Given how highly Tim Cook speaks of Beats Music, I'm sure it's going to be Apple-fied and rebranded. If it remains a subscription service, hopefully it'll be bundled with iTunes Match.

they acquired beats just for promotional purpose for apple...and now beats are no longer in need.

Echo others and say that Apple is probably going to incorporate it into iTunes. What would be really amazing is if we somehow ended up with an iTunes subscription service.

Could be a mistake. Bet many used the service because it wasn't apple and many of them probably have no idea apple bought beats. They should/could have ran it alongside iTunes, different wrapper for same service underneath.

they're probably doing some sort of new music store (for amateur musicians). Kind of like what the App Store did for amateur developers.

makes total sense since they were focused on the curation

Spotify lives on!

I guess I will continue to use Spotify! I have been a Spotify user for 3+ years and love the live sessions, music collection, etc. I am starting to wonder why they bought Beats at all?? The headphones are never going to become "Apple" branded so what else do they have to offer???

This makes no sense... they JUST added a Beats Music app to Apple TV. Why bother if they're just going to shut it down?

I think they just wanted to get Beats users completely on board with the product before rolling it into an Apple streaming service. Unless sunsetting Beats was a spur-of-the-moment decision based on low revenue or something.

Well this sucks. I thought Apple wouldn't be a jerk and kill Beats like that, maybe they just want more money and they didnt profit off beats, or they just want to integrate Beats with future Apple devices or something.

Even so, they should have at least kept the brand alive.

You're getting worked up over a rumour.

That said, even if this rumour was true, it makes sense in one way. They still haven't rolled iTunes Radio out to many countries, probably due to a slow license negotiation process. To need to do that for two similar services would not make any sense at all.

Here in Canada, we still don't have iTunes Radio or Beats Music. I'm sure many countries can say the same. So, Mr. American, enjoy it while you have it. :p

I feel conflicted. I really like the app. It looks much better than the Music app. I hope all of my profile information transfers seamlessly (Apple services, we'll see...). At the same time, if it becomes part of iTunes, it will be a lot more integrated into the phone.

It'll probably be rebranded and the current subscribers moved over to the new service. That's why it makes sense to continue promoting it.

They're going to incorporate it into iTunes and call it iTunes Radio+, the first iTunes subsciption service:D

They will merge it with their own service, not surprised at this move. Everyone should have seen this coming.

Sort of odd, not so much from 30,000 feet, but from the standpoint of it feeling like a reversal. As pointed out, it was only recently that Apple put the Beats app in an extremely high profile position. To now say we're shutting it down? I wonder if the response to said positioning didn't result in any meaningful traction with new subs?

Prediction: Apple will ultimately fold what we today think of as Beats (human-curated, super smart music streaming subscriptions) into a larger media subscription service ala Netflix or Amazon Prime. Could also be packaged with iCloud Match, iCloud Drive storage, etc.

To the naysayers who say that Apple makes too much selling content to push paid subscription models...I say just wait.

Apple's move was very Microsoft-esque: just buy out the rival, keep its best assets and drown everything else out of the market.

calm down

Seems like they are just going to fold it into iTunes Radio and rebrand/relaunch it. "iTunes Something."

Their music services are pretty scatterbrained and un-apple like right now (I think they got caught off-guard by the rapid rise of streaming services). iTunes downloads, iTunes Radio, Beats streaming, iTunes Match etc. They need to sit down and come up with a clear strategy and clear options for consumers.

Between that and their decision to make iPhoto for iOS stop working as soon as you update to iOS 8 without any warnings...

I was confused by that. But I also hated the fact that iPhoto used to be separate app (with a separate library) on iOS instead of being integrated into the photos app. So that is actually an improvement in my book. As is the integration of Beats music into the regular Music app.

Not really too shocking to me. If this is true, I'm sure they'll be rolling it into iTunes and an Apple branded streaming service. Tim Cook seemed thrilled with the service during his interview with Charlie Rose, and why completely discontinue it one way or another.

This makes more sense to me, tbh. I doubt they're just going to shutter it and forget about it.

they acquired beats just for promotional purpose for apple...and now beats are no longer in need.

Apple did not need hep with promotion. 10 million iPhone 6 sales in one weekend? That had nothing to do with them having bought Beats. We haven't seen what their plan with Beats is yet. Could be bigger than any of us have imagined. Or I could be totally wrong and the buyout was simply to get the people/talent/knowledge.
