Use your phone camera (or even a real camera) to take pictures if you want a rear facing camera. I don't know why people are so eager to hold a 10" iPad in the air to take pictures. If anything, Apple could focus on making transferring photos between the iPhone and iPad as painless as possible.

I have to agree with this, as an Amateur Photographer I can’t see how you can get any decent shots holding the iPad....

1 x front facing 6mp camera for facetime
2 x rear facing 9mp cameras for stereoscopic photography
2 x side facing 3mp cameras for watching people on the train

it would also be cool to have a camera to monitor what my feet are doing and another facing skywards keeping an eye out for airbourne toilet evacuations, i have already lost two ipads to falling frozen turds.

:d:d:d:d:d:d:d

No way Ipad is getting a back camera...

1/4 of the people will drop and brake their ipads in less than 2 months.

:/

I'm still amazed how many people still don't GET IT.

They keep on about "I'd not take an iPad on a Photo Shoot" type of stupid comments.

Well of course not, and you'd look a fool if you took an iPhone out with you specifically to take photo's with also.

It would be for spontaneous, quick, what you have to hand NOW type use.

You Dog, Cat, Son Daughter may be doing something funny, or you may be out in a coffee shop and a UFO flies over! or something happens NOW.

The iPad is the device that you have to hand NOW, it's being used to read your book, to browse the web, to play the game.

The event is happening NOW in front of your face, you click on the button raise the iPad up and capture the moment.

You don't say, oh hang on a moment, I'll go and find my camera, or hang on I'll get get my iPhone out of my bag.

You use the camera on the iPad to capture the moment now.

Thats the great use the Camera can be.

No taking it out for the day on a photo shoot!

Its strange that the current iPad didn't ship with camera, actually. Not sure how newsworthy this article is, why would one of Apple's suppliers have a comment that would break their confidentiality agreement?

to each their own

I would be interested to hear others views on this:

Let's just say for one moment, we assume the iPad will have both a front and rear camera.

It's a bit of a guess, but let's just assume that for one moment.

How would you feel if Apple fitted a lower quality camera unit into the iPad than they have already fitted in the iPhone4 ?

Personally I'd not be happy as I would like to think Apple would see the iPad as their "Premier Device" and not 2nd in line to the more important iPhone.

Would you be upset if the iPhone 4 camera was better than the iPad2 model?

Just for the record. I have zero interest in a front facing camera. I will never ever make a FaceTime call.

Assuming a front camera is fitted, whilst I will be happy it's there, I can think of no current use I can make of it.
A rear mounted Camera I can see myself using from time to time.

If the iPad2 only gets a front camera for facetime I will be very dissapointed, as I say I have no use for it ever.

I could care less about a rear facing camera on an iPad. I actually think it is silly and users will look even more odd taking a photo with the rear facing camera but I am different then you and most I guess. I have my slr and iPhone (for in a pinch on the spot) photographs but I'd like to see a front facing camera as I do use facetime from time to time with family members while I travel over seas or away from their home state.

Yea, rear facing!

I can think of MANY business uses for taking pictures with the iPad (and it damn well better focus close!).
I can only think of one for the front. Really, does the average person over 30 want to video-chat, much less from the under-chin vantage point?

Yes, but just how much less could you care?

I don't either. But once the cameras are in place, developers will probably find a use for them we haven't thought of yet. And I figure that's Apple's thinking, too.

If anything, Apple could focus on making transferring photos between the iPhone and iPad as painless as possible.

Yes. Or from any camera, for that matter. Owners of SLRs would really go for this.

Rear facing camera – No
Front facing Camera – Meh
More Ram – Yes, yes, yes!
Better Processor – Yes, yes, yes!

Excellent point.

Being able to take a photo of a document then instantly email that document on would be an excellent use for a rear camera on an iPad in business, given enough resolution and the ability to focus that close.

What's the current method?
Scan the document on a computer, save the document as a file, sync the iPad to the computer and use iTunes to transfer the image onto the iPad.

Very very good point, and excellent for business.

Narrow minded comments

You think the rear camera is only to be used with the Camera application? Think differently. Any application could use the camera to take pictures. How is this useful? I think only imagination is the limit. The most famous example is the FaceTime application.

What I want to know is...

What I'd like to know is why Apple didn't just include a camera in the original iPad. You'd think they'd go for consistency across their product line...they have cameras in almost every other product. I think this was a missed opportunity for Apple...by the time they come out with the iPad2 with a camera there will already be lots of competition. They should have made the iPad a complete no-brainer while there was no competition. I'm sure they discussed the pros and cons of a camera in the iPad...I'd like to be a fly on the wall when that stuff was being discussed. :)

One thing is sure, the back camera on iPad 2 will have HD videorecording. Because they want iMovie on iPad.

Im not sure if they will use the iPhone's 4 camera or iPod's Touch 4G camera.

Editing a Video you have just taken for, perhaps, direct upload to YouTube will be fantastic on a 10" high quality iPad screen.

A decent back camera on iPad would be great. I'd love to use the big iPad screen like the frosted glass finder on a view camera for shooting landscapes and architecture. The problem is that no device like iPhone and iPad has a particularly good camera when compared to even low end dedicated point and shoots, let alone DSLRs.

But remember, it's a gradual path

I'd say the current iPhone4 camera is about as good image wise as the 1st digital compact camera I had about 10 years ago.

Certainly good enough for general online use I'd say and 6"x4" or 7"x5" normal photo printouts.

When you consider the tiny size of the whole unit it's quite an achievement.

This shows a couple good examples of how to safely use a rear-camera on a tablet.

In fact, the more they can make the iPad more like a MacBook (a "real" computer with a fantastic touch interface) the better. :D

Seriously, if the new iPad does include front and rear cameras, I would bet anything that a majority of users would utilize the rear camera for photos far more than they would utilize the front camera for video chats. Video chatting is cool, but it's not practical in most circumstances. Almost every iPhone owner I know has upgraded to version 4, and none of them use the video chat feature. Hell, the tech has been available on computers for the last 10 years, and most people still only rarely use it for special occassions. Video chat has its place, but in most situations it is easier and more appropriate to go voice only.

The iPad is bigger than your average phone, but it isn't that large. It would be easy to use as a camera, and many people might find a 10" view finder appealing in certain situations. Imagine recording HD video on a 10" screen. Plus, there could be some cool augmented reality opportunities here.

Either way, I already have an iPad and since I barely ever use the camera on my 3GS, and obviously have little interest in video chat, this feature isn't a very important one for me.

This is the thing.

I'm not sure about the USA, but in the UK we have had the ability to make Video calls for years and years. And almost no-one ever uses it. They just don't need/want video when making a phone call.

OMG, you're breaking my heart! You say that Steve Jobs didn't invent/innovate the video phone. Oh heavens!

All sarcasm aside, front and back cameras for the iPad is fine. Sure, I'm not going to bring it with me for a photo shoot, but just casual use. Like suppose I'm looking at a new house and my spouse can't be there to see it. I can flip the camera and give him/her a tour. Or, your dog is doing a funny trick and you want you friend to see it. Flip the camera around during FaceTime. While I don't see it a a primary camera, it would be cool for videos or FaceTime.
