Great measure of the device's success. Mircrosoft will have a lot of catching up to do when they release a product again to compete.

I don't see why everyone thinks there is going to be a new iPad before the holidays though. Would not make sense with the current success to retool the factories that are only now catching up and prepping for the holiday demand. I think version two will be at the one year point. At the rate of growth, I don't think the current gen is quite obsolete.

And for all the comments about "fanboys" having to trade in their Gen 1 for Gen 2, so what if I trade mine in after one year. I spend more a month on Starbucks than the $60/month my iPad will have cost me after one year to own. I spend $60 in a single fill-up at the gas station. It is a very small piece of what I spend a month in overall costs of living. I pay far more for things that I enjoy and use far less. As with all things tech, there will always be a new update coming. You can sit on the side lines, always waiting for the newest, or you can enjoy the present.

Slip up, maybe. Hint, more likely. I'm pretty sure the next iPad will have a camera, at least a front facing camera. I can see it all now; Apple will update the iPad to 128GB, followed by the iPhone to 64GB, then the iPod to 128GB. If you ask me, Apple's milking it. The iPod's storage should have been updated this time round.

As for the camera, I'm guessing they'll implement a 3mp into the back of the iPad, and hopefully for the Touch next time. I would've been a candidate for purchasing a Touch, but there's no way I'm having a less than 1mp camera on the back; complete utter waste.

Woah, I blatantly digressed...

If you are contemplating an iPad purchase, try to wait till Jan.

Now that the iPod Touch has a camera (actually two cameras), it safe to say then next rev of the iPad will have a camera/cameras too. I get the feeling Steve Jobs wants Facetime everywhere. $499 is still too steep for me. It'll be awhile before I jump on an iPad.

This is insane.. 36 million Ipads in one year?!?! The economy is obviously not bad for a whole lot of people out there.

It's so clear that it will have camera because everyone cried about it not being there in the first place.

Lines continue

A week ago I was at a local Apple Store where there was a line of perhaps 30 people queued up outside with vouchers to receive their iPad. The store was packed with people inside as well.

More production does not always require working harder or less Q&A. As a production line matures, you can find little bottlenecks and wastes that slow production down. With any luck, Apple will be able to scale up production, increase product quality and decrease the load on workers.

It would be nice if Apple gave us the option (don't flame me conservatives, I said option) to pay an extra $10 for it's devices that would go directly to those who make them.

Forward facing-camera for Face Time and Skype makes sense. But a rear-facing? Not so sure. This thing is a little large for most people to be out and about with it, snapping images. Plus, with its size, comes a different style of case, many, portfolio styled. Will be a little odd having holes cut out in the back of leather binders and many of the other cases people like. Not impossible of course, but just not the way I would use my iPad, even if it had a camera. But I would certainly make use of a forward-facing.

With a bigger device, you have room for a bigger camera. With a bigger camera, you have room for a bigger lens. With a bigger lens, you have room for better pictures.

All the same, I think I will stick with my Cannon D5.

Man, this Foxcon thing kills me (pun intended) :) . The suicide rate at the Foxcon plant is LESS that the statistical average in the Chinese population. Conditions and jobs in the plant are good enough that LESS people want to kill themselves there than in the rest of China.

It's also less than some American cities.

Yes, this is insane (and wrong). If Apple's production is going up to 3million now, then you'd have to wait another year and have stable production to reach the 36million. It is not going to happen. By the end of this year, rumours will circulate about the newer ones. Whether the 3million per month is sustainable - no one knows.

When's the iPad finally coming to Taiwan?

SJ! Aren't Taiwanese firms cranking out these things for you? Why are Taiwanese so low on the iPad rollout list?? I hope to pick up one here before 2011...geez.

Man this abuse of statistics thing kills me (no pun intended) :) .

The suicide rate at the American factories is LESS than the statistical average in the American population. It's time to compare thing 'like for like'. Suicide rates at Foxcon should be compared with factory workers' suicide rate. Young people in employment have significantly lower tendency to suicide than the rest of the population.

Holy iPads

Indeed - a quite incredible number of units to be selling. It makes me smile every time I read a post from tech geeks saying:

"Too limited"
"Walled garden"
"No Flash"
"Only 256Mb"
"No camera"

Guess what - ordinary users just don't care about the stuff we think about - they are fed up of dealing with the crap that comes with these so called 'proper computers".

Are they making their way over from HK with big mark up?

Where in Taiwan are you? I stayed in Hsinchu for 6 months a few years back.

Man these kills me jokes are killing me (pun always intended) :) .

Lets compare the suicide rate to other companies that chain their workers to a desk 23 hours a day. One thing to remember, the penalty for killing yourself at Foxcon is extreme. I understand you lose three shifts pay and may or may not get time off to go to your own funeral.

The sad thing is, Apple works quite hard to insure there workers get the best treatment. It makes you wonder what the other companies do to their workers.

This economy? WTF? China's economy is doing just fine I think.
China's economy is taking a big hit. They make most of their money selling stuff to us and we don't have the money to buy it. By this time next year, Chinese will be buying cheep stuff from low cost American workers. They will be pushing to have Americans paid a fair wage to stop the unfair competition.

I agree, apart from the last one. The last one is something consumers will care about. That's why front-cams on iPhone 4 is promoted so heavily - people do care about that.
