everyone is the only way to keep a social tool relevant.

I for one have no interest in joining another online "club" when the majority of people I know barely keep their Facebook profile up to date.

None of the companies you mentioned were fads. They were all beaten out by competitors who provided better services. Friendster is worse than facebook and tumblr and digg is worse than reddit. The fancy could be successful. Many of these "social fads" are doing great (facebook, Tumblr, Twitter)

Why?... And I though Tim said they aren't mindlessly spending their cash.

For the past half decade Apple has had a strategy of small acquisitions like this one to bolster its different markets. They bought mapping companies for maps, a voice control company for dictation/siri, and apple buys security firms for better osx security. These are all tiny acquisitions for less than a billion. Considering the cash apple has stockpiled they aren't mindlessly spending their cash but rather strategically spending very small amounts of minor acquisitions.

Yay! More ways to tell people you don't like about stuff you don't need!

How long before Apple completes their effort to become Google and launches a search engine?

Don't know about The Fancy but Pinterest is nice. I really don't see how people could have problems with it, it's pretty inoffensive. A lot of artists on there.

Pinterest got money from Rakuten recently, they dont need Apple's investment:

http://techcrunch.com/2012/05/17/ra...est-users-to-pin-images-and-buy-using-our-id/

Rakuten is a leading e-commerce site in Japan, similar to Amazon. Purchase makes sense.

Thefancy on the other hand looks like a cheap copy of pinterest, I hope Apple doesn't invest. Pinterest attracts a wider base, especially women.

In general, how does this fit into Apple's business? Suppose I like / fancy Samsung/Android smartphones, would I even be allowed to do that? What if Android wins the top spots ? Would Apple censor results ?

Purchasing pinterest or thefancy makes sense for an Amazon or Ebay, not for a company like Apple in my view.

It would make more sense than buying this company. I dont see why they want to have their fingers in this or social networks. How many have made it then stayed relavent apart from fb/twitter, even those companies are not making that much money in relative terms.

It doesn't hurt to keep trying. See what happened to Microsoft and Nokia when they "stuck to what they know".
