NYC has a lot of very good engineers, and it’s exceptionally easy to recruit out of towners to move there (I am a transplant from Ohio myself). Makes total sense - they were missing out on too many good people.

They should look into being the prime tenant for the yet unbuilt Two World Trade Center. It is supposed to be an 81 story tall, 2.8 million square foot building.
If Apple needs 500,000 sq ft, that's almost 1/5th of its total space- more than enough to get construction moving.

There is lots of talent in many different places . Frankly, if spent a higher percentage of the lease/rent money on salaries, talent would go where you reasonably asked it to go .

When Silicon Valley started off it wasn’t a metropolis . Bell labs , Watson research labs , xerox PARC , .... all not major metropolises.

This probably has far more to do with hipster imagery than in getting substantive work done .

I hear your point, and it makes sense for something the size of the existing office, but... 5,000 employees for hipster imagery?

I'm not saying talent doesn't move, either. It would be more of a way to just get the talent in the door without asking them to relocate right off the bat. Many people are fairly loyal to where they live, for any number of reasons. Like, our executive director is leaving and probably taking a huge pay cut to live closer to his kids/family. I personally know (and count myself among) many engineers and others who have never considered moving to silicon valley for work simply because they do not want to live there.

I’d like an Apple store in the old James Farley post office (with extra space to accommodate office staff).

Not that we need another Apple store in Manhattan, but it would be great to have one within walking distance of my trains a la Grand Central and Barclays.

I know this is about office space alone, but...

Which Store is the one with the cubic glass entrance at the street level? I've always wanted to visit that one.
5th Avenue store. They’re currently renovating it so the store is in the FAO Schwartz building behind the cube...
