Digitimes as the source combined with the lead time of the rumour makes it suspect enough though. On the other hand this screen has been a persistent rumour from numerous sources, so the screen itself is most likely coming.

The real TV pops up every few months and it hasn't happened despite numerous sources saying it is coming.

New iPhone in May is ridiculous, at least let people have the 5S for a year before it becomes "out of date".

A new replacement is; this will be an add on to the current lineup, makes perfect sense for those of us that have been holding out for a bigger phone. Apple knows they are losing sales based on this. The SG5 in Jan-Feb is also good reason for Apple to get this out sooner. I'm tired of waiting and will buy a windows or android phone in the spring.

I think Apple will also release the iPad pro and iPad ProMini. Both will have keyboards. This will be aimed at business and schools. I think they seen the potential of the surface. If the surface had a 4:3 screen, weighed less it would have sold like hot cakes.

I honestly don't see the merit of a larger iPad in the education context. Pupils, having smaller hands compared to adults, would benefit from smaller tablets, not larger ones. If you want to project your iPad to a screen on the wall, why not simply use airplay and an Apple Tv? If I am going to add a keyboard, may as well get a Surface.

It would crush sales of the 15" rMBP. The average consumer doesn't care about clock speed, they care about screen-size, shininess, and they liked their iPhone so will definitely like Macs – right?

They'll see a thinner (thus 'better' in their eyes) 15" laptop for $1200, or a chunky 15" laptop for $2000. They will buy the $1250 almost every time, and use the saved cash for...well, another one?

The professional user, of course, provides a very different scenario.

Yeah, well, see what they've done with the iPhone 5C. They could make a 15" macbook air for 200$ less than the macbook pro retina and still have the same profit.

Why not? I see such comments all the time and frankly I don't get it. A larger screened iPad is exactly what many of us want. Further a larger screen and more RAM would enable an array of apps that the current machines can't support. Screen size does matter when it comes to apps!

My only concern would be final weight.

Well go ahead with the larger iPad, just don't replace the MBA with it.

I don't doubt that Apple is experimenting with an Ultrabook/tablet hybrid since seeing those Surface like keyboard patents, but I feel it would be a big blunder. iPads are for media consumption and web browsing, not real work. Typing long emails and documents is already a pain when having to drag your fat clumsy fingers between letters to correct errors, but it will be unbarable when stretching your arm at such a distance which will lower your accuracy significantly. A mouse cursor would most likely be needed, as well as a file system, which would instantly defeat the purpose of an iPad.

Also, the iphone 6 release date seems highly unlikely. WWDC in June always shows off the latest version of iOS which ships with the latest iPhones, and so far no parts have been leaked.

I still think this 12.9" device IS the new MacBook Air!

The max would be an Hybrid Air one with Ios8-A8 (Quad) and Syrah-Broadwell ^^.
There's another idea i have since i saw that bending display patents around,
what if the 12 inch Ipad Pro would be a bendable one?
While totally open in Landscape you could use it as horizontal A4 ( for example to read-edit two pages side by side )
While in Laptop mode (" Portrait ") you could use the lower side as touch keyboard and the upper side as display .
Then you could use to have two displays for two users at once ala Lenovo Yoga,Samsung Ativ ,one with Ios8 and the other with 10.9 ,10.10.
I only fear its too heavy or not so handy as Apple Standards are but i like the idea while its only a dream.

My prediction, not having gone thru all the posts, is that Apple will indeed replace the 11" ( possibly the 13" as well) MBA with a larger iPad. My variation on this rumor is that it will be a larger iPad with a detachable keyboard, but running full Mac OS X+iOS hybrid.

1. ARM 64-bit CPU
2. Full Mac OS X, compiled for ARM. Not sure if ARM would be powerful enough run something like Rosetta to run existing x86 apps.
3. Magnetically detachable BT keyboard/trackpad with extra battery. Perhaps with some sort of inductive power sharing/charging between the display and keyboard to eliminate any electrical connections.
4. Optional cellular radio
5. The CPU, RAM, SSD, etc. will all be behind the display.
6. Since Apple already gives all it's basic productivity and creativity apps away for free, Apple doesn't have to rely on third party apps to be recompiled for ARM for the consumer market this device is already targeted at.

Unlike the Microsoft Surface, Apple will execute flawlessly. Sometimes it is better not to be the first to enter the market. Apple also doesn't have to worry about pissing off their OEMs by entering the hardware market. Intel should be very worried, unless Apple intends to use one of Intel's planned low power mobile CPUs due to be released next year.

A larger iPad is valid without being an OS convergence device. I watch/show photos, surf the web, read/write mail, and do some light spreadsheeting - all of those benefit directly from a larger screen. None of them need to be recoded in any way either with a resolution change.
I've wanted a magazine size or slightly bigger screen since day one. With retina resolution and great colour fidelity such devices are a photographers dream.

Following a report last month stating that Apple supplier Quanta Computer had landed the contract to mass-produce a larger-sized iPad for late 2014, Digitimes is reporting that the 12.9-inch tablet will be released in October 2014 and will target North America's educational market. Apple is also said to be examining the possibility of replacing the 11-inch MacBook Air with the larger iPad.

