Generally it's the power management chips. Apple uses the APL1098 in iPads, Macs, and iPhones (I believe it's a rebranded TI chip) and this one has been in short supply.
They've been using up old parts in new products for years - why do you think the ipads have had buttons for so long. The IOS developed way past the need, but Apple just love to use up whatever overruns from the factories rather than bin it and offer something new the users each year (as per pre Cook era).
There will likely come a day when shortages are months longer than just going into December. Might even force the iphone to eventually be a bi-yearly release.
The chip shortage is not getting fixed anytime soon. It could last into 2023 according to many insiders & analysts. It's impacting everything from cars to graphics cards & everything in-between.
In that case it's even more of a shame they haven't carried USB-C over of the iPhone. I'm tired of having to switch between lighting for my iPhone and USB-C for my iPad Pro and.....everything else. And while I expect that Apple would rather go port-less than adopt USB-C for the iPhone, the fact that the latest iPhones still have lightning certainly removes my impetus to upgrade from my Xs Max.
Let it have a good -free- video encoder like Mac IE: Handbrake. Literally the same hardware/cooling availability on a iPad Pro/MacBook Air but can’t run the same software as the computer.
ALL video encoders on the App Store either want you to buy a monthly subscription to upload a file and then encode on a third party computer, or simply don’t work.

And that’s IF China decides not to invade Taiwan. If the worlds major supplying country goes to war to defend themselves they’re not gonna care about manufacturing your new phone.
Chips could be real short supply if the world goes south.
