To put it more accurately, we are the leverage. Apple has aggregated the best customers in the world, and the beauty of this is that they are not afraid to use this access to its user base as leverage in its discussions with developers and suppliers.
Just curious what you mean by this. When you say “the best” do you mean people with more disposable income? People with better taste, of a higher class? Just trying to understand your definition of “the best”.

Wow,..I'm amazed that Apple has hoodwinked OpenAI into providing their service for free! Is there anything that this trillion dollar company can't scrooge?
Isn’t there a free version of ChatGPT? I assume that is what is part of Apple Intelligence for everyone who isn’t using OpenAI’s paid service?

Higher propensity to spend (which I guess is correlated with more disposable income). It’s why the iOS App Store generates more revenue than the Android store despite the latter having more users.

What's the catch? Nothing is free. Usually when something is "free" you pay with your data... I can only assume that this will scale up to millions if not billions of queries per day, who pays the bill for the data centers?
Microsoft is footing the bill. OpenAI is not sustainable currently. It's not much of a stretch for Apple to not have to pay OpenAI anything, as ChatGPT with a dumbed-down GPT-4o model is free for anyone to use, and OpenAI is getting immense exposure on iPhone.

ChatGPT is all about converting free users to ChatGPT Plus. iOS users tend to spend much more than Android users on apps and subscriptions, so this could be a gold mine for OpenAI.

This is savage, Mr. Cook. Well done making OpenAI your *****
This is a mutually beneficial situation. OpenAI is not providing Apple users with free access to their paid tier of service. They've been very clear on their blog that you can link your account and get paid features within your Apple devices.

There's a LOT of different AI services out there besides ChatGPT. Just off the top of my head, there's Claude, Perplexity, Google Gemini, Meta AI, and HuggingChat.

But thanks to their partnership with Apple, OpenAI cements ChatGPT as THE AI chatbot to use for every iPhone user from now on... and I think that's gotta be worth something. 🤔

It certainly is outstanding exposure and validation, but with or without the deal, ChatGPT is the LLM right now.

  • Claude Pro, Gemini Advanced and ChatGPT Plus are in a league of their own right now.
  • Gemini is hamstrung for a huge amount of queries. Anything related to US elections, candidates and a whole host of other sensitive topics is all off the table.
  • Claude cannot access the internet and has fairly stingy usage limits even for paid users.
  • The new GPT-4o model is amazing. Comparable performance to the initial GPT-4 model but much, much faster. And the Bing search is faster than ever, there's almost nothing ChatGPT won't chat about and the usage limits are much more reasonable for paid users.
ChatGPT was always the best option for Apple.

And we all know that when you don't pay, you are the product… so… yeah.

OpenAI are definitely getting something in return. Just, perhaps not in cash.
Well said! And then we have to take as a good and reliable the grandiloquent promise about data privacy. Come on! I have Word for Mac and, of course, they tried to lure me for the add-in GPT. No way Jose!

What are all of the die-hard fanboys going to say now that they are becoming the product just like they used to say about Google?
This is different. This is like socialism. We’re all contributing to a more intelligent AI. It’s not about individual market targeting. Google was about learning you to sell to you. Chat GPT is about training the AI to sell the tool.

Is the other way around...like Google is paying Apple to be the default search engine
But there is clearly a financial benefit, as Google search results deliver sponsored results. Clear financial benefit to Google.

This is such a Steve Jobs style deal. Who pulled this off? It’s one of those you need us not we need you moments. Exactly how Steve Jobs played Sony and other record companies around the iTunes days.

What are the benefits of paying for ChatGPT Plus? Also, I wonder if there are any privacy implications in this deal. 🤔

chat gpt plus is way more powerful in its responses and faster. You will also get access to a ton of other modals like Dall-E for image generation.

Apple is not just sitting idly by enjoying this arrangement. They are developing their own version of ChatGPT. Later down the road they will announce their version and end the relationship. They did that with Internet Explorer and then suddenly Safari was released.

Is everyone missing the point here? OpenAI gets billions of queries into their system to add to ChatGPTs training data. The data they will gather on queries made are invaluable compared to pennies per transaction. Then as they advance their model way past anyone else it will be nearly impossible for anyone else’s LLMs to catch up.

Microsoft, on the other hand, practically needs to pay users to engage in their Co-Pilot features or shove them down their throat via app integration. I don’t think OpenAI believes they will get nearly as much data from the Microsoft arrangement….

Another possibility is Microsoft is paying for more exclusive access which they offer to enterprise customers for data segregation. Apple conversely offers no such feature and instead are likely going to try to make/acquire some other LLM…. I question how successful they will be given the rate of evolution these platforms are going through.

Google pays billions for the privilege of their search engine being the starboard (that can be changed at any time) and they make 100x more through ad revenue. If ChatGBT can figure out their business model, they just got access to millions of devices for free, and therefore will be able to eat up Googles market share.
