"Verizon Wireless smartphone customers use 25 percent more data than AT&T iPhone customers, thanks in large part to new Verizon's new Android smartphones, a recent study indicates."

It's because all the Fragdroid phones are sending their users' private data to Chinese hackers.
What are you talking about?

Android phones send user data to Google, so they can make more money from their highly proprietary, non-open source cash cow, Google AdWords. That's why Google provides the Android OS free to smartphone manufacturers. They want your usage data so they can make more money on search advertising.

The big bombshell would be if it isn't for Verizon but Sprint. Imagine the revenue Sprint would get if they nabbed the exclusive CDMA deal. Just because it is CDMA doesn't mean it goes to Verizon.

Agree - iPad could get CDMA in January

Am thinking this rumored purchase would be more for the next gen iPad rather than a phone.

Wow. I think you might be right. iPhone would stay with AT&T, Apple would honor the 5 year exclusivity deal (if there in fact is a 5 year exclusivity deal any more), and Verizon would get iPad.

Since iPad won't make phone calls, the lack of Visual Voicemail is a non-issue. AT&T would still be able to sell iPads with their 3G connectivity, Verizon would have a big Apple + Verizon announcement at CES.

Apple wins by potentially making their 3G iPad available to more customers (although I don't think Verizon phone users are prohibited from using AT&T 3G for iPad.) Verizon wins by getting the Apple halo-of-coolness effect, and can sell the iPad data plan(s) to more customers. AT&T wins by maintaining iPhone 4 exclusivity.

Plus, Apple can once again overshadow CES and all the wannabes and copycats. Steve seems to hate any and all trade shows, even Macworld, so stealing the thunder from everyone else at CES is a bonus.

I hope this is true for all the customers and Apple. Those of us who are happy with AT&T can stay and the ones that are ready to go back to VZW can do so.

It'll be a huge win for Apple and have them move even higher up in market share. The question now will be which phone is faster and which company will push their data network the fastest. Let's not forget the potentially better rate plans... We can hope right? :D

AT&T does have one thing correct though. People will not jump ship in droves. AT&T got them all to buy the i4 early and locked them in. Most will stay because of service agreements and such. After that though... I'd say 35% of the current iPhone owners will defect to VZW. I hope AT&T takes notice.

VZW with Cheaper plan? Doubtful. I see At&t being more aggressive if anything. This will be like shooting fish in a bowl for VZW. I do wonder what the data speeds will be like.

Timing is everything...

If Apple had created the Verizon-iphone at the initial launch of the iphone 4 in June, I am 100% certain there would have been a mass exodus from ATT for the millions of us whose contracts were at the end of our 2 year commitment with ATT and continue to be dissatisfied with the crappy connectivity.

psh big deal, what can chinese hackers do with my social security number and my mothers maiden name anyways

Doesn't matter what the rumors are. When the iPhone becomes non-exclusive with AT&T, you better believe Steve will announce it. Count on it.

I like how AT&T's stance is that they have buried their customers so deep in cancelation fees that their customers have no choice but to stay. Not that any other carrier is different, it just shows that they know without those fees, they would be screwed.

As a CPA who has written a 10-Q this is one of the most misleading statements I have seen in a document like this. Because of the ability to sell my AT&T phone on places like Ebay it makes this statement really untrue. Also even if it cost someone a fee in the $300 range to cancel a contract it won't prevent people from doing it if they perceive, correctly or incorrectly, that their cell service would be significantly better by switching carriers. This is the biggest issue AT&T has with losing exclusivity. Perception is reality. Whether people here want to ever admit or not most people you talk to believe Verizon has better cell service then AT&T. I have had an Iphone since day one and I believe it. Most of my co-workers believe it.

Thats awesome that people will have a choice, but I'll stick with AT&T. I don't know if i'm just one in a million, but I've always had great service and reliable 3G 97% of the time. The only time I went on EDGE for more than ten minutes or so was in the Nevada desert.

With my 25% discount and reliable 3G (for me at least) I'll be staying with AT&T.

Hopefully Jobs announces the iPhone on all 4 major carriers and phones can be unlocked like the iPad. I think the iPad being unlocked is a way for Apple to tip their hats that they will not make the same mistake again...

Carrier locking is a restriction from the carrier, not Apple.

Apple sells tons of iDevices that aren't carrier locked. As a matter of fact, it is illegal to sell carrier locked devices in some markets (e.g., Belgium).

You do realize that there are other countries besides the United States, don't you? And that many of them have different regulations? Anyone who reads this forum or other Apple rumors sites should be aware that carrier locking is not a requirement. As a matter of fact, you can just go to Canada and get an unlocked phone.

Yeah, I've had 3G kick into Edge while driving south of Virginia. For what it might do, I've been using the AT&T 'Mark the Spot' app to draw more attention to 3G dead-spots.

3G coverage seems to be improving, albeit incrementally.

I wish there were an app which could piggyback off of Verizon's network in spotty areas - just a thought. ;)

Ummm... why are you worried about 3G while you're DRIVING???

Yes, it's the subject that's been beaten to death: a Verizon iPhone.
Of course, Macrumors had nothing to do with that.

At this point, I hope you guys finally get the iPhone on Verizon. I couldn't care less about the carrier or AT&T; I just want , for the sake of the rest of the world, to stop hearing about it.
THANK YOU.

Prediction: The iPhone experience on Verizon will be the same as it is on AT&T. Some people will get good reception, some will get lousy and be very vocal about it. Just take the complaints about reception in New York or San Francisco and replace the city names with two major metropolitan areas that are Verizon-heavy instead.

I am not sure why soon many of you guys this apple is somehow married to att for life!? You guys are foolish;)
Give the man a kewpie doll. It's a change in one of the damn radios, not a redesign of the whole instrument. And contracts don't usually run in perpetuity.

It would also blunt some of the thrust of Android if iPhone users had a choice of carriers. Apple may be content to grab and hold its premium niche, but the media will have a field day ascribing momentum to Google on the day Android surpasses iPhone in market share (by any of several US/world/units/usage/apps/etc. metrics, one or two already reached, e.g., http://www.thedailybeast.com/cheat-...-iphone/smartphone-wars/?cid=topic:mainpromo4). Delaying that day is clearly in their interest.

One Q. tho' (scuse if it's answered in the thread): the GSM version is commonly touted as a world phone. So the implication is a Verizon CDMA v. would be much less usable/useful outside of the US&A than an ATT GSM, yes, no, sort of?? Not that that would deter me. I'm happy to consistently be able to make calls here.

As a verizon user (good coverage and no ATT at my house), I know where my phone will and won't work. I think most do. If I'm heading out of the country, I check to see if it's covered. If not, I make other arrangements. I'm more concerned about how well my phone works in the places I frequent 95% of the year. I for one hope that they do an iphone for verizon, but I'm not holding my breath. I'll keep using my ipod touch for now.

I have this feeling the new Verizon network iPhone 4 will sport a Qualcomm or Broadcom chipset that can do both CDMA 2000 and LTE digital cellphone network support, since Verizon will start rolling out LTE starting late this year.

Please get the iPhone, Verizon

I hope Verizon does get the iPhone, so then the damn AT&T towers aren't so over-stuffed, then I won't have to have so many horrible sound quality issues.

Hopefully it will be at least dual-band otherwise for those of us who travel to UK/Europe you're kinda hosed.
I currently have a verizon Blackberry, which is quad-band so works fine wherever I am. I don't want to have to stop, think and research availability whenever I leave the country.
