I am getting a refund tomorrow. I got a replacement a day after I got the first one and this one has more problems than the one before. How can I ask Apple for the 15 percent extra without asking for it? lol

They are not nice. 15% is damage control. The issue must be one hard and expensive to solve. I venture they are trying to minimize a class action suit and further bad press.

True, this is a PR issue. However, what other company has done anything close to this? Not trying to be difficult just curious as I can not think of anyone at the moment.

apple comes through once again. its great to c this

Seriously?

They're still shipping broken machines. They have not acknowledged the yellow tint issue. It's real, and its pretty bad especially on an expensive machine designed for video editing and high-end design work.

I've been waiting to order 2 Quad iMacs at work because of all the issues. And I'm not any more likely to do so just because they're giving a refund for those experiencing problems. I'd much rather have NO refund and get the machine i've paid for. I'm guessing many of the people getting the refunds would feel the same way, especially those in a business environment who've experienced downtime because of this.

Good to see that they are taking care of people. Reassuring for buying any products in future that they will take care of you if there are problems. Although you hope they won't happen in the first place!

Take that Microsoft and Dell.

Dell; You need to call Microsoft is a softwore problem,
Microsoft: you need to call dell is Hardware problem

Thats why I love Mac

Who is Mac, and does he know of this love you have for him?

Has anyone here actually been offered the 15%? If so, was it after several replacements?

I have a BTO 27" Core i7 that I ordered the day they were announced. It has the yellow tint problem. I haven't done anything about it yet because I didn't want to be bothered boxing it up only to get another bad screen. I think it's time I called Apple though, if for nothing else than to get a timetable of when I might expect to be able to get a non-lemon iMac when I send mine in for replacement/repair.

Got to wonder if it was a rush or that quality control at apple has gone down as they have gone up. I also worry about 1st gen ipad could it also come out with problems because of quality control. :(

I really hate to say this but I don't think there's any question that quality control has gone downhill at Apple:

MB (non-unibody): Wrist wrest cracking problems (design issue)
MB (unibody): very easily cracked plastics
MBP (non-unibody): Faulty Nvidia GPU, poorly fitted keyboards, poorly aligned cases, yellow-tint on LED-backlit screens, defective batteries, corrosion on cases.
iPod Nano (3rd Gen): Misaligned screens
iPod Touch (1st Gen): Negative blacks
Mac Pro: Audio issues causing serious performance issues
iMac: uh, this article! Plus cracked displays, flickering screens and the aluminium case scratching optical media.

That's just a sample of course, there's far more examples out there and I really wish Apple would a) get it right far more often than they do at the moment and b) actually acknowledge the problem when it comes up. It's the second one really that annoys me the most, these are really expensive machines and to see Apple claim that there aren't any issues when there's clear evidence to the contrary really isn't good enough.

Wait... let me get this straight.

You received a defective computer which cost several thousands of dollars and sat on your hands?

You didn't want to bother Apple or yourself?

Wow. Yes, I think it IS time you called Apple. This is why Apple has dragged their feet. Apathetic people who settle for defective merchandise. If you owned a Toyota and the accelerator recall issue casueed you to wrap yourself around a tree, would it be a bother as well?

Do yourself a favor and return it. In a few weeks, they may have a solution. There is an internal memo which leaked outlining such. Do a search for it, here. :)

I really fail to see how Apple's 12-18 product cycle can in any way be considered a "rush" to market". Look at all the products brought to market every year by any computer or electronics corporation. Look at Samsung for instance, they do just about everything, including many of Apple's components. The truth is they are neglecting the Mac, in terms of hardware and software. They are also in a frenzy to maximize profit, possibly by going low bid in the manufacturing, resulting in possible quality compromises.

Steve Jobs can only focus on one thing and one thing at a time. That is how he runs and manages Apple. It is well known how hands on and non-delegating he is. This is evident in the way Apple's products and quality have evolved since his return. First the original iMac, then the iPod/iTunes, then the iPhone and now the iPad. All great products (don't forget the product flops like the Air and Apple TV), but one segment at a time. Apple can't keep its focus on multiple fronts because of Jobs management style. Ever since the Intel switch (and not because of it), Macs have become less and less compelling. I've been hanging on due to Mac OS, but recently even that has become stagnant.

