Awful comment, no offense. I paid for my iPhone X outright so I can afford it. But I just don’t think about myself like you do.

I cant afford a Bentley but I'm not crying to Bentley asking why they aren't thinking about me. Get over yourself. Are you that ignorant? Apple is a luxury brand and it's not made for every wallet. Simple as that.

Apple is simply buying market share. Although they're probably the only company in the position to be able to make this move.

I am totally with you, looking for a Mini 4 replacement, which my wife just loves. And uses as an inseparable travel companion.

However, it looks dim, as Cook and company think large formats are the base standard for both phones and tablets, even for those, like my wife, that have small hands.

I know many would appreciate a refreshed iPad mini, but I think the reality is is that larger iPhones has ultimately replaced the iPad mini due to how they have grown exponentially in size. I the believe the iPhone Plus has really conflicted with the iPad mini and I think Apple wants the larger, more expensive iPads to be the primary.

I do like that they offered a $329 iPad into their lineup for a starting point for those who do not have an appreciation or need for the more expensive Pro models.

Not a single bit of this matters. I know several people with Samsung devices which at one point had GREAT specs, only to be completely abandoned within 6 months and be slow as molasses. Android on a tablet is junk, Google doesn't care one iota about it and that should be plain as day, they don't even produce a tablet anymore! The Pixel C hasn't been in stock now for who knows how long.

Android can be great on a phone, but it is dead in the water on a tablet.

Oh yes, it does! Speak for yourself, I know three kids who have Samsung tablets and are definitely happy with them.

We got our 3 and 4 year olds each an iPod touch. Cheaper than any iPad
32GB touch is $199. 32GB iPad lists at $329, but is often on sale. We got a black friday one for $249. That extra $50 for way bigger screen, newer processer, etc is so easily worth it. Even the iPad mini 128GB can often be had on sale for $299 or less (literally same price as the 128GB touch). The only reason to get a touch is if you truly need something that small/portable.

On topic..
I have the 10” Pro, and while I love it, it’s not 3x more awesome than the budget iPad. I’m really liking this split with budget iPad vs Pro because the budget models are still fantastic tablets. An even lower MSRP next year, and assuming also a reasonable spec bump with no other fanfare, makes for even more greatness. iPads are amazing first computers for kids, before they need to be on the cell plan with phones. Portable movie player for trips, gaming device, own-room tv, facetime, email... it does all their tech/entertainment needs in one device that is getting very affordable.

So a $180 iPad with first or second generation iPad's hardware?

Not sure if this was sarcasm, actual speculation, or just being funny ... ;)

... but, I'd imagine they want to control costs, maintain 64bit procs, and have some EOS, and we'd have to project out to 2018 SOC development, (A12/A12X[?]), figure out how much "legacy" product is going to be supported. Looks like A10 variants will be around for a while with the ATV4K (and knowing that product cycle), they seem to keep about 3 generations around (A9 is in the 6S, SE still being sold new). So my guess is it's an A10 based device :D

If true, I would have no choice but to finally update my parents iPad 2. I suggested updating them with 2017 iPad, but they weren’t really interested.

This of course assumes this 2018 iPad would be both better and cheaper than the 2017 iPad
If they really can still handle using an iPad 2 (i still have and regularly use a spare 2 in addition to my new iPad), i suspect they aren’t really using it for much. Because the 2 crawls and crashes soooo much. They probably just don’t need an iPad at all. For legit iPad users, i cannot fathom using a 2 vs $250-300 (depending on sale) to the model which is night and day a vastly better experience.

I think Apple need to have a bit of a product cull on the iOS lineup. So many iPhone options these days plus still at least 4 iPads available wherever you go and that’s before you factor in the capacity and colour options! Although a new iPod touch wouldn’t hurt ;-)

The point is, iPads are in that strange position that if someone already has a decent laptop and smartphone, there is a very little benefit for owning one in many cases.
The "strange postion" is totally anecdotal.

Well, since they raised prices on certain iPad's AFTER they started selling them, I think they burned a few people.

This might be a way to try to soothe over that burn?

snip...I understand people have a preference for software, just like they do for favorite colors. That doesn't make android junk, just different.
Android on a tablet is different alright, and not in a good way.

2017: Maybe Android tablet apps will be better this year
Why Android Tablet Apps Suck and the iPad Wins: An Illustrated Guide:

iPads are still the better bedroom 'computers' and for most leisure travel also beat laptops.
Yeah, I’m moving toward iPads, not away from them. I may sell my 2015 MBP, because it seems like too valuable an item to let go to waste, and I haven’t used it in the month since I got the 12.9. I teach online, so, the iPad Pro is everything I need.. video conference and the pencil for white boarding. And I use my air2 as a replacement for books or printed reference documents while teaching. I’m enjoying this setup so much, and it’s even better because I travel a lot.

I hope they don't kill the Mini. It's the perfect form factor for my son, and I still see A LOT of these on planes... I bought a Fire Tablet as a cheap second kids device, and it was too awful and slow and jittery even for me to expose my offspring to! I sent that garbage back. The OS didn't bother me too much... maybe with a few more Fire OS updates and another hardware revision, it'll get better. Until then, Apple, please don't kill the Mini. Give us another update...

I've got an iPad 2. When it's not collecting dust I let guests that I don't want to hover around for too long use it. Sometimes they get frustrated with the lag and crashes and leave. So, it has its use. ;)

I’m guessing they will bump the 2017 to an A10 and drop the price, then? But it is interesting to see Apple have finally cottoned on that market share does matter at least a little!

The problem can be solved much more easily in a different way, with much better "App Discovery" for iPad apps !

The apps are out there (on the iOS App Store), Apple has just done a Piss Poor job recommending the better ones !

But that's what happens when Phil Schiller let's his grand kids make ALL the app recommendations !

Apple doesn't recommend Unique & Innovative apps, 'cause of who makes the choices for them !

Their "process" is flawed, and needs to be Fixed ASAP !

Exactly how many app success stories have there been under Tim Cook's 5+ years at the helm ??? iPad OR iPhone ???

I think this shows how much margin Apple has on the iPhone. No reason besides Greed to sell that at those high costs. Understandably from company perspective.

The margins on iPhone have held steady around 40% for years. Hardly excessive or greedy. There's probably a bit more profit in iPhone X, but Apple deserves it for creating an outstanding futuristic best-in-class product.

Wow.
6 year old iPad.
Hope you're around in 6 years to tell us how well your 6 year old 2017 Amazon Fire HD 10 holds up.
snip...Was gifted the new 2017 Amazon Fire HD 10 ...
FYI: If your guest are there for your 6 year old iPad might be time to reevaluate why you let them enter in the first place.

Give those same three children an iPad and you'll never seem them with that Android tablet again.:p

I am guessing they probably use the browser and little else, or one, maybe two games. Unless its testing a tablet to check durability kids are not too picky over what they use.
