A feature no one is asking for. I don’t understand why apple is doing redundant choices like putting heart rate monitoring on the AirPods Pro when the Apple Watch already does that quite well. Am I missing something here?
Going out on a limb here, but I don’t think everybody wants an Apple Watch but those same people use AirPods a lot.

As a longer-term goal, Gurman reiterated that Apple plans to add small cameras to future AirPods to enable unspecified AI-powered features. This project is now a "priority" for Apple, but likely still a few years away from completion, he said.
Oh, come on. Are they really going to ruin the so-called "pro" model and leave me with a choice between the inferior models and this garbage? Just keep them really good wireless earbuds. Is that really so difficult?

None of the three "ear size adapters" in the V2 Pro ear pods box (or prior generations as well) keeps them in my ears unless I am sitting stationary.

So they are not a device for walking outside or even moving much around the house. They even fall out when driving a car. They are not a great success for me if they won't stay in my ears.

The APP2 earbuds are truly exceptional. The sound quality, noise cancellation, and overall reliability are nothing short of stellar. However, I hope the focus remains on further enhancing these core features, particularly the sound quality and noise cancellation. Also, upgrading to next-gen microphones would be a valuable improvement.

That said, I hope Apple will resist the temptation to turn the APP into a "jack of all trades" and instead continue refining what makes it truly outstanding. Fingers crossed!

Looks like having heart rate measurement on the next AirPods Pro is a possibility. Want to see what Apple will do with cameras on AirPods. But that will take a long time to be available
I have a cousin working for engineering. He said Apple plans using cameras for safety reasons combined with AI, For example if you would listen to music outside and a vehicle is approaching the Airpods warn for potential danger.

But the true goal is to have a mapping tool expanding the capabilities of Apple Maps. Having the user to buy the hardware, do the work unexpectedly to provide image data to upgrade Apple maps anywhere. So it could up Google Maps.

They have the numbers during the last presentation and it could map in and outdoors locations within 3 years dor certain areas.

Apple Watch is accurate enough. I had a cardiac stress test done in a hospital earlier this year. Compared the output of the watch to the one the test was getting and it was always within 1 or 2 bpm off at most.

Plus if you read the article, it actually says the AirPods are not as accurate as an Apple Watch, so not sure where are you getting “way more accurate measurements” from.
These devices are all doing sampling anyway. Ever since the first Polaris heart rate monitors that would strap around your chest and communicate to a wrist-mounted head unit, they’ve all done SAMPLING. It’s not an actual count of every one of your precious little heart muscle contractions.
It’s weird how the article image is of a non-Pro AirPod. 😅
That was the first thing I noticed!
I don’t mind Apple adding features like this but I would hope it doesn’t come at the cost of battery life, especially as I already have an Apple Watch to do this. Why not use the AirPod for temperature monitoring? In-ear measurements are supposed to be quite accurate and the Watch currently can’t do temperature monitoring well at all.
Hey, it could maybe detect a stroke in progress too. After all, a stroke is when blood can’t get to the brain, right?
Who works out without an Apple watch or a Garmin watch anyway
I used to, until I learned that I can play songs on my Watch 4 to my AirPods, and I could play streaming content from my Watch 6. I think the feature missing from all AirPods is the one that warns a cigarette smoker to NOT get on the treadmill next to mine. That’s what I want. When you smoke, those toxins are just coming right out of your skin, and it is nauseous to bystanders, even if you promise to hold your breath!
That’s when you’re stationary. Any wrist-based HRM is prone to giving completely wrong readings from cadence lock when working out, which is why sometimes the bpm is greyed out during workouts and heart rate measurements are missing in some parts of a workout (invalid data). Main reason why some still rely on chest-based monitors when they work out, even when they wear smart watches.

This ear-based implementation may not be as accurate as Apple Watch when stationary but it may be able to provide valid data in more scenarios.
All of these devices do sampling only. So technically, they are “completely wrong readings” anyway. For example, if my device samples my heart-rate and says I’m at 124 BPM, but my heart only beats 122.8 beats in that minute, then it’s off by 1%. That’s a completely wrong reading, right? Yes it is.

But if I’m SUPPOSED to be at 128 BPM for this particular walk, then I still know that I have to up my pace. So even a 1% variance can STILL allow me to get enough information to be useful. Even though it’s a “completely wrong reading”. Sometimes, good enough is…well, good enough.
Are you familiar with how a cardiac stress test works? It's not stationary at all.... And again, read the article, no mention of the results being stationary or working out, it just says "Apple has found that heart rate data is "more accurate" on the Apple Watch compared to AirPods, but he said the AirPods "aren't terribly far off."" Anything else is you assuming, without anything to back it up.

