The introduction of this product (AR/VR goggles with extreme fidelity) at this time was not apparent to me prior to reading the article linked below.

According to the article, the DoD has been working with MSFT for years now to develop HoloLense into a piece of military gear called Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) to be worn by soldiers in the field to increase their situational awareness. It would show them where they were, where they were headed, could be used as a system to aim their weapons, look at mini drone video in real time, show where friendlies and enemies are etc. Standard equipment for any soldier in a Sci-Fi first person shooter. The capabilities are highly desirable for any military, if they can be made to work.

The program is budgeted at $22billion and is failing because wearing the headsets make the soldiers sick (among other major problems) and the troops refuse to wear them. DoD says that MSFT has a very short time to fix the problems or DoD will look for other vendors to provide them what they want.

This release is AAPL's entry into that race.

High-end or low-end... makes no difference. Still a Niche market. I wish really if Apple had focused on a completely different product this the AR/VR headset 🥽
I don’t think it’s a niche market. These could wind up in every elementary and high school in America n the world! There’s plenty of research and reports that virtual and augmented reality in K-12 improves their learning.

It’s ultimately up to the app developers to get it into every high school in America through development of high end apps.

Here’s one research article:

"Apple's second-generation AR/VR headset will be offered in high-end and low-end versions"

Marketing/Salesmanship 101: NEVER say "low-end." Say "entry level."

I hope we will see an Apple Vision (non pro) in 2025 for europe with cheaper price than the Apple Vision Pro. I want to replace my Quest Pro with it so bad.
