Apple Reportedly Prepping Revamped Apple TV: iPhone OS, Cloud-Based Storage, $99 Price Point?

The cloud is crucial

If this device proves to be real and Apple actually allows for you to stream your purchases from their servers on an as needed basis that would be an incredible improvement from what we have now. It would also be a HUGE boon to the iTunes Store. If you could stream your purchases to your AppleTV, iPhone, iPad, etc. can you imagine how many more purchases people would do through Apple? That would more than make up for the $99 price point.

Well, it sounds like this thing will be keeping all the video in one place. It's on the computer instead of at the TV, but why should that matter?

The "I'm buying a mini instead of an AppleTV" crowd is going to shrink very rapidly if this thing really does cost $99.

Good, then Apple will hopefully kill the Mini off and bring in a midtower(ie G4 Cube spot) to replace it.

Gaming Console

So Apple fell into a heap load of money with the ipod touch and games (it was just supposed to be an internet attached device/music player). Does anyone else see this as Apple's foray into the living room console wars?

How about using the ipod touch/iphone as the controller like what has been demonstrated with the ipad. Change the resolution of the games and now a third avenue to sell applications through!!!

1080P is great, but what about optical digital audio? I'm worried that if it is as small as they say they some of the current AppleTV's ports are going to vanish.

Apple playing software games again

no reason why this functionality can't go into an iPhone or iPod Touch. but they are going to make an extra device with limited functionality to try to get you to buy something else

Apple still has a lot to learn...

Netflix still owns this market. While a hardware upgrade, price drop, and streaming is a step in the right direction, the iTunes movie/tv model can't hold a candle to netflix streaming now on most Bluray players, gaming consoles, set-top boxes and even some televisions. If the next ATV has netflix streaming, access to all of my iTunes library (via lala aquision) and web access, then it might be worth buying for $99. And who knows? All of those things are possible.

Number one thing keeping me from buying an TV is having to sync it with a computer. I don't want all my video in 2 places, i want it at the TV.

If it can't do this I'm going to buy a mini.

Its called 'backup'.

wile I'm excited about the news, I have a feeling that my current Apple TV will not get the next update and if I want to take advantage of the new software, I'm going to have to buy another Apple TV, though at the rumored $99, it may not be that hard to justify an upgrade.

Wow. Someday EVERYTHING will be an iPhone.

I wouldn't confuse the iPhone 4.0 OS on the iPhone with the iPhone OS on the Apple TV. The Apple TV would be running the iPad version of iPhone OS 4.0.

And the device itself. Just look at it like a small adapter.

That is very reasonable speculation. You'd expect it then.

As a long-time AppleTV user, I'm eager to see the direction Apple takes with the platform.

If nothing else, this shows us the real potential of the 4th-gen iPhone. Wow - 1080P out.

If the rumor is true I'm betting this will be announced and acutally available BEFORE the Google TV is. Don't think for a second that Steve Jobs and company don't know what Google is up to on every front. They didn't become the most valuable tech company (God, it feels good to be able to say that now) by being stupid or lazy. It won't be long before we get a Jobs manifesto declaring Blu-ray dead and buried by the cloud.

How could this only cost $99??? The iPhone 3GS costs $179 to manufacture as it is. Removing the LCD and Digitizer would only knock off $36 from that. So that's a $143 manufacturing cost!

100% agree :)

Maybe SJ sees other ways to make money of this and this is almost cost price (with extra volume). It would be a killer price if true!

Wait ... what are we saying? Walmart have the 3Gs for $97 now don't they?

Goodbye Microsoft, it's all about google and apple now. Seriously, I think this decade with be the demise of MS. I am definitely excited for the products that will come from this competition. I love both google and apple, and I love their ideas for TV. I have been waiting for something to replace cable/dish/satellite or what have you, and the new apple tv/google tv seems to be the replacement. Apple tv in it's current form is frankly a waste of money, but if it turns into a viable replacement for current tv services I am sold. Tv right now is just a fancier way to do what we have always done. Internet tv seems to be the future.

HDMI carries digitaL audio, so does Displayport. What's your point?

I posted this over in the other thread but... what if Apple managed to wrestle the content providers into offering a subscription service on top of that? Instant competitior to the cable networks and removes the need for a PVR service for a great many people. Add in local streaming from iTunes to allow use of any media you have on your home network and... well, that's a very VERY strong product.

And then, just for a giggle, thrown in app purchases to allow gaming on the TV as well.

I hear ya.... I have a current AppleTV running XBMC and I have a 2TB NAS on the network. I hardwired everything and put the Broadcom Crystal HD Card for Hardware-HD playback, it works very well playing everything from youtube, mp4, to 1080p mkv files... I just wonder how stuck this new device will be in regard to "Apple Video Only"

With programs like Boxee, the current ATV is really an online digital media hub... Don't want to see the new one scrap all that.

Correct. I was going to get a mac mini to run boxee. I need to stream hulu & netflix

Yup I hear. I would be disappointed if the older (larger storage) Applt TV's do not get the software update as well. Just got mine @ X-Mas
