I might have not said in the right way, If I go to a website it should default to opt out, this means no popup with Options, If you want to Opt in there should be a button in a default position on that page on every site/subpage to do so.
Well, again technically they all are opt-out by default - they have to be. The thing is, we press the "wrong" button, and that's where the problem lays.

I wholly agree that the thing should be completely standardised, with behaviours and patterns explicitly specified - but that's an ideal world, and we're far from living in one. :( Hopefully one day.

I don't want my American data going to a competitor I don't know or care about. I didn't authorize those people to have my information.

An example: Let's say a group of people, which includes Alice and Bob, agree they would like to see Business B stop buying up smaller ones before they get a chance to grow into competitors. Alice decides to try and make this change happen by boycotting business B, which comes at a significant cost to her as there's no real alternative to business B (it bought them all up). Bob shares Alice's concern, but isn't willing to pay the cost. Now one of two things happens: either enough people act like Alice and Business B changes its practices, in which case Bob got the result he wanted for free, or nothing changes and Alice has paid the price for nothing. So Bob's better off that Alice either way. From a strictly selfish perspective the system incentivises you to do nothing.

… Are you a cryptographer? Hehe

I think what I've just described is a well know element of economics/politics and probably has at least one proper name, and plenty people explaining it better than I can (I'd appreciate it if someone can link to somebody doing so!)

I don't know much about the study of economics, but from a philosophy perspective it sounds a bit like the prisoner's dilemma

Not really sure what you're reacting to here, but I can assure that, completely respectable of this article here and the EU, your data is going all over the world to actors you know nothing about when it gets sold by Google, Microsoft, Facebook, et al

Macrumors is an American company talking about rumors regarding another American company. If you are so against American things, why dont you leave and dont come back? No one is keeping you here. And no one is forcing you to buy an Apple product.

The second they do force you to buy one, I will support your opinion whole heartedly. Until then, Leave!

LMAO, this is not how it works Mr Trump

You can use a product and criticize certain things the company and the system behind is doing. I know, shocker.

Good. Big tech needs to be put under control.

Waiting for the brainwashed Americans to come defend their favorite multi-trillion dollar corporation while they fear getting sick so they don't get left with crippling debt.

the fact there is even a hit list sounds like a personal vendetta against foreign companies. I don’t see any issue years again again Virgin and it’s businesses. Furthermore this comes hot of the heels of EU leader when she was embarrassed for loosing court decision against Apple. She was quoted as wanted to go after them - seems personal not legal or ideal for the EU.

share data with competitors and give no preference to their own apps and services as part of its new Digital Services Act.

This doesn’t make any competitive sense. What data is expected to be shared? How they work with business and products or just research data of how their products are doing?

no preferences to their own apps and digital services lol? Then why even compete at all?! What innovation or services can be offered as an incentive to customers?

I can see Google’s services being forced to manufacturers on Android being disruptive since without including Google’s services then manufacturers will not get any Google services which is a detriment to having typical Android. Many customers want Android this way yet are not aware another Android OS exists without Google’s services and thus tracking. It’s very similar to how Microsoft forced Internet Explorer, then Edge browsers to be on Windows when PC makers brokered a deal forcing out initial web browser competition.

note in each case neither Google nor Microsoft built their own hardware in the first place for years until the last 7yrs roughly. Yet they still push this - EU stopped Microsoft from bundling their browser on Windows as they had a monopoly in the EU.

the difference with Apple is it’s their OS on their hardware. Their not partnering with manuafacturers as competitors and locking them in. They do not have a controlling lead in smartphone nor laptop market in any country in the world. Not 1! Their not stopping other software makers to use their platform. Sure there are and have been issues with locking them out of certain API’s.

Spotify couldn’t use WatchOS to have a native app that stored music locally for playback until WatchOS 6 yet it’s been Spotify’s laziness to even update their watch app to use an updated API to allow this until middle of 2020. No regulation was needed for that. Also note Spotify has a very controlling lead in all global markets in streaming music services and very soon the podcast market. Again Apple is not at fault here. Should Apple allow Spotify to be the default music player on iOS? Sure I’m for it - along with other emus if player apps. (Personally I feel Spotify is horrible as a music playback for their free music tier and if EU pushes for this change then they should review Spotify’s business practice of poor App UI for free use which leads to push clients to subscribe to get basic functionality. Seems very monopolistic. 8Track, SoundCloud, Deezr all don’t limit free users from having store music locally. Apple doesn’t either yet until you subscribe to streaming service which overwrites your personally owned music in iOS and no clear cut way to keep your music and have streamed music stored locally / not even in separate playlists! It’s tricky and involves using a computer and going through too many hoops to get it right.

