Explains the upcoming 17 slim we’ve been seeing rumors about - that’ll be the initial pure candy bar version of the form factor that folds in the 18 or 19

Don't bother, utter gimmick and only useful for a tablet.
Which is weird you say that because Samsung has sold millions upon millions of these folding devices.

You say gimmick.
I say people’s preference.
Apple knows better than you ever would even begin to fathom or imagine what would sell and make them money.
They have literal teams of analysts crunching numbers and doing market research.

If there was no money to be made then they wouldn’t spend a dime on the research.

People are tired of the same old Apple formula.
The iPhone has stagnated.
Change is just the market talking.

Yep, saw one the other day. Really thick and horrible. However, there is a use case for carrying a small tablet in iPhone Max size when folded. With reports that the 17 will be super-slim, a fold version of this that opens into a small tablet could well make sense. Maybe this will be for the iPhone XX?

I don’t get the point of these type of phones. With a Galaxy Fold type of phone, you would get an iPad (mini) that you can put in your pocket, meaning you can bring it places you would not bring a normal iPad. In other words, it’s useful. But what‘s the purpose of a flip phone? Is there anywhere you cannot bring a normal-sized phone? It seems totally useless.

Problem: Having to use and charge two devices separately (phone and mini tablet), and also having to carry the two devices around.
Solution: Build a phone and mini tablet into one compact device.
Simple really.

Problem: Unfold phone and have to look at a gross crease.
Solution: Don't make folding phones.

OR

Problem: Phone is too thick to put into my pocket.
Solution: Don't make folding phones.

OR

Problem: Addition of moving parts causes phones to need to be repaired.
Solution: Don't make folding phones.

Problem: We have an entire line of two different devices, iPads and iPhones. Should we merge them into one and cannibalize sales?
Solution: Don't make folding phones.

I swear I saw a foldable iPhone in the wild last Summer in NY at a concert. Full iOS icons/camera/look but foldable. Was in front of me recording the band- blocking my view so I got a good look ha.
What you saw was a test prototype and Steve Jobs is now spinning in his grave...ready to go on a tirade cursing out that Apple employee for not covering the device up better.

How did that work out with the car, the largest R&D project in Apple's history.

Z Fold form factor is way more useful than Z Flip. The latter is not particularly useful when closed and functions essentially as a taller and slightly compromised candy bar form factor when opened.

Reality: The OnePlus Open doesn't have a crease. I know, I own one.

Problem: Phone is too thick to put into my pocket.
Reality: The OnePlus Open isn't a whole lot thicker than an iPhone 14PM when folded (3.85mm). I've owned six foldables now and I've never had an issue putting them in any of my pockets. Also, the OnePlus Open in Voyager black weighs less than an iPhone 14PM.

Problem: Addition of moving parts causes phones to need to be repaired.
Reality: Make more revenue on repairs

Problem: We have an entire line of two different devices, iPads and iPhones. Should we merge them into one and cannibalize sales?
Reality: You can still sell a foldable and iPads and iPhones, as foldables will never be for everyone.

A z flip. Not even sure why I haven’t gotten rid of it. I literally threw my s22 away a few days ago.

I could have sold it but eh. Idk why I still keep the z flip.
Oh yeah, I don't blame you there. I had a Z Flip as well and I hated it. The Folds are much better.

It's weird to me that folks are against an Apple foldable without even knowing what the offering might look like.

It's oddly a lot of the same folks who DO like the Vision Pro, which is ... Apple's somewhat unique take on an existing hardware/offering space (just like foldable phones)

See the irony?
I don’t think that comparison is great. I tried the Vision Pro demo and thought it was really cool. I have seen other people at the store and they also appeared to be in awe of it as well.

I don’t own one because I can’t see the killer app that makes it worth the price tag. But I understand the desire to go further with that technology. It really is quite amazing when done right.

And I think a lot of people agree, considering the millions who own a Quest because there are games and features on it that are really pretty amazing.

If the price tag was significantly cheaper, I don’t think the Vision Pro would be having any issues selling like hot cakes. $3500 or whatever however…

That's a lot of words to say "I don't like them."
You made a comment, I disputed it.
I know you guys hate anytime we aren’t salivating over android or android features/form factors.

It has nothing to do with me not Liking them. They look cool. If I was wanting to settle for an inferior os and ecosystem like android, I’m sure I’d be a foldable lover singing their praises.

Alas I don’t want an inferior ecosystem and as I said before almost no one is asking for a foldable iPhone.

There is more want for a mini than a foldable iPhone.

Oh well 🤷🏾‍♀️
