Pretty crazy to think just 10 years ago, the iPhone and iPad categories wouldn't have existed (69%), and iPod revenues would probably be 35x as much.
Not quite.

For all of 2003, Apple sold 939,000 iPods for $345 million in total revenue, versus 22.9 million iPods in 9 months of fiscal 2013 for $3.8 billion in revenue.

Lets see how much the stock will swing the other way after Cook speaks.

IMO, weak iPad sales highlight the importance of retina iPad mini. iPad 5 may help slow the decline, but the real future lies in iPad mini.

Wonder what amazing products 2014

I wonder if I should delay my purchases until next year since it looks like we will continue with the existing line up going into 2014.

Or maybe when they refer to 2014 its actually products like the new Mac Pro, 4k Thunderbolt display, Retina iPad Mini and 4.5 inch iPhone 6?

Really surprised by the weakness with iPad...

Then again I still see a lot of happy iPad-1 users, so they just need to update it more with feature that really make people come back and upgrade.

With the iPhone they are doing more progress in my opinion.

Why is it weak? There hasn't been a refresh this year. I think the numbers are ok considering that.

As an Apple fan, this is nothing to worry about. Apple was the most committed to its best, highest quality software in days when it was a very poor company, barely making profits. What annoys me with Apple is that software quality in Mac OS X has taken a nosedive over the last few years. This can be fixed or not fixed whether their profit margins are sky-high or not!

Their business outside the US isn't pretty.

Really surprised by the weakness with iPad...

iPad y/y numbers for this quarter are apples to oranges - they released iPad 3 right at the beginning of the same quarter last year, and had 6 month old iPad 4s and Mini's to start the quarter with this year.

To me, the most significant part of that chart is that iTunes accounts for 11% of their earnings. That's a continuing source of revenue that is much less dependent on technology or innovation. It also increases the "stickiness" of Apple products.

I have an iPad 3 and will buy the new iPad 5 when it comes, I know a slew of iPad 1 & 2 owners waiting for the new version. Most people know a new version is coming.

Their business outside the US isn't pretty.

Just wait until the cheaper iphone is released. International sales are going to SOAR. The only questions are: what kind of margins will they have on this cheaper iphone and how much it will cannibalize US sales.

Yeah, up 19 after hours. My guess is they just looked at the upside surprise on the iPhone numbers and ignored everything else.

Just shows that predicting stock price is real gamble! Makes some sense as iPhone generates more than half the income!

Last quarter the stock jumped after hours until Cook said no new products until the fall/2014, then it tanked.

He already said it. From the earning press release

“We are especially proud of our record June quarter iPhone sales of over 31 million and the strong growth in revenue from iTunes, Software and Services,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We are really excited about the upcoming releases of iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks, and we are laser-focused and working hard on some amazing new products that we will introduce in the fall and across 2014.”

I really hope Apple goes back to a more scattered release schedule of products. Having nothing for 6-8 months and then everything all at once is not the greatest strategy to do each year.

Maybe next year it will be more spread out. It was nice having iPad updates early in the year, iPhone mid year, iPod/iTunes in the fall, and Macs throughout.

And those Mac numbers are depressing, but expected given its lack of focus.

I think the amount of stuff that Apple is trying to pull off is significant and the
timing of some unfortunate things is preventing shipping stuff in the time
they'd like. The things they're reportedly trying to do:

* Develop a Retina Mini.

* Wait for Haswell (which just became available) in order to update
across their computer line.

* Develop Mavericks.

* A total re-design of the Mac Pro.

* Coming up with a new, low-cost phone.

* And oh yeah, what else? Develop a new phone and re-write the
OS for that phone.

And of course the associated rumored problems:

* Manufacturers having a tough time with the Retina display.

* The iPhone 5S finger print sensor reportedly having issues.

* Being behind on iOS7 and stealing developers that would've been working
on Mavericks.

Let's have a little patience and give them time to do it right...
