There’s so much hype around Apple and AI right now. The expectations at WWDC are going to be off the charts. Honestly I think it’s a mistake for them to create such expectations because the likelihood of them meeting or surpassing those expectations is low. Then all the stories will be how Apple’s WWDC underwhelmed or [insert company here] is already doing what Apple announced.

I am invested in Apple products and services, so I am rooting for Apple as a self-serving customer. However, I won't believe anything Apple claims about AI until it happens. I will believe OpenAI, Google, Meta, Microsoft, even McDonald's about AI before I believe Apple.

“Apple may be quiet on AI, but it’s also the biggest buyer of AI companies.”

The power of silence in a noisy world.

I've used ChatGPT for a while now (and some of the others) and it is PAINFUL that we cant' talk to Siri like that. To be able to ask questions and (!) get answers. Or even have Siri do basic tasks w/out causing more work (making notes and calendar events is never smooth). Apple seems to have been out of the loop on this whole AI thing, which is a shock and a shame. I hope they're just being secretive and will debut a really clever and useful version for us soon. But they've been behind the curve w/ Siri the entire time now, even with pre-AI assistants: vs Alexa, Google, Catana, etc.

I also wonder how much wasted brainpower and man hours went into that stupid car R&D? 🥴

I can't wait to see this kind of technology added to Siri. Because quite often, when I ask Siri to close the garage door, it regularly replies: I can't find any volume to adjust.

For me Siri controlling HomeKit devices is the only place she excels. Everything else needs work for sure.

We are trading privacy for efficiency. Google listens and analyzes the data on their servers whereas Apple has worked to keep that localized. Impressive what they have done but I do envy some of the things that Google can do (but apple is faster at controlling my light bulbs)

Won't lie...
I'd love to see an integrated solution (like Copilot is for Windows), but the apple way.

Just more published research. Means nothing except to journalists, and bored posters.

When Apple announces what it is doing with AL and realm. Most in the AI space will wonder why they went that route and not adapt what others who lead the AI space are doing. Look at what Microsoft and Google are doing developing better LLMs. C'mon Apple it is time to partner with someone else who leads in the AI space. Not go your own way or different direction.

They've been talking about AI/Siri and "context" for years and have never really delivered. Each Siri iteration promises the ability to string comments together, and none seem to deliver. Will this advance be any different?

You don’t see any benefits to the field overall in models that outcompete others while also running locally on device?

IF (and it’s a big if) some of these claims are true, it means Apple has leapfrogged the industry AND done it in an efficient way the industry is going to take quite a while to catch up with.

IF that hold true, why would we be asking Apple to partner with the companies they just surpassed?

All this AI stuff is *monstrously* resource intensive. IF Apple has managed to get close enough performance *on a battery powered device*, I’m going with them 🤷‍♂️

All I want is a better Siri. And I don't know about you, but I don't use Siri a whole lot while looking at my iPhone screen or laptop/desktop monitor - I use Siri when screens and keyboards aren't convenient to use - e.g. when walking or driving. So this research won't be of much help there.

I assume anything their current research is talking about won't impact their offerings for several years and in the meantime they'll do what they did with outsourcing Maps until they got their solution "ready" (of course then there was the bumps until it was a competitive offering, which will likely be more so with AI)
Yep.

Considering Siri's ineptitude alone, it's not hard to see why so many think Apple is exploiting its position as a monopoly.

In a truly competitive market no consumer would opt for the smartphone that offers a voice assistant that's outdated by 10+ years and barely functional.

But who's going to switch out their iPhone with an Android device when they also lose all or most of their Watch, AirPods, HomePod, Mac features/functionality/integration and all the apps and accessories that's locked and blocked from being used with non-Apple devices?

Apple deserves all the scrutiny that's been coming its way lately and so much more.

It sounds to me like this new reALM bot has the potential to enable data miners and hackers to gain even greater access to your financial/personal information. See a term you don't understand on your brokerage account? reALM can look at the screen (with your account numbers) and "help" you with that…

Big claim from the same company that introduced Siri
More like big claim from the same company that's in talks with Alphabet, OpenAI, and Baidu to use one of their AI models

If ReALM is better than GPT-4,

Apple researchers have developed an artificial intelligence system named ReALM (Reference Resolution as Language Modeling) that aims to radically enhance how voice assistants understand and respond to commands.

Apple researchers found that this strategy, combined with specific fine-tuning of language models for reference resolution tasks, significantly outperforms traditional methods, including the capabilities of OpenAI's GPT-4.

then why is Apple in discussions with OpenAI to use GPT-4?

Honestly GPT is hype. Every company is copying it now and it’s not too special now
The copycats are the ones that are overhyped. What's the point of investing in these dime-a-dozen companies if they're not pulling ahead? Google's out here dropping Gemini while OpenAI is dropping hints of SORA, which seem miles ahead of them.

Reminds me of the Qualcomm hype for new CPUs comparing them to older Apple silicon.
