I for one am glad to hear the news, though I'm kicking myself for upgrading to iPhone 4 and signing a new contract with AT&T.

I'm so tired of their lack of coverage. My phone doesn't work at my house and it drops calls all over the Bay Area (where I live). I'm on vacation now - of course it doesn't work here either. I'm now completely used to standing next to someone talking on their phone when mine won't even get a signal.

Unfortunately, I'm one of those suckers on a family plan so I won't be jumping ship until 2012. Sucks for me.

Don't kick yourself for believing you should have held out. This isn't "news". Its the same rumor that has come up again and again only to be proven wrong each time. There will be no Verizon iphone in the next year. And I say that as a Verizon customer of many years who would be very happy to get an iphone.

But don't forget CDMA iPhone4 can also be used in China!

Actually no. Chinese's CDMA system requires a R/UIM card, and American phones don't have that. They have ESN IDs. So, even though the radio bands might work, there are protocol differences.

"AT&T also reiterated its position that AT&T customers will not defect to rival carriers in large numbers once the iPhone goes non-exclusive, claiming that 80% of customers are on family or business plans that make it difficult for them to switch."

Keep telling your share holders that! If the iPhone is opened up to Tmobile and Verizon then there will be competition to get as much of the pie as possible. This is a good thing for the consumer.

Also IF the iPhone does goes CDMA then the new software hackers (similar to unlocking on Tmobile today) will be how to get the iPhone on regional and secondary networks like Metro PCS (unlimited everything for $50 OR LESS!)

Other countries use CDMA as their primary means of communication. South Korea, Japan, and Singapore all come to mind.
S. Korea and Japan use CDMA for 2G, but are migrating to UMTS for 3G. Singapore? Which dimension are you from? Singtel, M1, and Starhub are GSM/UMTS carriers.

I think enough news is lining up, I expect to see the Verizon iPhone in the 1st qtr 2011.

While there are R-UIM systems in use in China, American CDMA phones can be used there.

KDDI in Japan and China Telecom in China both already have 3G via EVDO Rev A which is a 3.5G technology according to the ITU. They're currently upgrading to EVDO Rev B, a 3.75G technology before their eventual migration to LTE I imagine. I haven't read anything about either deploying UMTS.

I am definitely looking forward to a Verizon iPhone because;

1. AT&T sucks.
2. AT&T sucks.
3. AT&T sucks.
4. AT&T sucks.
:D

I'm looking forward to it as well so people like you will see that VZ isn't really ANY better at all in the Chicago area than AT&T. My iPhone4 has consistently better signal (in -dBm, not bars) than my friend's incredible and usually KILLS it in data rate comparisons from the same location/time. (I mention chicago because FlyinggPenguin's location is chicago)

Also, competition is a great catalyst for progress. It keeps everyone a little more honest and most importantly, happy!

At the rate that Android is growing, VZ will have its hands full handling network traffic if they get the iPhone. Lets see them "rule the air" (dumbest ad campaign EVER imo) after getting the iPhone...

AT&T won't seem so bad anymore when you're paying more for your plan at VZ and don't even get visual voicemail without an additional monthly fee (a la droid handsets). Couple that with more customer service horror stories than you can shake a stick at, and VZ won't be the number 1 carrier in terms of satisfaction for much longer...

Yes, it's the subject that's been beaten to death: a Verizon iPhone. The ongoing rumors have been stoked in recent weeks by a claim from Bloomberg that the device will launch in January, with this week's announcement that Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg will offer the keynote address at CES 2011 sparking speculation that an iPhone introduction could occur there.

TechCrunch weighs in today with new claims that Apple has placed a large order for Qualcomm CDMA chips to be deployed in an iPhone production run scheduled for December. The claims come from a source reportedly familiar with the supply chain logistics for the CDMA-based chips that would be required for a Verizon iPhone. As the report notes, the evidence does not guarantee a Verizon iPhone launch in January, "but all of the signals point that way", adding another claim to the growing chorus of reports suggesting that a launch is coming early next year.

AT&T has already moved to downplay the risk to its bottom line posed by the loss of its exclusivity for the iPhone in the U.S., noting in its latest quarterly filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it expects no "material negative impact" from the expiration of its exclusive handset distribution agreements.AT&T also reiterated its position that AT&T customers will not defect to rival carriers in large numbers once the iPhone goes non-exclusive, claiming that 80% of customers are on family or business plans that make it difficult for them to switch.

I actually think it is good that Apple will expand one day. Just dont think it will be before 2012. I have seen a ton of "Apple is going to Verizon" articles to only see it NOT happen.

Ill believe it when the source is more credible.......like when Steve Jobs announces it. And when they expand, i fully expect T-Mobile to be a part of that. And Iphone is good, but the customizable ability of the Android and their fast coming good OS systems might be hard to leave by 2012 and i surely dont need both.

Those are not the only carriers in those countries. In Japan, NTT docomo and Softbank are UMTS, alongside CDMA. China Unicom is UMTS.

Why is it that for years we have web hearing rumors about vz iPhone and apple tv refresh? These are seriously the two rumors that just won't go away and have yet to become true. Hoping for both, bracing for neither.

Those are not the only carriers in those countries.

I never claimed that they were.

In Japan, NTT docomo and Softbank are UMTS, alongside CDMA.

I believe you mean W-CDMA which, while similar, isn't the same thing as CDMA that KDDI, Verizon, Sprint, etc. use.

A company that NTT DoCoMo has a sizeable stake in, Tata Teleservices, uses CDMA, but Tata provides service in India, not Japan.

China Unicom is UMTS.

Yep they sure are, China Unicom sold their CDMA assets to China Telecom and as noted earlier, China Telecom is upgrading to EVDO Rev B, not UMTS.

Clearly you didn't see my post about China Telecom. But what's a hundred million Chinese, right?;)

Yeah, and probably 1% of the chinese population could actually afford an
iPhone considering the minimum wage is approx $140 USD per month ...

Quoted for record.

1% percent of the Chinese population is 13 million people. That's like saying the populations of New York and Los Angeles combined are a small demographic.

FYI, luxury car makers are profits have been the highest in years thanks to sales in china. I'm going out on a limb, but I think they can afford iphones there.
