In Europe we get a two year guarantee live span. Apple uses a one year guarantee but was forced to use two years. Isn’t your daughter’s MacBook problem taken care of by the normal quarantee period?
No the Costco warranty on electronics is very short - I think 45 days?

eh, seems like they could test this easily BEFORE putting into the product. Rather than wait a year after assembly. and a Chinese company making sub par components to save money? Them? Nahhhhh...
1) How could they pick it up at build when Apple only just tested them?
2) These are made to Apples specs. It would obviously be their fault too.
3) Every country has manufacturers that at times produce faulty components. Why be sarcastic about a Chinese company doing this? Are you implying something?

The last two Apple products I’ve purchased have minor cosmetic blemishes in the aluminum casing. It’s noticeable to me and I’m borderline on whether I’m going to return it until they can get their manufacturer processes corrected. They make trillions of these things, you’d think they idk have a system or something. Most recently was my iPad Pro M4 ($1200 product that shows up with discoloration on the back)

I think they key points you mentioned were 'minor' and 'cosmetic'

As you said, they make trillions of these things and manufacturing is never perfect. Thats why they have things like binned processors.

Cosmetic blemishes are not covered.

that's cool that you were able to link to the specific part of the article like that. I do think this would be covered as it's due to a defect due to workmanship, which is a covered cosmetic defect. But I don't think I'd be likely to return it over this. although paying a premium should ensure I'm not getting shoddy products. apple should do better, I think we can all agree on that.

When you squeeze your suppliers too much, quality can suffer because they have to make money too. Another example of Tim’s aggressive approach potentially biting him in the Apple.

Everyone knows American products are famous for their low failure rate /s.

But yes, Germany and Japan has delivered many faulty products.

This comment section is hilarious. Anyone with experience in hardware manufacturing, especially in China, knows that this story is a testiment to good quality control, not the opposite.

Not quite sure what you're saying here because for sure, there's a decent amount of sarcasm - certainly in the first two sentences. China is a phenomenal manufacturing hub, to their advantage and equally to their detriment. And for sure, a lot of crap comes out of China, but so does the vast majority of decent things we use.

Strange for the first time I didn’t get AppleCare. I bought a MacBook Air M1 from Costco and a block of the screen has gone bad.

Contact Costco 1-866-861-0450 - they double manufacturer's warranties on items they sell.

It certainly isn't a fan bearing. Probably bad metallurgy in the hinge if it takes years to fail.

"Please reduce the quality and increase the failure rate of my devices so I can pay a few dollars less," said NO ONE EVER!
But that’s exactly what the market does, in fact. You think Wal-Mart is in business for selling the highest quality products?

Only the first sentence was sarcastic. I agree with you.

That’s the shareholders’ mantra

Sounds like you don’t know how capitalism works

A lot of people say this. What do you think people are doing when they say they want cheaper oil for their car? How about when they go to Walmart for jeans that are made cheaply so they can save money? Not everyone can afford or wants to pay for the absolute highest quality product.

That’s why Samsung sell so many phones…. (jokes people, jokes)