Apple has allowed browsers and email apps to be native. There is a very tricky business due to security concerns of data mining of iOS users - something the EU talks the talk but doesn’t walk the walk beyond cookies cause they don’t know Jack!!

so this data sharing and not wanting to allow software creators having their apps first upon released products (OS inclusive) without detailed steps seems arbitrary.

"Under the plans, big tech companies could quickly be forced to change their business practices without the need for an investigation or the breaking of any law. In extreme circumstances, big tech companies could be broken up if they are found to be discouraging rivals."

Is this a joke?

No, but yes. :)

Karma. I remember Apple helping and participating in the Dept of Justice action against Microsoft. Apple does not deserve this in the same way that Microsoft was unfairly targeted back in 1998- prompted in many ways by Steve Jobs. So, who is the evil one in that 1984 Apple commercial? LOL

Do we know what happens to the stock of companies after they're identified as monopolies and broken up?

What happened to the value of AT&T after it was split up? Standard Oil? Disney and the other movie studios that were forced to spin off their theater chains decades ago?

Large tech companies have no one to blame for this other than themselves. Irrespective of whether the EU will execute well, the tide has turned. People are no longer supportive of tech telling them what they need, when they need it and how much it’s going to cost them.

I don't see this ever happening, but if all those big tech companies were to stop doing business with the EU because of this, the politicians would quickly change their tune.

Thank you for the compliment..... I appreciate that.

And you must be into sadomasochism to expose yourself to all this American negativity. You werent exclusively criticizing something the company specifically was saying or doing. You were criticizing what Americans we doing at least when it comes to covid.

So like I said, please exit and do not return.

Not all cookies require a pop-up notification in the EU (for instance, a shopping cart info and similar "strictly necessary" functions are allowed), but nearly every site have some sort of user tracking system for 3rd parties, so hence the pop-up. It would be quite easy to make a better user experience by removing useless cookies. But money talks. And people blame the EU for bad experience.

What comes Apple to be on the ”hit list”, there’s a problem when Apple starts to compete with other service providers. Spotify is a good example, they innovated, Apple copied, denied Spotify’s access to Siri for first years, charges still 30% cut, and uses the OS to market solely Apple service... Apple can also observe how users are using competitors product.... they can only win. Apple has nearly 50% share of the mobile markets in the US, so their behavior is abusive.

Meanwhile in Germany if you’re not one of Edeka, Rewe, Aldi, Lidl, and to some extent Tegut or Penny, you can’t even be in the groceries business.
Odd. When I lived in Hamburg I had no problem shopping at any number of small grocers that provided excellent product and decent customer service (for Germany, anywhere else and it might be called customer disservice). If your only criteria in food is cheap, perhaps you see an Aldi world. But don’t forget there are many of us that actually buy stuff we cook and eat. Our criteria is quality, not lowest cost.

Your comment might apply to Switzerland or France where the mega-grocers stock excellent product. But in Germany, for those that want decent quality, the mega's are like shopping at 7/11.

Apple will be divided into 2 companies.
Period.

The first company "App Inc" will focus on iOS, handheld devices and emojis. Headquarters will remain in Ireland.

The second company, called "le Inc" a.k.a "Logic Engineering Inc" will focus on serious computing, Mac OS and professional products. Headquarters will be in France, hence the name "Le Inc" like "Le Monde" or "Le préservatif"... it will be a very frenchesque company with lots of cafes inside the headquarters, where you can have a coffee and smoke at the same time or have frog soup for lunch ...

Oh, and Sorry, Cupertino will close. That building will be bought by Stanford, so they can build a particle collider in there.

Not any different from how the US is telling Chinese companies what to do, or for that matter even how Hongkong is to be governed…

Or how the US thinks it can “fine” European banks for breaking various unilateral “sanctions” the US has come up with against perceived enemies.

It's payback time.

I love how the EU tells US companies what to do. I hope every one of these companies just stops doing business in the EU.
