Apple Reportedly Slashes iPhone 17 Demand Forecast Amid Rising Costs

I'm not surprised that demand is lower. My first smartphone was the iPhone 4 and every smartphone since has been an iPhone. The iPhone SE3 was the perfect phone for me. Turns 4 next month and I'm looking for something new. The 16e and 17e are to expansive for my and offer more than I need.
Researching the Google Pixel 10a and I'm positively surprised. Flat back without a camera sticking out and right now 409€ on Amazon (here in Germany). That is a fair price.

This makes no sense. I would think they are reducing production to shift it into the upcoming models. The price of the 17 stayed the same and the 18 is not coming out until next year. Now if they plan to increase the price of the 17 I could then see them anticipating a decrease in demand for it.

I have no interest in switching phone OS. But slim phone with a flat back is my dream. I would pay a premium for that
 
As others have noted, probably a price increase incoming before the end of the year.

Demand for replacement batteries will also probably skyrocket 🚀.

I only buy pro models because of the camera's but I am going to review that as I don't take that many photos anyway. I might just switch to standard model as it's a beast.

100% agreed. I traded in my 15Pro (yes, I can hear the moans from others) because I didn't need that extra camera wizardry and I am glad I did. It really has the Pro features (less the extra RAM and camera bells and whistles) but it still is great for me. So what if it can't perform 2 Apple Siri AI functions which seem to me are superfluous. Besides, I got a good trade in for my 15 Pro to get a good price on the 17: those prices won't be seen again! It's a keeper.

It is probably the last of the best base models.

Seems like Apple keynotes used to be aim towards adults when Steve Jobs did it, now they do keynotes all kids like. I agree Android directs are pretty cool to watch

Apple’s net profits are in the mid 20% range. They’re going to go down as a result of an unprecedented increase in memory costs and the current economic environment.

People constantly quote Apple’s gross profit margin, which is an indicator of production margins before total costs are factored. Useful for evaluating production costs, but not for actual financial performance of a company after all costs are applied.

With the bill of materials for the iPhone 18 Pro reported to be significantly higher than the 17 Pro, I could see Apple dropping the 256GB storage option. This would allow them to raise the base price from $1099 to $1299 for 512GB, but it isn't really an increase since $1299 is what a 17 Pro with 512GB costs.

So perhaps Apple will do the same with the iPhone 17, dropping the 256GB model and just offering the $999 512GB option. No longer producing the 256GB option is going to cut production (and, by extension, demand). That way they set up the expectation of a ~$1000 base price for the iPhone 18 (with 512GB) this Spring.

I traded in my 16 Pro Max for an iPhone 17 because I started getting the phone is getting too hot messages on the Max when using a MagSafe charger. Only cost me $125 to switch (after trade-in value). Not sad about it. I feel the 17 is an overall better phone.

Consumers who are ready for an upgrade should do so to avoid the price hike. This is going to be a minor upgrade…. or wait for the 20th anniversary iPhone next year.

If I do upgrade from the Base 17, I'll wait for the 20th anniversary model and see what it has to offer but right now I'm staying with my Base 17.
 
I think we are looking at this all wrong…. Price of the phone is irrelevant for 95% of the people… It’s all about carrier pricing… Apple will continue to push carriers to eat these costs and incentives upgrades..
The cost of the device doesn’t matter if a AT&T says $10 a month with iPhone 13 or better trade in…. Even if it is for 4 years…
And carriers will be fighting to have the best incentives because this is the one time a year where they can get a huge influx of new customers… iPhone launches moves the needle and sets up that carrier for the year.
Also, we know the game that apple plays.. All of these devices will be hard to get for the first 4-6 months… and then we roll into the holiday season where people are willing to spend.. Apple will artificially create the demand, then force carriers to eat the cost and everybody will still upgrade…
 
I think the fact that 12GB RAM is now the minimum for all Siri functions has potential buyers waiting to see what the 18 looks like, more than any of the other BS this article mused about.
 
One of the sweetest deals right now is the iPhone Air (2025). I’ve seen it on the second hand marked at just 750€. If you don’t need a lot of battery, this device has great specs (12GB of RAM!) and a lightweight design. And given that it has an A19 Pro in it, it will receive iOS updates at least until 2032.

would they go through bad publicity twice instead of once? All the papers wrote about apple price rises (as was expected, unlike microsoft, samsung, etc. prices rising before) and that was bad publicity. Doing it twice instead of once seems like bad business choices. There were rumors that for the iPhone apple would swallow the cost and go for market share giving the stickiness of the platform. Pro and Ultra prices rising is one thing, base model price hikes seem worse... Especially if the older device stays on the market for longer...

Honestly the rumors point to 9GB of RAM for the iPhone 18. I don’t think that Apple will increase the iPhone 18 RAM to 12GB now what the memory prices are that crazy. I’m pretty sure that’s what they intended when they designed the commercial strategy, but the astronomical, giant, titanic price increases of NAND and RAM have made Apple look for a plan B. If they increase the iPhone 18 price a bit too much, they can lose that upper-medium smartphone market.
