Apple Reportedly Selects Camera Lens Supplier for Second-Generation iPad

Sounds great!

I don't want a high-resolution camera on an iPad... I want one on my camera! All I would ever want to do on an iPad is video chat or take a quick pic.

I don't know why so many people want high-end features everywhere? Can you imagine trying to take pictures with something the size of an iPad other than quick snapshots? One good resolution camera on the front is more than enough for this device. Otherwise... get a camera if you want more.

Because if I'm paying the premium price for Apple I want the premium hardware and software to go along with it. :apple:

People lack imagination. Rear camera is not intended to displace your beloved 18 MP dSLR. Aside from casual phtottaking, it could be useful snapping diagrams in lectures, used for augmented reality apps, or for something you personally don't think of. Why the fuss? Apple decides to include a camera on the iPad is not going to prevent them from adding other features, change the weight in a significant way, or somehow make your current iPad less useful.

Nail on the head.

I'm still amazed how many people still don't GET IT.

They keep on about "I'd not take an iPad on a Photo Shoot" type of stupid comments.

Well of course not, and you'd look a fool if you took an iPhone out with you specifically to take photo's with also.

It would be for spontaneous, quick, what you have to hand NOW type use.

You Dog, Cat, Son Daughter may be doing something funny, or you may be out in a coffee shop and a UFO flies over! or something happens NOW.

The iPad is the device that you have to hand NOW, it's being used to read your book, to browse the web, to play the game.

The event is happening NOW in front of your face, you click on the button raise the iPad up and capture the moment.

You don't say, oh hang on a moment, I'll go and find my camera, or hang on I'll get get my iPhone out of my bag.

You use the camera on the iPad to capture the moment now.

Thats the great use the Camera can be.

No taking it out for the day on a photo shoot!

Absolutly right, but Ibet there will still be more posts about using iPad as camera being a foolish idea.

I would guess they only put a VGA quality in as a front facing camera as it's for Facetime, lower res, lower bandwidth needed. No use putting a 5mp front facing camera when it will choke trying to feed that much data anyhow. As far as a rear facing camera, not even sure the point of it being much better than the front. It's not like this is some point and shoot camera, people have cell phones that will take better pics, easier to handle and with a led flash.

I find Facetime nothing more than a novelty anyhow, so I'd rather see Apple focus on memory, storage space and something more useful than cameras, but whatever floats their boat.

I don't have a camera on my phone.

I also agree I want more Memory and everything else :)

I suppose the screen res is the most obvious thing as a in your face improvement. That and storage space.
Only issue is going to be if the radically increased the storage space how long would a sync become?

But remember, it's a gradual path

I'd say the current iPhone4 camera is about as good image wise as the 1st digital compact camera I had about 10 years ago.

Certainly good enough for general online use I'd say and 6"x4" or 7"x5" normal photo printouts.

When you consider the tiny size of the whole unit it's quite an achievement.

Right. But the limitation isn't in the sensor. The limitation is the size of the lens. As long as it's the size of a pencil eraser it'll be of far lower quality than dedicated cameras. Less glass and smaller aperture. You can't get around the physics.

No doubt. The reason I mentioned using it as a view camera is because of the size of the screen. I don't think it's realistic to expect the camera to ever rival a DSLR or even a good point and shoot, as per my statement above.

And you don't sound like you need an I Pad. After all you probably have a laptop that can do the work of an I Pad and they only have a camera on the front. I hate people's "good enough" ideas. My definition of good enough doesn't even close to cover my wife, let alone a world of Apple users.

Actually...

I would be interested to hear others views on this:

Assuming a front camera is fitted, whilst I will be happy it's there, I can think of no current use I can make of it.
A rear mounted Camera I can see myself using from time to time.

===================

No, you could only see yourself using a front mounted camera. That's why it's there.

Sorry, couldn't resist :)

This is the thing.

I'm not sure about the USA, but in the UK we have had the ability to make Video calls for years and years. And almost no-one ever uses it. They just don't need/want video when making a phone call.

I heard the same about the iPhone4 only recently. About not having ever seen anyone using the video called (Face Time)

Naturally we can all see the main uses.

Granny seeing the grandchildren from hundreds of miles away.

Perhaps a Birthday or Christmas hello call.

Boy and girl friend early relationship, I love you, video calls.

Porn!

But not general use. As I say we've had mobile video calls for years and years and you could even buy video landline phones.

It just does not seen a typical thing to use in day to day life.

Perhaps there are some people who have their webcam on all the time every evening also? But not most people.

For me anyway, and I know we all have different uses, I will never use FaceTime. I've never owned a Webcam either.

A rear camera would get occasional use. Not a lot, but occasional.

As I'm more lightly to have the iPad already in my hands than my camera, if something happens and I can just raise the iPad and video the family pet doing something funny then I'll use what I have to hand, and as I say that's more lightly to be the iPad.

Would I go out on a photo shoot for the day and take the iPad, no of course not, that would be stupid. In the same way I'd not take phone out on a photo shoot either.

If I wanted to go out and take photo's then I'd take a camera.

That's not to say I'd not like a nice camera on the back on an iPad.

To be able to take a video on the iPad, edit it on some new video editing software on the 10" screen then uploads direct to YouTube without any messing about with adaptors or convertors will be great

I would tend to agree with many of these types of posts. I think there is a VERY small niche that really uses video calling but these features tend to go unused in general. A front-facing camera would be a nice edition but it would get very little use by the largest majority of the buying public. A rear facing camera just wouldn't make any sense on the device at all. At least to me.

Oh, I think tons of people would use the front-facing camera to create Fish Eye photos a la "Photo Booth"...

OK, just kidding...I get that video conferencing is not used commonly by a majority of users. But let one user speak up and say that I have small kids and I'm constantly on the road, and a front-facing camera is the one feature I am waiting for. And I'm sure apps will be created using the camera in ways we haven't thought of yet.

Couldn't care less about a rear-facing camera, but the lack of the front-facing was the most important reason that I didn't buy the first-gen iPad and I hope that it is included in the next release!

what the heck do people want rear facing cameras for on the ipad? that's just stupid! whilst i know having both cameras is better than none... what's the point? front facing maybe for facetime and such but to use the ipad for pic taking like they do on iphones???

oh well...

same reason as you see those people who can't sing but they think they can and they join x factor!

to each his own i guess :p

yo, imagine you sittin in starbux, facetiming with your gf and boom! lady gaga enters the starbux and your gf goes 'pics or it never happened'. boom! you tap on the 'switch cameras' button and boom! 100% proof. yo, now does you understand how important rear cam is.

But for now, this is video conferencing which has been around for about a decade and which basically is not a popular form of communication.
It depends on where you work. I've worked at two places where the video conference room was in use for most all of every day.
