I think your arm would get sore almost immediately. That’s why I think having the iPad Pro with an iMac-like stand makes more sense. The stand can house IO and power supply. Detach the screen (iPad) whenever you want to draw on it.
Not saying it shouldn't also be detachable, but using a design similar to the G4-Lampshade-iMac or Surface-Studio would really suit drawing on a touchscreen iMac.

Said on MORE than one occasion I'd put up with all the OTHER deliberate sabotage by Apple of operating in an otherwise Windows environment if they could sell me a touchscreen MacBook Air 2-in-1.

I know a couple other people who would buy one, also.

Can't help but be amused that so many Apple users are so conservative and risk-scared.

THEY don't have to buy it, yet like people consumed by ideology they cannot imagine letting anyone else buy one because of the words of a dead person.

"Tradition: Social Control by Dead People"

Just goes to show how so many get Apple wrong. Apple is the epitome of Business-Only DRUDGERY and $$$$ GRIND, not having fun and exploring, mostly because they pay too much for the Apple mystique to be able to have fun or explore. Only, Apple hides the DRUDGERY inside 'aerodynamic styling' and the fairly solid, No OOPS! care-and-feeding that people consumed by DRUDGERY need to have if they are to keep on with the DRUDGERY and $$$$ GRIND.

The point is that the macOS user interface is not designed for touchscreens. There would inevitably be more UI changes.
Yeah, Change is Bad.

Super hard and even harder for app devs.

The operating systems and their respective apps both have different memory requirements too.
I could see something like dual-boot for the 8GB M# iPads and hot-swapping for the 16GB M# iPads.

I look forward to the 4GB A12X iPad Pro owners complaining that they can't hot-swap both OSes when they are just as good as the M1 iPads. :D

At this point, Apple doesn’t give a damn about the iPads obviously. Just make the Macbook Pro a modular all-in-one like those concept notebooks you see every CES from companies like Lenovo. Give the MacBook Pro an OLED touchscreen and give the display its own processor as well so it can be detached from the rest of the screen to be used like a tablet for drawing on Procreate with the Apple Pencil and attach it to the keyboard when you’re going to need to use “laptop mode.” But considering Apple now, they’ll never do something like this cause they never take innovative risks anymore (other than the long-rumoured mixed reality headset, and no one is going to be thrilled about the idea of spending $4000+ CAD on a fancy headset just to play Beatsaber or Angry Birds or do a virtual FaceTime meeting)

:)

I don’t think it will happen anyway. macOS would eat that iPad battery up in half the time or a third.

I post on this forum and reddit from iPad Pro and with the Magic keyboard attached I don’t touch the screen at all. The only time I do is if I detach is to use it for reading/surfing on bed or couch. Without the keyboard I don’t even type on it. Just hate software keyboards.

This would be great, if you don't need it just don't use it. I use this all the time on my laptop, much easier on the wrist and hand. Personally I doubt it will happen because it would make MacOS usable on a touch paradigm, making the question of why don't they make a MacOS iPad all that more relevant. Apple wouldn't take a chance on convincing consumers they need 2 devices.

Change can be good but I imagine adding touch is going to increase the price? Hope there will still be a non-touch version if that's the case as I'm quite happy to not touch my MBP screen and not pay for a feature like this.

just admit it apple we all want the m1 and m2 ipad pros to have macos support imagine a double OS system ; would be a dream come true

I agree. iPads have always had terrible battery life. I was thinking the other day about what would happen if the iPad did get macOS like everyone wants. macOS is a much richer operating system than iPadOS, so if Apple gave macOS to the iPad, it would nuke the iPad’s battery life to the point of being unusable whenever it’s unplugged. That would defeat the whole point of the iPad’s portability. If Apple is worrying about the iPad cannibalizing Mac sales, the abysmal battery life and the high price tag of the iPad (an iPad Pro setup with the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil would be more expensive than a low-end MacBook with the same chip, RAM and SSD configuration) would prevent the iPads from cannibalizing Mac sales. In fact, the opposite would be more likely to happen, especially if Gurman’s report is true and Apple does add touchscreen capability to newer Macs. Either way, Pros would definitely want a Mac if they want Mac capabilities. It’s a lose-lose situation. Keep limiting the iPadOS (which I don’t agree with) and keep the already terrible battery life, making the Mac a better value, or make the iPad software more capable with the consequence of the battery life being bad enough to make the iPad unusable, which would have the same result in making the Mac a better deal

The only users that are naturally inclined to touch laptop and monitor screens are babies and very young children who don’t type and love getting their chocolate covered fingers all over everything 😂

In addition to that, you can only make such a thin light device so powerful. If you want an iPad with desktop-class capabilities, it wouldn’t be possible because, physics. The massive GPU cores would dangerously overheat the iPad and burn up its vitals, especially in a 6.4mm (or 5.9mm for the 11-inch) fabless design. And you wouldn’t have much (if any) battery at all. Either it would die instantly the moment it’s unplugged after a full charge, or the processor would destroy the battery

I wish Apple would reconsider the TouchBar. It should be in addition to the function keys, on a key-height panel mounted closer the to hinge, AND, somehow, rotate upwards so that it is always at the same angle as the display.
A gimmick? Yes, a little bit, but, much easier to visually locate with less guesswork, and, "thumb-able".

So an iPad (whether or not it gets macOS) will never replace a Mac. Macs with similar specs to the iPad will easily win with their superior software, battery life and cheaper price, and more powerful Macs have powerful processors that are not appropriate for the iPad’s design

Even if Apple does add macOS to the iPad, there will still be a market for people who want a Mac. The iPad will be there for people who want a more expensive but portable ”MacBook” that you can draw on with the Apple Pencil in Procreate, as long as they don’t mind carrying a massive battery bank (or multiple battery banks) with them everywhere as well

Not me. I don't want to need a keyboard and trackpad just to use MacOS. I want a touch optimized version of MacOS where things like the hit target padding changes depending on whether a mouse/trackpad is attached. I want MacOS to accommodate an on-screen keyboard. I want to be able to hot-swap between the two OSes without having to shut-down or boot.
Plug in an iPad and sidecar does most of that already (in a primitive form). No need for two OS's when a single responsive one would do the trick.

The apps that would need to be optimized to switch between touch / no touch. That could take alot of time though - some already have touchscreen controls e.g. Logic, but I'd hardly call it optimized.

Pretty great except its the wrong OS 🤣
Luckily even the rumor has 2025 as the earliest Apple will come out with a touch screen mac. If Apple finds a few more competent engineers to work on the OS, they'll be able to catch up to Windows 8 by then.

Unfortunately Windows 11 hasn’t caught up with Windows 8’s touch integration.

Apple must have discovered touchscreens aren't so bad with the ipad / keyboard folio combo? I don't know since I don't have a keyboard folio for my ipad. 🤷‍♂️

Makes more sense to use an iPad as a touch screen for your mac, keep the screen clean and ya it's all there. For whatever Mac you have

I understand what apple has said in the past about touchscreens and arm fatigue. What I (think) I would like to see is a pencil type device with a couple of buttons on the side that could replace a mouse or trackpad so I could point, click, drag, and draw on my desk or table to control my mac, sorta like a wacom stylus without the tablet. Would be great for apps like FreeForm on my mac. Maybe? 🤷‍♂️

I tried using SideCar and my pencil to control my mac, but SideCar isn't designed to allow the pencil to be used as an input device on a mac, unfortunately.
