The only reason their products aren't considered "insanely good" is because they are lost in the huge number of products that copy them.

With regard to mediocre TV Shows and movies, that's just a matter of taste, and they have made some pretty darn top-class movies and TV Shows. It's all dependent on your taste, and particularly bias.
I entreat you to look at some of the ads for Apple products from 1998-2010 (or 1978-1988 for that matter). And, you'll get what I mean.

There's no pizazz anymore to the Apple product line. It's all cookie cutter. Just the way an operations guy (like Cook) would run a tech company. The way he's forcing unready AR / VR goggles out before they are "Apple Quality" should tell you everything you need to know about how things are now being run. He wants the product; screw the niceties that make it Apple.

And, I think most people would agree, most of Apple's shows and movies are bombs with a few good ones sprinkled in between.

I need season two of Severance so bad.

Speaking of - there was an “email” from a former severed Lumon employee; not sure where I found it. Can anyone link it if they have it. I want to dive down the rabbit hole of speculation more.

Apple should just buy AMC! And it is a Meme stock too! And then give free Medium popcorn if you have an iPhone!

Can I please get a 15” MBA and new iPhone Mini before you fully morph into Paramount Pictures, or Sony Music? …. Or whatever you are doing here now..
They are diversifying the company so they aren't reliant on a phone like they were for many years. They can still make phones and computers at the same time they invest in other projects.

If this will bring better quality movies to Apple TV, I am all for it! (unless Apple releases movies first at theater and then to Apple TV months later... if so, I will not be a happy customer)
Yeah, that would somewhat diminish the value of subscribing to Apple TV if you had to wait 45 days after Apple releases the movie in the theaters.

Meanwhile actual software companies are spending their money on generative AI like crazy. But Apple wants to make a play for the Oscars.
1) Apple isn't a software company so not sure what you were going for there

2) They can do multiple projects at once. Just because you, I and others here don't know about it, doesn't mean they aren't working on it.

Tom Hanks was very very annoyed about Greyhound not getting a theatrical release. I guess it's that view that has helped guide Apple to this decision.
I wouldn’t say “very very annoyed”.
As is the internet’s way, him saying he was “disappointed” exploded into him hating Apple and all they stand for. When, really, he was indeed disappointed that it wasn’t a theatrical release, but he was glad that people were still able to see the movie via Apple TV when there was a very real chance it wouldn’t have seen a release at all.

I can google it and find countless examples of well respected English publications writing "increase spend" in their headlines and bodies, but sure it isn't English.
And one doesn’t even have to go any further than “spend definition” in Google to find spend as a noun (Oxford languages). :)

Yeah. I'm even thinking about cancelling the TV+ subscription ... With Netflix, Disney+, HBO, Showtime and Amazon Prime ... we simply find it not that interesting. Apart from Foundation ... which last episode was 1.5 years ago and TED at a lesser degree ... nothing on it appeals my family.

Honestly I don't see what in the world is Apple or Amazon for that matter are contributing in this space apart having large pockets. Why do tech companies that don't know what to do with so much money always come to this. Microsoft once was on it ... glad they have backtracked.

There is a lot of money in it, that is the reason! People love Entertainment. There have been Rumors that Apple was going to buy Disney. I know Apple wants Pixar back. Steve Jobs sold Pixar to Disney a long time ago!

You will not hear anything from Apple about new products, including AI, until WWDC 2023 in June. Apple never tries to be first to market, they were not first to market with smart phones and look how it worked out for Apple. Microsoft killed their phone a long time ago, after it died a slow death, and it was released before the iPhone.

Wow - didn't realize you had an inside line on 1) that Cook is "forcing" the release of an unannounced product and 2) that a product that no one outside Apple has seen isn't "Apple Quality."

What planet are you on?

Apple made history in 2022, landing three Academy Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for CODA, with the first-ever win by a streamer for Best Picture, alongside awards for Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur, and Best Adapted Screenplay for Siân Heder.

In 2023, he Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences honors Apple Original Film The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse with the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film.

Apple’s global phenomenon “Ted Lasso”. on Apple TV+, joins ranks of the most celebrated comedies in history with back-to-back Emmy wins for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Forcing a product out is a good way to push the envelope and get people out of their comfort zones. Next you will be saying Apple does not take risks and they are taking too long!

On the other hand, Best Picture Winner The Whale is believed to have a budget of only about $1.5M, so $1 Billion could fund a very high volume of "Best Picture" movies like that one.
Gauging anything on the best picture winners makes absolutely no sense. Hollywood has a long history of selecting the wrong picture for this award. Most notorious is 1999 when Harvey Weinstein managed to schmooze "Shakespeare in Love" for the award over "Saving Private Ryan". Disgraceful. If Apple cared about getting this award, they'd have to have a huge "for your consideration" budget for the targeted flick.

"create cultural events"? Like garage sales and bingo nights?
Historically, this has meant events to influence voters for awards -- like the famous harveyweinsteining of "Shakespeare in Love" into the 1999 Best Picture award. Never in the history of Hollywood have so many bathrooms and kitchens been remodeled for one movie's victory. I fondly hope that is not what Apple is talking about.