If you're happy with heart rate monitors in AirPods, good, looks like you'll get a product for you. For many of us, we just want our AirPods to get good audio feature and updates and couldn't care less about having a heart rate monitor in our ear, so hopefully this just becomes a separate health edition or something like that.
I’m already tired of this argument. But get me that cigarette-smoker sniffer app; that would be interesting!
I want longer battery life. Not worse.
Shame Apple.
With all the assortment of chargers and wall sockets pretty much everywhere you’re going to be today, why do you still care so much? There are four places I can charge up between the time I get up in the morning and the time I’ve shaved, showered, had breakfast, and gotten to the car. And another two places in the car! Are you mountain climbing every day from Breakfast to Breakfast the next day?

Mine neither. I went back to the Airpods “regular”. I don’t know why or how, but that hard plastic earbud never pops out. The silicone tips always popped out, and a couple times, straight into a nearby garbage can! Plus, that silicone really irritates my skin. I even have to limit ow much I’m wearing my Apple Watches, unless I have a leather band on that day.
Actually a feature I would like
I didn’t ask for it either, and I would like it too!

I thought sound quality improvement would be the priority for headphones. Oh well, can’t wait for new home theatre receivers to be able to estimate cholesterol levels!

Excuse me? Did I understand your suggestion that AirPods could get *cameras* for detecting vehicle hazards and/or improving Apple Maps?

These are just my opinions, but I'm not sure that could be done without degrading the core functionality of the product:
  • Materials & manufacturing costs for camera and/or AI hardware
  • Power requirements (especially given AirPods known issues with battery degradation) of operating additional hardware
  • Hardware costs for on-device video storage (or, RF bandwidth & power for sending data to Maps)
  • Privacy(!!) of wearing a device for potentially hours a day that sends photos/video of your surroundings
I can see an argument for taking steps to improve the situational awareness of headphone users. I don't feel that AirPod users would accept measurable cost or power penalties for ... improving Apple Maps.

But do they come in black?
Product branding. The world would be upside down if they did black. Just like EarPods. Even tho yes I’d love that option for both devices, for st least those devices, black isn’t Apple…it’s almost as if they’re sacred ground like say Apple 1 or whateva those early devices were that were strictly white/beige or whateva…

Yea cuz thikkk abt it…iPod was rocking first and had the white buds and those white buds then (magically) stahted gettin plugged in2 iPhones (a product, upon being revealed, to be paht iPod). Ugh Apple too dope. Why anyone would even consider android that phony bologna mess : (

All I would like is better ANC and sound quality you know the reason you buy headsets or in ears. If they add extra fluff that’s great as long as sound and anc is at the top of the list first. If they sound the same and no anc improve the I don’t care what they add. It’s like phones the camera comes first what about the phone itself.

Yes, way more people buys AirPods Pro than Watches.

Hope there is a version without it. Why would I want heart rate measurements in my earbuds? I already have an Apple Watch. How about lossless audio? These are earbuds, please make audio related improvements.
These are earbuds with tiny drivers. I seriously doubt anyone clamoring for lossless in these would be able to hear the difference.

That would be great if Apple does add heart rate capabilities to the new AirPods Pro 3

I’m hoping that Apple does come out with the new AirPods Pro this September as I’d like to be able to get the new ones (for the improved noise cancellation) for when I take them with me traveling next year

Out of curiosity, if you are so keen on having HR monitoring, why are you not using an Apple Watch?
And, if you already are, what do you hope to gain by having this functionality added to the APP3, other than a higher price?

Way more accurate measurements. Apple Watch is prone to cadence lock, for example

There are a lot of assumptions in your post.
Apple itself have found that the watch is more accurate. No mention of "cadence lock" (to use your terminology) at all, which as far as we know might be (or might not be) even worse on the APP3 than it currently is on the Watch.
Considering how easily they can get out of position (or even fall) while exercising, I'd be inclined to think they would not work great while running. But this is to be seen.

This functionality will be useful mainly to people that want HR monitoring without using a watch (as mentioned by the article).
I find this puzzling to some degree, as anyone with a small interest in HR monitoring will very likely have already purchased a watch.

Considering the gimmicky value of this functionality on AirPods, I wouldn't be surprised if it could be implemented with a simple software change and therefore, for Apple, it is a case of "why not". Let's do it because we can, and it costs us nothing or very little.

Going out on a limb here, but I don’t think everybody wants an Apple Watch but those same people use AirPods a lot.

Let's go out on a limb together then. I don't think anybody interested in HR monitoring has been holding back from buying a watch in the hope that the functionality might be added to the AirPods.

Anyone that wants HR monitoring for Health purposes, will opt for the device they will wear day and night, warn them of possible health issues and allow them to take an ECG trace.

Anyone that that wants HR monitoring for Fitness purposes, will opt for the best device for the job, The one that will not fall out while they run. The one that they can wear while swimming. The one that will detect their cadence and other movements. The one that will keep track of distance via GPS. The one that will allow them easy monitoring while exercising. The one that they can wear continuously all day before recharging, etc...