I'm very tempted to return mine and get a MBP and a 24in. display. This yellow screen crap has been infuriating.

That's my setup at the office. I need the portability of the MBP, but I need the screen real estate of the 2 displays. I do logistics, so I am working a lot with maps and multiple browser windows. The 24 in display is a dream: Works flawlessly, get additional USB ports, speakers, and an iSight camera! Two thumbs up from me!

Whoa! I'm not apathetic, and I never said I settled. It's just that I didn't feel like being bothered potentially returning several large computers just to finally get a good one. I've been following this news from the beginning and figured I'd wait until Apple had it all straightened out before I returned it. So I'm not apathetic, just lazy enough not to want to rebox a freakin 27" screen and drag it to the Apple Store until I knew for certain it would give me the result I wanted.

As for the Toyota comparison, don't be silly. No one is going to die from a yellow screen. Don't be such a drama queen.

Having had to replace my first 27" (an i7) in the first week, and then experiencing a failure of the optical drive 6 weeks after receiving the replacement, I would recommend anyone with ANY 27" problems to ACT FAST! Apple's official policy is that complete replacement or refund is an option only within the first 30 days of possession. After that, repair is the only solution.

Good short term solution...

As others have said, nice gesture! Those of us with our life savings invested in tech products no how much 15% can really matter... especially 15% of the prices of apple products:) .

I do have to say, though, that I've been somewhat dissappointed with failures on some of my Apple gear. First, my late 2008 Mini blew a logic board and had to be replaced and then I realized that the front indicator lights on my early 2009 uni-mbp are not working... come to think of it, I don't ever recall them working. It's not an issue I would exchange for, but it's frustrating nonetheless...

The lastest issue is that I have been unable to connect my Mini to my HDTV HDMI inputs despite having sunk a fair amount of cash in acquiring every cable known to man. I've tried everthing on the help forums but no dice (my Mini has a full sized DVI port). The consensus seems to be that it would have worked fine in Leopard but broke in Snow Leopard :( .

Oh, I also had an iPod Touch die on me, that was replaced earlier this year and my SL family pack ordered from the Apple Store was never delivered (neither was my free SL Server disk that must be Lost in Space somewhere).

Coming from Quality Assurance background, it seems Apple needs to do something about their Manufacturing Reliability... the "refund" is really only a short-term solution and, if MS keeps make headway in the OS war (Win 7), buggy Apple software and/or unreliable Apple hardware will really work to their advantage. I loathe the day they work some of these types of issues into a PC ad, though Mac would have plenty of ammo for a counterattack.

At a point when Apple is attracting so many from the PC world, it's time to shore things up a bit and make sure there's no chinks in the armor.

Here's some more:
iPhone 3G and 3GS: Case cracks around silence switch and 30-pin connector
iBook (03/04): Extensive logic board failures
Power Mac G4 (MDD): Noisy fans forced Apple to issue replacement Power Supplies
Mac OS X Leopard: Prematurely released, extremely unstable (for a Mac OS)

So, they've always had issues, they've just been increasing a lot more in recent times.

I think a lot of the problems Apple faces these days could be fixed by simply dumping the glass that's in place in front of their displays. Clearly, on a 27-inch display, a thin layer of glass can't hold up on that large of a surface. Besides, the vast majority of Apple users I come across cannot stand the glare brought on by the glass (including myself). Apple seems to be focusing on form these days, where as they used to focus on form and function, but ultimately function, and what customers really wanted, came first. The way I see it, they are becoming an "our way or the highway" type of company in terms of their product designs.

Are the issues increasing over time, or is the user base increasing, hence the larger outcry when issues do happen?
More and more people buy Apple products.

apple actually offer these sorts of 'good will gestures' quite often. I have had 2 experiences with them:

1st experience

Mac Pro 2008 (cost me ~ £2800) Had two duds in a row so they gave me £200 pounds in cash and £600 in apple products (if i remember correctly)

Original spend £2800
Total after apple gesture £2000
Percentage discount: 28%

2nd experience

Macbook 2009 (cost me ~ £750) Had a dud machine so sent it back, but apple lost it and it took 4 weeks for them to return my money. They gave me £150

Original spend £750
Total after gesture £600
Effective percentage discount: 20%
