Can’t even remember the last time I plugged a lightning cable into any of my devices. Minus my iPad Air 4 using usb-c Doesn’t bother me much. 🤷

Wrong. Nothing has stopped Apple to start moving to USB-C years ago. Stop defending cooperate greed over the welfare of the planet and think you are on the right side of history. There is no excuse for the capitalistic greed on this account.
Why should apple have moved to usb-c? There is little benefit to me and i suppose others who are against this as well. The EU by legislating this created an environmental nightmare. I don’t care if apple was making a fortune on lightning this is the EUs doing.

Its hilarious that greed over the lightning fees has created this stupid mess. I think what will happen is that soon the tech world will invent a new universal connector, and 6 months later Apple will proudly announce it that it has migrated all of its devices to the now obsolete USB-C connector.

"It took us a while, but we did it right".

I view the switch to usb c more as one of convenience and less of being environmentally friendly. You are still using a cable to charge it at the end of the day, and I don’t think people are going to cycle one usb c cable amongst all their gadgets, so you aren’t really helping to save anything.

Or in my case, I charge it wirelessly like this, bypassing the port altogether.

So first it's a desperate fight - which is pretty much lost - to keep App Store monopoly. Then the fight to keep stupid licensing fee cow to be milked the lightening VERSUS the same USBC which is also the same cable standard Apple pushed so hard in order to get rid of all ports on the Mac. This fight is also lost. Then the last-ditch attempt at custom chipped USBC cables in order to "make sure" they "charge correctly" as if USB-PD is some kind of joke that on all devices across the globe would somehow fail to perform on the iphone.
What an ****** of a company, with the utmost contempt towarda end users and fair competition. At literally every turn!

Apple assumes that the overwhelming majority of AirPod users will own an iPhone.

The iPhone is switching to USB-C. It makes sense that you have one connector standard to charge these two products, which are designed to be used together.

Just because the AirPods 3 will (allegedly) not be gaining USB-C does not mean Apple will not update it in the future.
I think what I mean is a lot of people simply aren't taking advantage of USB C today. C exists in the form of C to Lighting already. I expect when Apple finally moves to USB C on its iPhone, we'll see people still using A to C cables for many years.

The PC industry also holds us back with the best flagship motherboards maybe having 2 USB C slots at best? I wish they just ripped the band aid off and went like 4x or 6x USB C like a Studio Mac does.

USB C AirPods 4 confirmed for 1st of January 2025?

Another great way to screw the lower end consumer by selling them a device with the legacy connector right up to the legal date they're forced to change it ;)

EDIT: Well not screwed so much, just penalised in the future-proofing game.
Lightning cables will still work…

I still have things that use micro usb. I’m oh penalised for that. Transitions are always messy.

I’m actually glad about this. I’ve been thinking of getting new AirPods next year but I want to keep my iPhone 13 mini for awhile yet. I’d honestly prefer them to be lighting like my phone.

You didn't. Lightning is a far more mechanically robust connector, designed for frequent insertions/extractions, and is especially ideal for devices that do not need much charging current and don't need to transport high-speed data.

Given the discussions I've had with some members on here, that isn't common knowledge and isn't something they want to 'believe' even when presented with some evidence. They were clearly Android fan boys and couldn't accept an Apple connector was in one aspect better than USBC. Some bizzare party loyalty on this forum which makes sense given most users here are American.

Because macbooks were USBC, so were iPads. Makes sense to make everything USBC doesn't it?

Yes it you already are using those devices it makes perfect sense to use a USB-C charger AirPod Pro. The world of Apple is not just iPhones, maybe some think it is but really lightning reign is coming to an end with iPhone 15 models. Now you’ll be looking for accessories for those models. Eventually the other AirPods will be not lightning.

I can tell you a good reason why they do have plans: they want to sell these things in European Union member nations.

I wonder how true any of this is. Depending on point of view it makes the most sense to change the AirPods 2nd gen and 3rd gen lightning first because they only use wired charging - 3rd gen MagSafe and Pros can charge wirelessly - the cable is irrelevant. The other point of view is that it makes the most sense to change the 3rd gen MagSafe and pros first because they have a wireless charging capability. Those using them are unlikely to care what cable they have anyway (they are presumably utilizing the wireless charge capability).

Many people just need something to moan about in order to feel better and have a better day.
The problem with lightning is that the connector is exposed so it runs out easily, thie did not hapen to the original (30 pin) because the connectors were covered. I’ve had more lightning connnectors run out than any USBC or 30 Pin

Lightning is a far more mechanically robust connector,

Except it's not. The lightning connector on my iPhones has gone mushy and doesn't always connect after about 2 years, the same thing is happening to my current iPhone. And yes I've cleaned the port of lint.

My MacBook Air on the other hand with USB C which is 5 years old clicks in solidly every time.

This hasn't made a difference for me in the real world. None of my Lightning ports or USB-C ports has ever worn out or broken. I don't really care about the aesthetics of the click. The only real advantage I see is Lightning being slightly easier to plug in. To me it seems this robustness argument is often both overstated and speculative.