I don't know about the timing of such a display/device on the mass-market (i.e. product Release), but I would love to see something like that incorporated into a "Air Duo". I think the 64-bit A7 gives a little more weight to the possibility, as iOS and OS could both be running 64-bit. I also have to think that, given all the things that are already in the market that do *not* show Apple's innovation and style, Apple can really knock this out of the park.

My vision has seriously degraded since i've had my iphone. I'm staring at the tiny screen a lot during the day... it would definitely be nice to have a bigger screen.

bigger iPad? Possible.
bigger iPhone? eh…may be
new iPhone at May? NO

I think most of the people that are saying No to a bigger phone released in May are the ones that are locked in to the 5S and wish they have waited. If Apple adds this bigger phone to the line up they can release a new phone in the beginning and end of the year. Sounds exactly how Samsung does it. Apple always released the iphone at the beginning of the year until recently. I see the bigger phone and the pro line up for iPad this Spring. Stuff I will be interested in.

I am so close to giving up waiting. I almost bought a SGN3 and a SGN8.

Please Apple don't let us down again.

Why you poor chap? Do you have bad eyesight? Or Giant pockets?

Large phones are for girls with handbags or men with Size 'issues'
Or people who prefer a single device instead of a 4 inch phone and a 8 Tablet, would love to have a phone with a two day battery, and are not so insecure about their masculinity.

I wonder if Android users suffer from the same delusion as you...... that their device is "outdated" the second a new device ships. If so, that would suck for them, as there is a new Android handset released about every ten days.

Feel free to prove it.

Lol, prove your wild opinion wrong??
I don't think you understand how opinions work, sir.

The only thing "wrong" with your opinion is that you haughtily present it falsely, arrogantly, and combatively as fact.

ok... lets see here...:-

Apple releases 11' Macbook Air only no more than 2 years ago... Probably the shortest lived..

Now, they are disgusted and want to replace it with a 12.9-inch "monster pad" (good name)

Apples changing focus here ?

They dived in with multiple sized laptop screens,,, they killed of the 17-inch to make room for the new Retina's. (and upset some people along the way)

They bought in a thinner/lighter MBA and everyone went nuts when they found out just how 'light' it feels.

Now they wanna ditch this one too, because they still have the 13-inch MBA, (but ITS A BUT HEAVIER)

Call me dumb, but isn't this why Apple introduced a smaller/lighter MBA to begin with ? because they gave uni students a way to not feel anything in their bag ?

How can this 12.9-inch be lighter than a 11-inch MBA.... The screen is huge..

People that use larger screens realize that competitors have now surpassed Apple in terms of quality.

These people are smart and Apple realizes this.

HTC One and Galaxy Note 3 look amazing.

Yes, the screens are bigger & @ very high resolutions & ppi... a scant few are even "better". I'm super jazzed about Apple following suit!
However, to say that ANY competitors have even approached Apple's quality (as in, build quality) with a straight face is just the ravings of a lunatic.

I was talking about display quality.

Yea, I like Apple design the best but I feel its only a matter of time before others catch up.

This is probably one of the most interesting Apple questions in my opinion that can currently be asked...
I believe that it depends a lot on their refresh cycles moving forward. I don't think that they're going to be able to do 1 phone per year any more... I think they know this & that's why we saw the 5C get introduced.... so that they could introduce at least two new phones each year.
Were they to stay with only 1-2 new phones per year I think that you'd be hard-pressed to convince me that any manufacturer has even a snowball's chance of catching up with them in build quality & design acumen. Let's put this into perspective; other manufacturers bring out at least a half dozen new phone models each year... so let's say one every two months. No matter what company they are... Apple has deeper pockets than them. It stands to reason that year after year, if they have much more time & money to focus on a product than the other guys- it would continue to have those two advantages (better design & build quality).
However, I'm not sure they want to continue with this same strategy anymore, as even non-tech people have got it figured out: if a new iPhone came out more than 6 months ago... you're over halfway through the refresh cycle; may as well wait... OR be tempted by a shiny new Android that might not have the design or build quality, but IS brand new, has a gorgeous big screen, & some cool new features.
If we do see a new iPhone in May, I think it'll be to serve as a disruptor... to show competition that they are NOT clockwork. I dunno... it's definitely going to be interesting to watch unfold.

Why does every Android device have a larger screen then? Look at the Moto X, it is roughly the same size as the iPhone 5S, but has a 4.7 inch screen. What is wrong with that? Nothing, why do I need these massive top and bottom bezels? Make the screen close to an inch bigger without making the phone huge and you will satisfy a ton of people. Oh and if you don't like it, don't get it. Don't worry about what others would like Apple to do.

ARM chips started life as powerful desktop-class chips, outperforming the x86 on the day. The computing power per watt remains phenomenal, which is why the design dominate mobile.

In recent years ARM have been making server-class designs and, if there was a customer, could create design suitable for MacBooks, iMacs etc, and still delver significant heat/battery savings.

If Apple could get all its own apps compiled on a Mac OS X machine running on ARM, perhaps switchable with iOS, they would likely begin in the 'MacBook Air' space. This would give third parties motivation to start compiling for arm and when beefier ARM-based machines arrived down the line much of the work would already have been done.
